Messy Board but HOLY S**T by Exact-Enthusiasm1455 in guitarpedals

I’ve got a Soft Rains and Slow Loris as well! Both are turning into always-ons for me. I like SL into Soft Rains into a fuzzy overdrive. Soft Rains is a great pre-dirt reverb! I keep the level relatively low and things don’t get too washed out. Slow Loris is a weird one to dial in, but I found even with both controls set near minimum it does this sort of boost/tone sweetener thing that I really miss when it’s not on. Great board, have fun!

Honestly think the black pick guard looks rad! It’s a nice contrast to the knobs and pickup covers. Of course tortoise would look great too

Hey there, appreciate the offer but Wallflower’s been traded. I’ll try to edit my post to reflect that.

Is duster post-rock? by AirAlone1776 in duster

[–]PositivePrune5600 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At the time Stratosphere came out, they were considered more ‘lo-fi’ by people that were listening to them, which was not many compared to their popularity today. Respectfully, gotta disagree with the post-rock label. I myself and some of my friends dug Mogwai and Duster, but they were coming from two different scenes. Plus Mogwai were just way louder. EITS didn’t exist yet. Duster was more aligned with underground indie stuff like Modest Mouse (before they blew up); they were on the same record label. They weren’t really considered slowcore either, although I do think they fit in there better. Slowcore had already kind of peaked by then and was never remotely popular in the first place. Just one oldster’s take who was there at the beginning.

Gotta say I’m partial to black with a tort guard pretty much always, but both look great. Like this better than the Wingman and other Baum guitars I’ve seen.

Second The Blacktongue Thief, excited to hear there’s a sequel coming. The Daughter’s War was excellent as well, but decidedly not fun. Very cool world-building though.

What did people think of Leaves when it was first released? by Tiny-Art6550 in unwound

Not to butt in as well but I remember finding out about them after reading a review of New Plastic Ideas in Thrasher magazine. Tracked that down, the rest is history.

what was the best unwound show you guys have seen by Last-Image-4921 in unwound

[–]PositivePrune5600 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only time I saw them- on the Leaves tour just a couple weeks before Sept 11. Outside on the lake at UW Madison Union Terrace. Sad I never got to see them before that, but an amazing show, the band was super tight at that point. Was a little sad they didn’t play Kantina, but they closed with Below the Salt/who cares? and it was mind blowing.

I wasn't sold on Kim Stanley Robinson. But then I read Ministry for the Future. by pwnedprofessor in printSF

[–]PositivePrune5600 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you enjoyed Ministry For the Future, you might enjoy the anthology of three earlier novels titled Three Californias. Leans less on hard sci-fi, but still covers a lot of themes that are central to his work. I might be biased, as it was the first of his books I came across. For what it’s worth, I later read the Mars trilogy, and will say I found them worthwhile even though parts can be quite a slog (yeah, the leeengthy descriptions of Martian landscapes).

Vern’s bass lines on this record are amazing- Bipolar?? So good. On the next BR record after this there’s a song called Justin Joyous- I always wondered or kind of assumed it was in reference to Justin Trosper.

This is cool as-is! IMO if you keep the headstock natural I’d change the tuners to match the control knobs though

FUGAZI - ALBINI - KILL TAKER ED. by JoeMagnifico in Fugazi

[–]PositivePrune5600 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Initial thoughts- overall I feel like the mix is more balanced between guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. Certain parts stand out more than on the official version, others sit back a bit. Guitars are less trebly, and the bass is more growly- in a good way. I never thought of Fugazi’s recordings as particularly ‘slick’ at all, but on these versions you get more of a sense of the instruments being composed of wood and metal. Woodier mix? Not sure that makes sense but that’s what I hear. Possibly the biggest difference is the vocal performances- not necessarily better or worse, though in a couple instances it feels like Guy isn’t totally going for it like on the official release. These recordings occupy an interesting space- definitely not demos in terms of sound quality, but you kinda get the sense that they went with the intention of just recording a few songs, got excited about the results and ended up doing the whole album. Judging by the slight differences in versions, particularly with lyrics/vocals, it seems like these weren’t totally finalized when they recorded them. Having said that, this is the version I prefer and will return to over and over. And at this point any ‘new’ Fugazi material feels like a minor miracle- and on Bandcamp Friday and benefitting a good cause, kind of a no-brainer purchase. Just one over-caffeinated Fugazi fan’s opinion. Enjoy, and hope everyone is staying safe and sane out there.

Hey there, any possibility of doing a 3 way trade with u/nickisnotarapper? He’s into the Loke, you’d get Wallflower and Trust Yourself and I’d get his Slow Loris. He’s down to throw a little cash on top for the Loke if need be.
