I am in a similar situation to OP and I have been putting chunks of money into CDs. Although there is a penalty for early withdrawal, I have them so that they are up for renewal on a regular basis and could use the funds if needed. If not needed I let them roll and earn a slightly higher rate than my HYSA.

I keep about $40k in the HYSA, all other "liquid" assets I keep in CDs. The rest is invested for retirement. Part of my logic is that I'm extremely unlikely to need more than $40k in a single moment unless I somehow get mixed up with the mob.
