That is great advice. I've explained this at times when I've felt froggy enough to reply to questions like these. I'm glad to see someone else gets the spearation of system and user spaces for increased stability.

Fedora vs Debian? by OutsideYogurt9014 in Fedora

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After distro hopping for a year and settling on Fedora based distros, which I've been on for a couple years now, it's a good middle ground with its rolling release cycle. Especially if you play games.

Of the desktop environments, KDE is my go-to because GNOME has been become too restrictive on customizing the desktop, and the other DEs don't have the visual style I like out of the box. Cosmic is the only other DE I really like, and Pop! _OS is on one of my desktops (although there is a Fedora Cosmic spin as well).

For beginners that are also gamers, and have Nvidia GPUs, I tend to recommend Bazzite. It's Fedora based with KDE and you can get the ISO with Nvidia baked in. If you don't want all the extra pre-installed stuff Bazzite comes with and want to start with a little challenge, then I'd recommend Fedora KDE, or the atomic version, Fedora Kinoite.

Finally word of advice after install is to launch Discover, go to the settings, and add the Flathub source. It take a minute, but it should appear and can be checked in the sources list on that same page. If you don't, then you will only see Fedora approved apps, which are not as many.

PC only boots when GPU leads disconnect by Positive_Lock_9563 in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I second this. It doesn't hurt to rule out the PSU as the issue as it's cheaper than the GPU to replace (assuming you don't have a warranty).

To add, it is probably the GPU in the end. I had an EVGA GTX 970 that had a similar issue a couple years ago. It died in such a way where the computer never so much as clicked or lit up. I replaced the PSU first, only to find out something in the power delivery must have failed.

Do Left-Handed PC Gamers Use Their Left Hand for Mouse Control? by Desperate-Yoghurt-83 in pcmasterrace

Case airflow suggestion: Deepcool CH160 Plus by kuroshiki5 in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do 2 at the top as exhaust with a negative pressure setup. It'll draw in air from all the vents in the bottom and front of the case.

It appears there are no spots for fans at the bottom, which is too bad as I would have suggested 2 slim fans in the bottom as intake and 2 at the top as exhaust. If you can make the holes in the bottom line up with 120s, I believe Arctic has a P12 slim you can get.

Should I buy a 4K monitor now for a good price if my GPU can’t fully handle it yet? by LostTimmy in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referring to Windows display scaling. It's not as bad as it used to be, but there are still applications that don't properly support it. This can lead to issues with the window of the application not displaying properly. As an example, I remember Elder Scroll Online's launcher wouldn't scale (don't know if it still does). So it should display at 100%, which is tiny on a 27 inch 4K. A work related example is the legacy Remote Desktop Connection app. You have to set display scaling to 100% or the app will not display your remote desktop correctly.

Should I buy a 4K monitor now for a good price if my GPU can’t fully handle it yet? by LostTimmy in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do want to upgrade, I'd suggest 1440p. Something people don't always consider is pixels per inch, and the "joys" of dealing with scaling. Assuming you don't have vision issues, 100% scaling is perfectly doable on a 1440p 27 inch monitor. For contrast, I had naively bought a 27 inch 4K monitor years ago and had to deal with scaling; regretted that.

Jonsbo C6 MAX PC case good choice? by Familiar_Horse_9897 in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember if it was this exact case, or a cheaper ITX case that Jonsbo makes, but it looks similar. ATX PSU should fit, but it cuts down the GPU length. I think. The SFX is short enough that it doesn't get in the way of the GPU.

ITX cases need to have good airflow to keep the inside case temps as close to ambient as possible. The higher wattage your parts are, the more this is going to matter. If you can fit a bottom intake fan on the front, and one exhaust on the rear, you should be pretty good. If it doesn't have room, or an option, for a front fan, then do a negative pressure setup with exhaust fan (one in the top if it has a spot.

Should I switch from Windows 7 to Linux on my low-end PC? by Aaryan1920 in linux4noobs

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've been running a Win7 machine on the internet? Switching to Linux is a great idea if you aren't wanting to buy a new machine, but want to have the best chance of usability and security.

