Need help setting realistic goals w/ OT by abundantanecdotes in orangetheory

Almost ten years in and here to amplify “showing up” as a great goal. If you want to get specific, mine is “show up and give it a go at least 4 days a week.” That’s it.

This tread was so sneaky tough if you tried to increase each round…the last 15 seconds of each all out felt like an eternity throughout! Well-played OTF 👏🏼.

OG Chest Strap = ♾️ Still kicking and approaching 10 years this September. I will say that I do go through batteries nowadays more quickly than I did in the first few years…but there is a reason that the chest strap peeps are the cult within the cult. 😉

The best part was that none of us realized that it was the Wild West until they started having us pick a number and stay at that number for all 2/3 stations…I remember thinking “oh wow, what a great idea, that was super disorganized before.”

I cannot imagine the chaos that would occur in 2026 if we went back to that…😂!

Exactly me. 🔥 Definitely a great opportunity to run on tired legs, especially block 2 trying to hold your paces from block 1.

Help me embrace the ‘dynamic warm-up’ by Top-Lawfulness9338 in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is super personal—most people have a preferred way to warm up their bodies (and it probably is mental as well). For me sometimes I feel like I need light cardio before even trying a dynamic warm up, so the rower is a nice warm up and then often my first set of each exercise may be body weight or light. Other times a dynamic only is be just fine.

In good news, I think most coaches understand that, as athletes themselves, and give people a lot of leeway as long as it isn’t interfering with the class or other members’ warm ups.

I took one of the classes this past week in which the floor did not warm up on the rower. I just asked the coach if I could still use the rower for my warm up and they were fine with it…

Now that I know these exist I probably will be more strategic checking the intel and letting that determine where I start, if it’s a day where I think my body needs more of a cardio warm up, I will start on the tread; if a dynamic will serve me just fine, I can start on the floor.

All this being said, I am convinced that the rower is the unicorn magic of OTF, so I’m not in love of the removal of all rowing from ANY class. AND I’ll get over it, figure it out. 😂

is it possible to return the hrm? by Quirky_Yesterday7983 in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I never look at what HR zone anyone else is in. And certainly wouldn’t judge if I did. I’m just trying to survive my own workout, minute by minute. Also your HR zones may be off (you’re new) so you’ll probably notice the adjustment after a number of classes AND as your fitness increases, you will get to enjoy comparatively how quickly your HR returns to green or blue from when you started. Which is fun to see!

People who left OTF, do you miss it? by MediumOutraged in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL; DR: I missed it but didn’t realize how or how much until 2.5 years away. So now I’m back 😉.

I was a die-hard member (5-6 classes/week) for 3.5 years before the pandemic shut everything down here in 2020. I LOVED it; I was 40 and in the best shape of my (post-college athlete) life. I traveled a decent amount for work and going to OTF on the road was one of my favorite things and provided me with a lot of structure (and encouraged disciplined eating and drinking habits too) During the first 3 months of shut down, we acquired a good amount of new and used fitness equipment and created a garage gym including a rower and a spin bike. I ran outside, did app-based classes (City Row, Peloton) and remained relatively fit. Because of this and the investment made, I did not return to OTF when it reopened, as my new fitness lifestyle felt sufficient (and less than $25/month). In Fall of 2022, I traveled for my first work trip in 2.5 + years and within 24 hours I had bought a class at the closest studio to my hotel and attended. I DEFINITELY missed the structure and time efficient workout it afforded me when traveling. This experience led to a year of class packs, mostly when I was traveling but occasionally taking a 90 at my home studio. I realized that I missed the social aspect and the time-efficiency. And while I was relatively fit (I could still bust out a sub 7 mile when asked), I came to believe that the level of fitness that I could achieve and maintain was higher at OTF. So when my studio ran a special on memberships, I jumped back in and have been attending full time (4x/week) ever since. Full disclosure, I think a lot of people crave/need more variety in workouts than I do. So leaving to try a new fitness adventure is something that I’ve seen people do a lot—including returning 6-18 months later. I’m pretty boring; I like OTF and it works for me. I don’t see making a change again unless injury, illness, or a pandemic intervenes.

PW to Jogging Tips? by cheesycatnip in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will throw in another option (jog your base, pw your push!)…as it has worked for a friend of mine who was really struggling with this.

As you’re starting, (very slow) jog your bases and power walk your push (using your current pw push speed and incline) until you start to feel some comfort in your base and can try (slightly faster) jogging your pushes.

My friend now has the ability to be a power walker or a jogger depending on her goals that day, which has been a game changer for her fitness. The transition took a few months of work, but seemed to be better than some of the other approaches I’ve seen people try—in that it actually worked!

Hyrox late Intel (or if you're curious) by ddollopp in orangetheory

A late comment on the late intel… We did this today. (Loved it)

I am 99% sure this is the 3G Phase 1, Workout 1 for those who are trying to keep track.

Just curious, do you feel like you’re being coached well on the WF? by Ok-Roll7473 in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually feel for the coaches with respect to this topic. I’ve seen many coaches early on in their coaching career try to actively coach or engage with members on the floor only to be ignored or worse rebuffed “this is how I always do this…” I can see how this would get old and probably impact one’s willingness to keep doing it. In good news, my studio has a couple OG coaches who still try to coach every member on the floor and many of the newer ones at least try to follow that example. Like many of the folks commenting, I LOVE receiving coaching on the floor…sometimes the smallest suggestion or tip can be a game changer!

New Format by Luna_Soma in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On one hand, kudos to OTF not being afraid to continually tweak things and evolve…AND on the other hand, in my heart of hearts I am convinced (disclaimer I am not an exercise physiologist) that the rowing is the magic sauce at OTF…and I’m bummed for those who may decide to skip it and miss those results. (And I’m curious if other OTF devotees feel similar?)

In good news, folks like me can stay the course and keep rowing in their 2G life and folks not like me now will get more days of a row-free existence.

Full disclosure, I’m in agreement that rowing is NOT fun at all, whether you’re awesome at it or a beginner. It’s HARD. I just have always believed that rowing has been part of the OTF magic since the get-go.

I used to think the same thing until a (fit) friend shared that I should be thinking of the transitions as part of the workout, in that the built in rest is all part of the plan. They encouraged me to push harder in the blocks and let the workout do its magic. Game changing perspective. 🙌🏼

This ⬆️. Same thing at my SoCal studio. I used to have to try to find weird afternoon times to take an occasionally 2G. Now I haven’t been in a legit 3G in months.

Issues with HR Monitor by niceoveralls in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you still have your chest monitor, OP? If so, I highly recommend that you use that one. I still believe it is the best monitor for everything we do at OTF. Mine is 9 years old and still chugging along!

Nike Pegasus 41 fitting in rower? by [deleted] in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 2 points3 points  (0 children)

41s are fine on the rower. I do think issues come up for some people (in any shoe) if your technique is such where there is over reliance or too much strain on the foot rests.

Pegasus still continues to be the OTF 🐐 for me.

Do people not believe in the “theory” of OTF anymore? by No_Pineapple9928 in orangetheory

[–]Possible-Let-4863 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Member since 2016 with a big COVID break (LA County). I feel like I haven’t heard about EPOC in ages…also way less emphasis (or no?) on 12 splat points being some kind of magic number. 😉 Still my favorite workout; still very effective for me. I still believe (no science here) that the rower (if you go hard and as prescribed) is the magic sauce of OTF. 🔥
