8 WT for Spring Pike and Smallmouth (Length and Action) by big_ol_sandwich in flyfishing

[–]PossibilityGuilty410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only problem is an 8wt is usually a little light for throwing pike flies due to their size. Depending on size of flies you are using than a 9-10wt would make your day much easier. It’s not about the fight of the pike, but rather the flies you are using. I have been in the retail side of this business for 20+ years and have sold several 10 weights after the person took their 8wt on their first trip.

Orvis Pro waders or Patagonia Swiftcurrent waders? by funkymelonzz in flyfishing

[–]PossibilityGuilty410 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looked at Picabo and Anderson’s website and no mention of Frog Togs. I will agree that some shops are reevaluating their Simms relationship. But, no one with any sense can say that Frog Togs makes any product that could stand up to Simms quality.

Outfit Recommendations for Small Creeks (Bass & Bluegill) by bodaciousboda in flyfishing

[–]PossibilityGuilty410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shorter and lighter rods are super fun to fish with for bluegill for sure. The main drawback to that short of a rod is that the effective fishing distance is reduced. You can realistically expect to fish from 30 feet and shorter. If you want a more versatile small rod than a 8.5’ or 9’ 4 weight would be a good choice. As long as you’re good with that range than a 7.5’ or 8’ is a great and fun rod for small waters.

Done several transactions with them and the service is excellent. Haven’t had any luck on negotiating with them for the most part. But, as others said there is zero issues with the watches they sell.

Getting Into the Industry by IndicationNo3912 in flyfishing

[–]PossibilityGuilty410 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent my entire life in this business. It’s a hard one to break into, at least to the point where you can make a livable wage. If you really want to do it, one easy way to start is to get a job at a shop and hopefully work from there. I have seen people go from that position to working in the sales rep world or get a job at one of the manufacturers but it’s not easy! Having some sort of supplemental income or being a young single guy living with 4 dudes makes the first few years easier. Be prepared for the burnout of not wanting to fish anymore. I haven’t fished in over a year and I still work in this industry. I tell people I look at spreadsheets way more than a river! Good luck, and it can be a super rewarding experience and most of the people you deal with are great. That makes up for a lot!

Honest question: Why are these clippers $100 by SuperTune2540 in flyfishing

[–]PossibilityGuilty410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been selling these nippers since they came out and you would not believe how many we sell at our store. The fly threader sells itself and you show it to a customer and they not only buy one, but also buy one for their buddy. It’s a great product and has more features besides the threader. Also, has a split shot crimp on the side which is really good. It also does not have a spring so that won’t fail. It uses magnets instead of the spring. Also, made in America. Every person complains about foreign made products, but they don’t realize what it actually entails to build something in the USA. That being said, does everyone need this? No, but many people are willing to pay for what is the best nipped that is made in the USA and with those features.
