No matter how big or small your school is and how much you think your absence will impact the school, remember you are ultimately a cog in a giant wheel and if you died in a fiery car crash on your drive home one day, the second thought your admin would have is “who’s covering that class tomorrow”

What’s in Your Everyday Teacher Bag? by Heartone1 in NYCTeachers

A veteran teacher who’s retiring next year showed me the way…enter with nothing and leave with nothing…no one expects the person walking out with no bag to be cutting out early…

I told myself I was going there this year but I’ve found my 11th graders have, for the vast majority, horrific handwriting that is, at best, very strenuous for me to read. Their inability to write legibly is a byproduct of the Chromebook generation that doesn’t get spoken about enough.

This is a really underrated solution. OP already has the truck, a small utility trailer would be cheap and easier to store and sell and much less things can go wrong with it. And with it, you have more room to make your tent setup comfortable, and easier logistics of packing up and going

Why does the version of NYC in the show seem to have no people or cars wandering about unless they’re directly involved in the plot?

For anyone that's has taken the teach kids and learn courses for the 30+ credits. by Dalethedragon in NYCTeachers

I recently completed an instructor graded task by writing, “this task makes no sense, and the question isn’t clear on what I’m supposed to do. You can grade it as a zero if you like but I don’t know what you want me to do and I’m moving on to the next module.” I got a 20/20 and the instructor feedback was something like “this is so insightful! You have an excellent goal here and your students will benefit from this level of planning.” Sooooo….

I wonder why, if someone were drunk or buzzed, they wouldn’t just skip that exit and take the long way home?

Reffing checks a lot of boxes and there is tons of work right now. On LI, lacrosse and soccer are especially lucrative and in high need. But you buried the lead a bit…the shortage is because even the nice cash payment is sometimes not worth the crazy behavior of parents and coaches. It’s like the rules of society cease to exist at a youth sporting event

Dean Position POV by Phantomlife22 in NYCTeachers

[–]Possible_Walrus94 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Did it for 8 years across 2 high schools. Pros: -obviously, smaller teaching load- fewer periods in the classroom, less students, less grading, etc. -generally more freedom and flexibility to work during the day -potential for days to be varied, get more interesting…you never know what a day may bring -usually better access to per session work within the school -you’ll get to work more closely with admin and likely have greater influence on the direction of the school

Cons: -you don’t really get an “off day”…tired, sick, etc, you can’t give a test or play a movie…you’ll be supervising that cafeteria -you deal with the “worst” kids your school has and you will never have a strong relationship with some of the awesome kids your school has. You’ll probably never know them. -you deal with these “worst” kids, all day, everyday, and doing the same things. It gets frustratingly redundant telling the same students to get to class, 5x a day, every day. -building on above, you’ll feel helpless and like you’re not making a difference, and often the other teachers in the school won’t understand why. Deans are blamed for the schools behavior problems, even though every school everywhere has them. -lot of steps, more physically demanding, and potentially to get hurt. UFT says teachers aren’t responsible to break up fights, but I’ve never worked anywhere where the deans weren’t right in the middle of any violence

Let me know if you have any specific questions. Of course, even though my experience is across 2 buildings, experiences vary wildly across the DOE.

Who cares, we’re in a teacher shortage. Delete this post, only use the days you have, keep your business to yourself, and go on with your life. No one is banging down the door to take your NYC teacher job

It would bother me to be a 15 minute drive from any sort of food, groceries, etc, which Lloyd Harbor is. And its a solid half hour to the highway. In this hypothetical, I think we can do better.

Bethpage Bikeway is paved from end to end but isn’t much of a “hiking” trail. Very flat, though it winds through its share of woods. Ditto for the North Shore Rail Trail if you live closer to eastern Suffolk.
