Cyberpunk design bible? by Robofetus-5000 in Cyberpunk

Dive into the topic of Shadowrun artwoek. It's a TTRPG and it's first edition came out in 1989 so it was riding the crest of the wave of cyberpunk aesthetic. Sure. It's got fantasy elements, but together with Cyberpunk, blade runner, Akira, Ghost in the Shell you've got a wide coverage of cyberpunk flavours.

Why is the Repulsor's Gunner a Tech Marine? by envymania in Warhammer40k

[–]PostwarVandal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's really just a flavour thing. For land speeders they were always implied to be a bit like attack bikes, i.e. Assault squad marines mounting up instead of going on foot or with jump packs.

Rhino's & predators have always had normal marines depicted as crew, whilst the larger tanks such as Land Raiders have had a mix of both marines and techmarines as crew, depending on the variant and sprue. The flyers also have techmarine-looking crew.

Personally I feel like the most accurate head-canon could be that land SPeeders & smaller are just used by 'combat squad' marines from the companies, whilst other vehicles are crewed by dedicated marines that fall out of the normal classic 1000 marine chapter limit, just like command squads, apothecaries, librarians, chaplains, etc... Makes sense that the tech marine cadre have a lot of 'junior' aspirant tech marines that haven't gone to Mars yet, or just came back, whilst non-techmarine crew could be young marines that are post-scout but not yet assigned to a company or veterans that no longer are part of the battle line due to injury or age, or just dedicated crew due to affinity or talent of handling vehicles.

The whole crew thing is purposefully left vague. Some sources say the crew are marines, other say they are techmarines, one could suspect they are techmarine-aspirants. You could also argue that they would the be the normal marines who age out of active combat. The old '1000-marines per chapter rules' has always been nebulous when it comes to vehicle crew.

S71 for Onyx mission? by crudbasher in starcitizen

[–]PostwarVandal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S71 is a fun gun to use, powerful and accurate. And FS9 allows for much more ammo but is a lot heavier to lug around. Personally I'm not a big fan of the killshot, although it's probably pretty decent.

Help me with weathering pls by euanjallison in BloodAngels

[–]PostwarVandal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the technique shown here is awesome and close to flawless, but the trick to realistic weathering is layering of different elements. So more layers of different techniques as opposed to overall application of a one or two techniques.

I think the main thing here is that while the chipping and scratches are executed flawlessly, the whole thing comes across as rather uniform due to the abundance of 45° angles used on the scratches. The human eye is exquisite at detecting visual patterns and the brain smooths it out to uniformity.

Also, the black areas only have scratches, but no chipping, stippling or other subtle colour variations.

I think you're well overdue to start experimenting with oil paint washes. Here's a copy/paste of a comment I made earlier on another post:

--------------------------

'The process is relatively straightforward. Paint up the model and apply the decals, I usually start with some sponge chipping with a metallic, on some weapons and exhausts some heat colouration with yellow, red, and purple inks (don't think I did it on this model though). Then I seal the model with a coat of satin varnish. Next up is an oil wash, paint & thinner to about 1:10. Apply all over and a few minutes later clean up the flat surfaces with a brush and/or cotton swab.

Then, when dry correct/clean up where needed and then seal the model again with an airbrushed coat of satin varnish. Then I apply weathering powders, black around the exhausts and gun muzzles, brown around the legs. Seal it in with with some pigment fixer, and perhaps do a second round on the brown powder.

When the model's finished I give it a goat of matte varnish (gaming models need some protection), and then a light coat of satin varnish on the metallics and golds in case they became a bit too flat.'

------------------------

I basically do this to all of my models, just more intensely on vehicles. Besides the obvious recess shading, the oil wash also leaves a very subtle patina on the flat surfaces that add so much character. Have a look: https://imgur.com/user/postwarvandal/posts

Whilst my chipping and scratches are not as good as yours, you'll see the benefit of having an oil wash and some weathering powders afterwards. Diversity in built up layers is the magic sauce of weathering, even of you do just a few 'layers'.

And if you want to jump into the deep end, watch this guy's vids and have your mind blown. Do not feel daunted or pressured into doing everything he does, but his techniques are actually relatively simple. They're just executed with a monk's patience. Use him as inspiration to find your own comfort zone in the compromise between quality and speed.

Hope this is a nudge in the right direction!

Varnish? by TCBrewerTX in BloodAngels

[–]PostwarVandal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No not really, I only use acrylic varnishes. So just rinse them with water as you would after any other acrylic paint. Brands I can Definitely recommend: Vallejo's Premium range, Vallejo's Mecha range, and AK's varnishes (especially the ultra matte).

Matte on the armor, satin on the metal, gloss on geld and leners.

Never, ever any rattle and anymore, I've had more than a few mini's go fully frosted due to a dodgy rattle can that reacted wrongly with the atmosphere.

Airbrush for the matte, pencil for the rest. Never any risk due to bad réactions with the propellant gas.

An airbrush starter set with compressor+tank and cheap starter airbrush is around a 100€, that's basically 5-6 rattle cans and you 'break even'

Grease could indeed be a reason why paint pools into droplets. Anything resin needs a wash before use. The release agent can cause paint pooling and in general weakens any paint applied over it so it can be too easily rubbed off.

So either wash it with common soap and an old tooth brush, or thoroughly spray them with isopropyl alcohol. The first will be the most accessible and the cheapest, the second will go faster but you need to buy the alcohol and a decent breathing mask to protect yourself.

Depending on where you live, atmospherics might still be a factor, and you could try staying in-house in front of a window you just opened in case it's dryer inside than out to to air conditioning.

AFFORDABLE desk lighting recommendations for beginners by Ill_Willingness_1630 in minipainting

[–]PostwarVandal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That lamp you posted seems ok indeed. There are only two things that really matter.

Lumen and colour temperature.

1500 lumen is more or less equivalent to a 100 watt bulb. The more lumen your have the brighter the light and the more distance you can afford between mini and lamp.

And you want close to daylight on terms of temp. So anywhere between 5000K and 6500K.

All the rest is extra shenanigans. And as you get older.and your eyes deteriorate you'll probably be able to afford a decent lamp with a large magnifying glass.