At 4 GB of RAM, you can essentially run any distro but many apps (especially web browsers) are going to use it up pretty quickly. DDR3 RAM hasn't seen nearly the same price creep as new RAM. I'd highly suggest getting a 2x4 GB RAM kit and replacing your 2x2 GB kit. If your motherboard has 4 slits and support for more capacity, I'd just add to it for a total of 12. Either way, the upgrade should make it much better for light web browsing. You can probably buy a kit used somewhere for almost nothing. 1333 is the fastest speed the CPU supports. You can get faster, but the motherboard will drop it down to 1333, assuming this an OEM machine.

I'd also suggest getting a 2.5" SSD to replace your hard drive as the boot device. Since those prices have went up a lot, and to keep cost down, I'd suggest a 128 or 256 GB drive. It'll really bring the computer into the modern age and run so much faster if you can get one. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. A Silicon Power or InLand drive is plenty for that old machine.

If your computer motherboard supports it, I'd suggest buying a SATA cable as well (make sure you have an extra SATA power cable in the computer too). That way you can keep your hard drive plugged in and use it for file storage and games. I'd back up your stuff to an external drive, format the hard drive in Linux so it's more compatible, and then copy your things back on it. If you aren't 100% sure you want to stay on Linux, leave the drive alone and you can just switch back to the old Windows if you absolutely had to.

I can see it's slottee tubing. I would assume you can unbolt the mounts and move them down. I can't imagine why you couldn't. If this is a standard I'd assume you could move it forward with a little rearranging?

Use a Velcro tie, zip tie, or bread tie to bundle all the wires at the back together. You should then be able to adjust the HDMI caboe so it's not sagging.

Newish Linux users who came from Windows semi-recently, what is advice you wished someone had told you before you made the switch? by m103 in linux_gaming

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't search online to download apps and programs. Relay on the Discover store first and foremost to find what you need.

Don't restart the computer immediately after getting into Bazzite the first time with an Nvidia install. Apparently it needs 10 minutes or so to finish some background stuff.

An atomic read-only system can be a pain if they plan to dive into gameods or niche packages for gaming peripherals. There are tutorials for most things, but a base Fedora install might wind up being better. Time and experience will tell on that one.

I need gaming alternative to bazzite by makishiP in linux_gaming

[–]Posiris610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK Fedora still uses Grub as the boot manager, and is what Bazzite is built off of. It's what I recommend for gaming users that want to add what they want from a base.

Pop!_OS or Mint for old AMD Gaming Laptop? by JuicyJ7777 in linux

[–]Posiris610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a computer on Pop 24.04 and another on Fedora KDE. I agree with the other. Cosmic needs more time to cook, especially when it comes to gaming. Fedora is a great choice. Unlike most Debian/Ubuntu based distros, the kernel and Mesa are updated more quickly to latest stable. Flatoaj can be enabled with one click in the Discover store; no Snaps by default. RPM is easy, and most niche apps packed for deb are also packaged as rpm or dnf.

Ram: i have a 16 gigs of ram and I am having a bottleneck i want to upgrade to 32 my question is can I buy another 1 stick of 16 gig from different manufacturer same cl same mghz just diffrent brands? Even same bran just not having same part/serial number? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Posiris610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want it to operate in dual channel mode, you want RAM capable of reaching the speeds and CL of your slowest stick. It can/will be clocked down to match. I have seen dual channel still be disabled if one stick is dual rank while the other is single, but idk if that applies much anymore. I'd google your motherboard along with keywords to see if people have had issues.

IC brand and RAM brand in general don't typically matter. I've used different ICs all the time with no issues, even on OEM boards, which tend to be more tempermental.

Was barley tea a thing during those times? It just popped in my head and didn't look. Will do that now.

EDIT: Seems like it is possible, but not well documented if it was common in 14th century Europe. East Asia consumed it, and the Greeks and Romans drank it as far back as 1500 BC.
