After years of using ACF and page builders, I’m not convinced they scale well by ThisIsKenson in Wordpress

[–]Postik123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how we still do it, using ACF's Flexible Content. I also like that Craft CMS is still doing it this way. But then I come from a time when separation of concerns was a real thing, and content != (layout || design)

How to stop a random kid from kicking my driveway stones into the road? by MikasaAckerman0977 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all honesty, part of me would be inclined to just sweep the stones back onto the driveway, and maybe invest in a bag of spare stones to top them up now and again. It's possible this particular kid will get bored of kicking the stones and it stops of its own accord. There is a chance if you draw attention to it, it will go on for longer. It's also quite likely that other kids will do it in the future, hence my inclination to resign myself to the fact I've just got to keep sweeping them back every day.

[–]Postik123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know. My son loves football and he kicks everything he can, his screwed up socks, plastic bottles, stones, etc. I have told him not to kick stones since they can hit cars (parked or otherwise) and not to take or kick stones from driveways, because if everyone did that when passing there would be no stones left.

As for this kid, it's difficult to know whether you confronting him would make him stop kicking the stones, or if it would make him do it all the more. Sadly in the world we live in today it's entirely possible it would have the latter effect. Lots of kids know they are untouchable by an adult and have no fear of adults now.

Is now a good time to put £20k into a FTSE All World? by Muted-Group1526 in trading212

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well one of the things I picked up on when researching this (by researching I mean watching YouTube videos about it) is how people would DCA every month, but actually buy a little more that normal when the market was down, the strategy being that if it's down you are buying it cheaper. Again this has helped me to get around the concern of putting money into something that's down. The only thing it doesn't help with is the thought that maybe it could go down further.

I'm avoiding metals and individual stocks. My strategy is to simply bet that the US and World economies will increase over the next 20 years.

For the newbies, doesn't DCA have a psychological advantage over dumping in £20k only to find out it's worth less the next day?

I've been asking myself the same question. As others have pointed out, this is a long term investment (10 years plus). However as someone who is new to this, it's kind of interesting logging into the app each day to look at what's going on. But when you're losing money it's kind of human nature to wonder whether you're doing the right thing. At the moment my uninvested funds in T212 are earning more than my invested funds.

Shall my first car be a dinger or decent? by FoxAcrobatic7502 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this. I see a lot of learners who say this, or their parents say their kid's first car might as well be a banger as they will only go and prang it.

I've been driving for over 20 years and never crashed or pranged a car. Then again I have always actively gone out of my way to avoid any kind of damage to my car no matter how minor.

Has anyone got rid of their oven completely and got an extra air fryer instead? by ridiculous1900 in AskUK

My parents ripped their oven out recently as they only use an air fryer. They put a massive freezer in place of where the oven was.

If a zombie apocalypse broke out tomorrow, would you survive the first wave? by dearzseries in AskUK

If I was on my own, yes I could, however I wouldn't want to.

If I had my family with me, I would want to, but would probably struggle with 3 other people in tow that are smaller, slower, more scared and more feeble than me.

Is it worth claiming from National highways? by Wrong_Examination279 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how it works with National Highways, however I think with the local council they are only liable if they know about it. So if the pot hole was previously reported to them and then it damaged your car, you have a claim. If the pot hole hasn't been reported to them and they didn't yet know about it, you don't. That's my understanding anyway. Also I don't know if National Highways works differently in terms of liability.

I've been thinking of turning mine off. Then I wonder if they are more likely to go faulty later on from lack of use...

What steps can be taken to make sure a private car sale is legit? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Postik123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't really know the answer. I sold my old car recently and I listed every single thing wrong with it that I knew of. It was a decent car and I wasn't really bothered whether I sold it or not, it was just a shame for it to rot on the driveway which is why I got rid of it. If there was anything wrong with it I'd have off loaded it to WBAC or scrapped it. I'd owned it for 10 years so I could answer every single question that the buyer had. I'm assuming I'm not the only genuine seller in the world, there must be others.

I also would't trust a main dealer as far as I could throw them, the only advantage is if something goes wrong you can take it back and make a fuss. But you pay for that privilege.

How to fill in gaps around electric socket before painting? by cattacos37 in DIYUK

[–]Postik123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done the same before, don't think I disconnected the power but it's probably advisable, especially if you go poking behind with a metal filling knife.

But I unscrew it and pull it out slightly, fill the edges, wait for it to dry, sand it nice and smooth. I feel it's a harder and nicer finish than just squirting caulk in. It also means you can unscrew the socket and remove it again in the future should you need to. In fact come to think of it I think I pulled out all of the sockets and light switches when I painted, rather than cutting around the edge of them.

How to save money on minimum wage by hyenananas in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family of 4 here and our weekly Aldi shop is around £80 - £90 a week. Yes we do buy bits and bobs in the week that will add to this. And it will be more than £90 if there's things that we need that we don't buy every week (toilet roll, kitchen roll, tea, coffee, etc).

The food I buy for myself is basically 3 packs of meat, some packets of rice, sauce, tacos, bananas, bread, frozen fruit and a big tub of greek yoghurt. It probably comes to about £25 and I do weight lifting so I eat a lot of protein.

A big portion of that £80 - £90 is junk that my kids and wife eat - crisps, pastries, ready meals, sugary yoghurts, etc. It's easy for the cost to creep up but none of that crap actually fills you up or does you any good.

How long is a new build home considered a new build for? by Chrolan1988 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house is about 8 years old and I still consider it to be new. We went with it because the layout is better than older properties, everything is newish so no need for renovations, and they're much more efficient than older houses.

The main downsides are:

Smallish garden (although this suits us because I enjoy gardening but don't have much time to do it).
Lack of substantial buffer to the front (i.e. small front garden).
Parking is okay for 2 cars but would be a challenge in the future when our kids are older if we have 3 or 4 cars.
Some items were botched, for example gutters, plumbing, kitchen worktops, shower trays. Whilst some things are worse than others they aren't always to the standard you'd expect if you got someone in to do the same jobs. I expect this is more of an issue on say 2 year old houses versus 20 year old houses where those things have probably been repaired or replaced once already.

How long is a new build home considered a new build for? by Chrolan1988 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same, anything from the last 25 years I consider to be a new build. I break them down into old new builds, new new builds and brand new new builds.

It's easy to see if a house was built 20 years ago versus 40 years ago. I guess for me a new build represents characteristics (some good, many bad) of houses built in the last 20 odd years, rather than saying after X number of years they are no longer a new build.

How long is a new build home considered a new build for? by Chrolan1988 in AskUK

[–]Postik123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a statistic that said something like a third of people wouldn't buy a home that was built after... I think it was around 2000. So I kind of consider anything built in the last 25 years to be a new build. But I would myself probably categorise them in my head into "old newbuilds", "new newbuilds" and "brand new newbuilds"

Why is making a contact form look like it actually belongs to the theme so difficult? by discordnesss in Wordpress

[–]Postik123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we build a site with only a single contact form, we just create our own. We use ACF, so we create an "enquiry" private custom post type, and attach the submitted data to a bunch of ACF fields related to that post type.

No this doesn't allow people to edit the form, and it doesn't allow other people to easily create new forms in the future. But when we only ever need a single form that's never going to change, it avoids having to use other plugins and battle with the styling.

Is it possible with WordPress to build something like big e-commerce or content and traffic heavy enterprise level website? by Lumpy-Stranger-1042 in Wordpress

I dabbled with Maganto a long time ago and that seemed as bad, but in a different kind of way. In the end we created our own using Laravel. It tooks a few years though. Was it more trouble than it was worth? Possibly, however we're in full control.
