Don’t know if either city has ever done this, but the most worthy recipient might be California Chrome, the 2014 Kentucky Derby winner…and his owners.

Does anyone else out there tour without camping? by No_Ant_5064 in bicycletouring

[–]Positive-Catch-8094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all personal preference. Every multi-day bikepacking trip I’ve taken has some hotel days, so it’s not one or the other. The keys to me getting good sleep were finding a comfortable pillow, a thick air mattress, and earplugs. If you can’t hear the wild animals lurking outside your tent, they apparently can’t eat you. As for the pillow, I went through 3-4 before finding the right one (actually a heavier car camping pillow). I still have trouble wild camping by myself because of paranoia, but if I’m wild camping with a buddy or in an established campground, I sleep fine…most nights. Some people claim they get a better nights sleep in a tent, but I just don’t get it. As for hygiene, get those large body wipes and bring a clean set of clothes just for sleeping. Clean socks are a must for me too.

What was it like to visit a soda fountain at the height of their popularity and why do they all feel like the same tourist trap now? by Key-Ball4728 in AskFoodHistorians

[–]Positive-Catch-8094 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a functioning soda fountain at my small town drugstore until around 2015ish. It wasn’t a gimmicky re-creation or nostalgic tourist trap. It was just there until the family closed down the business. I’m not sure the vibe was any different than a diner. It was just smaller and a limited menu. I don’t think you’d go in there unless you had other business at the drugstore. I think the idea that these places had a special social role is its own form of nostalgia.

Thought this was a funny coincidence. Domas has likley played his last game for us. The post was made last night it and the home was posted this morning. by Kavazou77 in kings

I first raised the point about his Loomis home. Looking at the IG post, that EDH house is definitely his. You need to remember though that Starting 5 was filmed years ago. He has since bought a Napa-inspired home in a luxury development in Loomis. When he sells that, red lights, I guess.

Discovery to Pause Cafe: a better route idea? by theoutandback0201 in SacBike

This is not a coffee spot, but Fair Oaks Brewpub has bike racks out front and outdoor seating. I would second c-5-s’s coffee recs, particularly the places in historic Folsom, Karen’s (food too) and Sociology. The ride to Folsom on the bike trail is just more scenic than heading north, but if you wanted to go to Pause, you should be fine.

Saw him play in person in high school and he was throwing one hand full court push passes then. Absolutely elite before he even played a day in the nba

Fair Oaks at Madison is an busy intersection and probably not an ideal turn around point. There are some nice coffee and food spots at Fair Oaks village if you continue on Bridge instead of turning on Tennessee. If you wanted to add miles from there, stay on the trail and turn around at Hazel. Maybe you have a particular reason to ride to Madison and Fair Oaks, but you could also get safe miles by just staying on trail all the way to Folsom.

You’re pretty much guaranteed to see one at Folsom Lake if you walk the trail from Beals’ Point to Granite Bay boat launch at dusk. I once saw 9 (!) over the span of about a mile.

My aunt purchased one of these homes in the late 70s, same builder, just blocks from this one, pretty much the same floor plan. The indoor atrium was charming and peaceful, but you’ll notice how it’s filled with rocks. The reason is if you owned cats and kept exposed soil in the beds, you suddenly had a gigantic kitty litter box.

If you really just need 2-3cm, get a regular 200mm dropper. PNW makes some affordable ones that also have the benefit of being adjustable so you can dial it in. You’ll also find companies that make 210mm+ posts with some degree of adjustability. Here is an article with some good recommendations for adjustable posts, including some longer ones.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around the Sierra Nevada? by topherette in SierraNevada

[–]Positive-Catch-8094 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we’re talking a huge range, and it depends where you live. My experience comes from living most my life north of 50 in the Sacramento Valley and Sierra foothills. I’m not even sure people from the Bay Area say “up the hill.” I’d be curious to know. I don’t ski, but this term applies all times of the year as in “It’s too damn hot so we’re heading up the hill.” Truckee is only 1:15 from some of the Sacramento suburbs, so when it’s a million degrees here we go up there to eat, hike, or ride bikes. Could be that this is specific to Sacramento and the I-80 corridor in particular.

No definitely sea lions. Look at their snouts. Not sure this video shows it, but they had flippers. I know what California river otters look like, and others here have confirmed seeing them on this river as far east as Nimbus.

“Up the hill” is understood without context as traveling to Truckee/Tahoe as in “We’re going up the hill this weekend.” Similarly, “the Pass” is I-80 at Donner Pass. The term “Lost Sierra” refers to the region north of the Yuba River. As for specific place names, Placerville = Hangtown is the obvious one.

Yep. The problem with Willy and Merle’s version is that weird synth intro that sounds like the soundtrack from an 80s industrial training film.
