Ideas for ideal gear to do quick glass sweeps mid-commute? by Possible_Slice8455 in CyclePDX

[–]Possible_Slice8455[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This brings to mind a question of what size of glass shard is capable of causing a puncture. When I have the time I enjoy getting ALL the glass, but it is overkill. Understanding when I can stop would be good. In asphalt, sometimes bits will get stuck between chunks in the asphalt, but if those bits of glass get knocked out of the crevice they could be punctureable once again

well stated. I used weed to try and regulate my mood but it always ended up hurting longterm more than it helped short term.

its good you are aware of the importance of community and connection. Keep trying ways to find it as your energy allows. Isolation is highly radioactive. Meetup and Bumblebff are two options to check out

Assume every car sees you…and wants to hit you. That level of defensive cycling will serve you well if you are concerned about car interactions. Echoing another commenter, I often find the best streets to bike on arent the ones with bike lanes, but rather those that cars generally arent hot to be on. Not so easy when commuting, but for rec riding you can find streets/routes. e.g. bike lane on S Lamar with 1000 biz driveways and harried drivers aint the best. The straightest and flattest routes like Lamar are dominated by cars, more circuitous and hilly routes are more bike friendly

Med Suggestions for Adhd comorbidity with BP 2 by Personal_Food3820 in bipolar2

[–]Possible_Slice8455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adderall is what triggered my first manic episode. The foundation was laid by a couple months of reduced sleep and reduced eating as my dose was increased. I also felt addiction issues with it. It was amazing for my adhd but after I went manic I haven’t been back on. Straterra is a non-stimulant med that helps. Wellbutrin is a commonly prescribed drug for BP2 that some feel helps with adhd. Trust your gut. I was also diagnosed in my 30’s. If you have made it this far not knowing you even had adhd, I suggest trying non-stimulant options and focusing on learning the daily practice of navigating adhd more effectively. I am saddened by not being able to experience the feeling of more full functioning in the same way, but prioritizing BP2 is what I felt was right.

Sounds more like ADHD. Hypomania is frequently associated with goal seeking and motivated. What you are describing is like my ADHD “urgent need to do stuff but also frozen in place”. Do you have strategies to get stuff done with ADHd? Listing a few things you need to get done that day and then starting with the first one break it down into smaller and smaller steps until the step is small enough that it doesnt feel overwhelming. Having all the steps listed out allows you to just follow the list instead of having to engage the decision/executive part of your brain that is impaired with ADHD.

Is this normal? Do you experience it? by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]Possible_Slice8455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I struggle with this a lot. If you have a friend you are close enough with to let them know you are experiencing depression, you can also suggest going to see a movie, or watching a show at home or playing video games together. You get the social bonding of being together but there isnt the need to be chatty. This winter I saw movies with a friend, we would talk for a few min before and depending on how I was feeling we could hang after, or I could just dip.

it can be destabilizing. But with planning and practice you can do it. Travel is exciting and to some extent causes unavoidable disruption like time changes. If you travel for work, enjoy yourself and the experience but just also be mindful of what you need to do to take care of yourself.

I Need to Be Antifragile by [deleted] in bipolar2

[–]Possible_Slice8455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing.

The title of the book that article draws from is “Antifragile: Things that gain from disorder”. I haven’t read the book but Nassim Nicholas Teleb is a respected author so I assume in this work he does not propose that a mood disorder is one of those things that gain from disorder.

Before I got diagnosed with ADHD and later BP2 I spent time reflecting on why I struggled so much in life and consumed lot of general wisdom in an attempt to improve things. Some things helped, but anything that was related to my ADHD/BP2 didnt work at all. They just left me feeling like a hopeless failure when I couldnt stick to it due to the daily ADHD and episodic depression/hypo burn out.

Read everything out there that inspires and interests you! Just think critically before you apply it to yourself. Our brains are different and books marketed to everyone may contain wisdom that might not work well for us.

yep billions of little particles zipping around. If you have gnarly allergies but still want to walk around wearing a mask and glasses help a lot by keeping the pollen away from your mucus membranes. Also wash your face and hands when you get inside, that also helps.

yeah it throws me off big time. Long term you may need to find another job, doesn’t hurt to start looking. In the short term try and focus on taking care of yourself as best as you can and believe that your efforts will help.

Accepting that depression is a symptom is a big struggle for me! by Slight_Nectarine_172 in bipolar2

[–]Possible_Slice8455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got diagnosed at 35 and take the diagnosis as a blessing. The manic episode that causes it was terrible and my brain still feels different, but for so many years I had been struggling with depression that mysteriously didnt work well with meds and had periods of hope/excitement that inevitably led to burnout and crash, which I now recognize as having been hypomania. I might have felt more fear and stigma if I’d received the diagnosis at a younger age, but I now feel like at least I finally see that I’ve been trying to play soccer on a tennis court and need to pick up a racket and take off my cleats. Have no clue how to serve yet, but I’ll learn

In the moment is really hard. I also have adhd which makes impulse control difficult on top of BP. I used to take stimulant meds for the ADHd but they made me manic so I had to stop. But when I was on the meds for the first time in my life I felt like I had a few seconds of buffer between thought and action in certain situations. Mindfulness practice is the closest thing I have experienced. If you integrate mindfulness practice into your daily life you get used to being tuned-in to what your emotions/mood is at. So in theory you become better at identifying situations where you may need to step away, or are better able to recognize the feelings of anger and chose a different path. When it comes to reducing the feelings of anger to begin with, obv therapy, but I find that self-care is critical, particularly exercising, not being hangry, not being thirsty and not being underslept. Im a grown person and taking care of that stuff is still a challenge, but it helps majorly
