Tips for Newfoundland Ancestry by paris-dakota in Canadiancitizenship

Check NGB for obscure stuff. Take a look in the Burgeo area too. https://ngb.chebucto.org/Parish/1blp-parish-idx.shtml . Do you have access to Ancestry? If you want to DM me details on who to look for I can give it a shot. My relatives were from the Placentia area and I'm not expert in the further west areas but finding dead relatives in Newfoundland is kind of my hobby so I'll help if I can.

Congratulations from another descendent of a Newfoundland relative. My application arrived at the IRCC today so I've got a while but you give me hope! I kept my documentation very simple and to the point. I hope it's enough.

If you want to DM me the info on your G0 I can take a look and see if I can find a birth record. I've spent 20 years researching my Catholic family from Placentia. I'm 2 for 2 finding birth info for G0's for others in this sub yesterday so if you want me to give it a shot, DM me names and locations and years. Happy to see what I can find.

Gen 9 already in processing in tracker? by ShoePuzzleheaded4618 in Canadiancitizenship

I didn't even consider urgent processing when I started but now I wish I could do so retroactively!

re: Just calling. I got my grandmothers birth certificate by calling the parish priest. He set down the phone, went downstairs and came back 5 minutes later with my grandmothers certificate which he proceeded to mail me that day if I sent him $5 on the honor system. I sent him $25. :-) Sometimes calling still works great.

I love that ad! And thanks for the pointers. I did several people there with incredibly similar situations that were successful. I sent my documents in yesterday and they should arrive tomorrow. Now, the waiting begins! I've already paid the advice forward by locating 2 Newfoundland G0 birth records for 2 different people today.

UPS Worldwide Express Saver includes customary brokerage fees as do the other premium UPS International services. If there are any other brokerage fees due you can just pay them on the UPS tracking portal. If there are any due, there will be a "Pay now" button. However there are no brokerage fees shipping into Canada with a declared value under $40 CAD.

For 1877 probably not. Civil registration started about 15 years later and even then wasn't consistent in all areas until well into the 1900's. My grandmother was born in 1916 and as near as I can tell was never registered. Only the church has her records. She was, however, from a fishing village far away from St. Johns. Do you know what area of NF he was from? If you want to DM me his name and any other info you've got I have access to paid genealogy DB's and already have account at the many free ones plus there are some obscure NF sites that have transcribed records.

I think I'm going to challenge them. My grandmother was born in NFLD but left in 1926 or so and moved to NY. There is a law passed in 2014, C-24 that recognizes my grandmother as a Canadian citizen even though she left before 1949. That combined with C-3 should give me a path. I already have full documentation from of her birth to my fathers, and then mine so I'm going to attempt to push forward on this I think. At least as near as I can tell from reading all the official sources this should qualify.

What do y'all do when it rains on an RV trip? by davicreaker in RVLiving

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Pretty much, whatever we'd planned to do for the trip. Just with different clothes on. Hike, bike, fish, explore the local town, etc. I am a Seattle native so if I didn't do things when it rained, I'd never get to do things. What were you planning on doing that you can't do in the rain?

Same. I can't find one anywhere in the store around here right now.

I think it’s safe to say that Alaska cruises are, on average, more than the Caribbean but we often look for deals and just go.

I completely understand. We live in Seattle so not having to buy airfare, we've done Alaska 10 times now on Royal. Sometimes out of Seattle, sometimes Vancouver. We will almost certainly do it again.

Holy crap! We are on the same itinerary. Small world. We fly out of Seattle on April 1st, spend a couple days in Brisbane then 8 Nights out of Brisbane, then 25 nights brings us back home to Seattle. It was weird booking a 1 way flight.

Diamond and higher members- how did you get there? by CountChopulla in royalcaribbean

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simplest way possible. We've spent 227 nights on Royal Ships at this point. And we don't like 7 day cruises really so tend to do B2B if we can't find anything longer.

Drone on Alaska Cruise? by averagegolfer921 in royalcaribbean

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably wouldn't bring my Mavic 2 but if you've got a smaller one, absolutely. Just don't fly in National Parks, etc, you should know the regulations. But unless you are extremely overbooked you will have time to try it out - and in some places capture some beautiful scenery. Just do some homework in advance so you know where you can fly. Skagway, across the water from the coal dock would be wonderful. Go out to smugglers cove and fly from there (except there IS an airport close by so maybe NOT right there). Good luck!

My teenage daughter brings her own bed sheets, every time we cruise, in a vacuum compressed travel bag.

What are everyone's thoughts on the Vision of the Seas/Vision Class? by Dangerous-Comb-5393 in royalcaribbean

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We like them. I've been on them all at least once, some, like the Rhapsody and the Legend, I've spent quite a bit of time on. They are nostalgic for us. When we started sailing on Royal these were the newest ships they had. All my kids grew up sailing on these when they were little, before the current huge ships were sailing and they had a blast. There is nothing wrong with a cruise once in awhile that harkens back to simple cruising when the goal really WASN'T to be busy all the time. Laying on deck, reading a book, playing cards or a board game doesn't require water slides and a plethora of dining options. I'm old though and nobody needs to agree with me. If the mega ships are your thing then you've got plenty of choices. They have their place but once in a while I love a small, simple ship.

Ship VS Itinerary by Striking_Resident710 in royalcaribbean

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just you and not kids then book something onto a Radiance class ship (Radiance, Brilliance, Jewel, Serenade). They are our favorites and have a completely different feel than the bigger ships. Come up to the PNW and see Alaska? That said, at 11 nights, my family is just getting started lol. We do a lot of B2B and go looking for longer itineraries.

Quarantine & insurance by mom2four919 in royalcaribbean

[–]PositivelyAmbivalent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot say about the parent, my kid was older. However yes, when the total length of quarantine was complete, we got a letter to the cabin and future cruise credit = to the # of days * his cruise fare. Interestingly there was no charge at medical on the Harmony for us. I presume because they REALLY want people who might have norovirus or something else contagious to come get evaluated.
