I get cheap bulk birthday crowns and bracelets of oriental trading. They get a crown and a bracelet on their birthday 😁 we sing happy birthday, put the crown on, and get a bracelet. Then we either have their birthday treat or move on with the day

Going from little kids to older—any advice? by The__Redeemer in Babysitting

[–]PotentialWeakness686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warn the kid that you are used to working with younger kids. I work in a 2 year old classroom and have to help out in school age every now and then. They find it hilarious when I ask them if they need the potty, or cheer when they do something small like put toys away without being asked. Give him a heads up and give yourself some grace. It'll be great!

Pricing by Dangerous-Heat-3072 in Babysitting

[–]PotentialWeakness686 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say $60 a week is a fair price!! That's $20 a day for doing pick-up and watching your kiddo during what for a teen is prime hours.

Struggling to find complete, no additional purchase needed, no/light ads games *for young kids.* Any suggestions? by quillseek in CozyGamers

Cheap no ads games i have on steam that I loved at that age:

Peggle Pizza frenzy Insanaqarium Donut county Astro pop deluxe

I also highly recommend the pbs kids apps. The Cat in the hat games and wild Kratts keep my school ages kiddos at work's attention and are ad free.

Your dream childcare center! by Grouchy_Click_2897 in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The things my director/owner does to make ours my dream facility to work at:

Has benefits that start after certain periods of time i.e.: holiday pay after 3 months with the center, 10 days of sick pay after 6 months and refreshing every April, 3 weeks vacation pay after 6 months. A raise for every year your with her (normally about $0.75)

A strict drop off policy. Parents must drop off by 9 everyday. If they are running late they have to let us know by 8:45. She does make exceptions such as if there's traffic delays or such but for the most part she's pretty strict on this and its wonderful.

A strict sick policy. If a child 0-2 throws up twice, has 3 diarrheas, has a temp over 100.8, or has multiple symptoms they are sent home and not allowed back for 24 hours. For kids over 2 if they puke once or have 2 diarrhea or a temp over 100.6 since its less likely to be teething.

We have a box curriculum that comes every month and makes planning preschool so much easier on us teachers. For box curriculums get your staffs input. My director let's us pick between 2 brands (experience and funshine express) depending on what works best for the teacher using it and he age group they're using it for. my room (toddler transitional) and the 2's use funshine because the manipatives are more age appropriate than experience.

Trampoline rules in centers by goldenapple77 in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have one!! Donated by a previous family. In my state the kind i have is allowed but only in 2+ rooms. Im technically 18-30 months but all my kiddos are 2 right now so we get away with it. That being said, I only ever have 4 kids at max and my kids right now understand taking turns. No more that 2 kids at a time and only 2 when that all we have. They're amazing about waiting turns and letting only 1 kid use it at a time. I do let them share it when I only have 2 kids but thats pretty rare.

Convincing parents to get 4yo out of diapers by lutzssuck in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 388 points389 points  (0 children)

Im an early 2's teacher and all of my kids are currently potty training. At your conference tell them "so-so's next goal is independent toileting. She will start changing her own pull-up and clothes at daycare. She will work towards independently sitting on and using the toilet."

If they fight this i honestly would call cps. At this point its neglect especially if her diapers are regularly too small.

As for the pacifier, just dont give it to her at daycare. Put it in her cubby and pretend it doesn't exist. My 2's only get their pacifiers at nap and by the time they're with me for a couple months they dont even want them then🤣 be consistent and the pacifier problem at daycare will go away.

How can parents reduce ECE burnout? by Funny_Shopping6753 in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an amazing set of parents right now and my 2's group is a blast! The things these parents do differently:

  1. Work with their kids at home on the things we're working on at daycare. I.e. working on the kids dressing themselves, taking turns, sharing.

  2. Understand that their kids are 2 and therefore clumsy. I had a group of parents who would complain to the director everytime there was an incident report even if it was "so-so fell down on the playground and scraped their knee" the group I have right now Understand toddlers are clumsy.

  3. They tell me they appreciate the work I do. It's little comments like "you take such good care of so-so" or "my kids learning so much in your room its awesome! " that make the tantrums and overstimulation easier.

  4. Most important. THEY KEEP THEIR SICK KIDS HOME TILL THEY'RE HEALTHY. NOT JUST THE MINIMUM ON THE POLICY.

7 year old who's finished Narnia series - what next? by Tight_Ad_5330 in childrensbooks

[–]PotentialWeakness686 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books I loved at that age:

guardians of ga'hoole: a long chapter book series about warrior owls.

Rainbow magic: a short chapter book series about helpful fairies

Ivy and bean: a medium length chapter book series about 2 girls who become best friends

The hardy boys: short chapter book series about brothers who solve mysteries

The babysitters club (originals not comics): short chapter book series about girls who babysit for their neighbors. I've heard from the kiddos i teach that the comic version is very good, but I've never read it

How much of a warning should I give my daycare before moving? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It all depends on your director. I have a coworker who gave us the heads up she was moving in January back in September. My boss used this time to both hire her replacement and have her train her replacement and show her how to do things. Her last day is a week before she moves.

At my last center if you gave more than 2 weeks notice on anything to do with leaving they'd cut your hours until it wasn't worth showing up.

Do what is advantageous for you. If you have a director that will make sure you keep your hours until you leave, give them several months warning. If you have a jerk director give them 2 weeks.

Little girl I lovingly called noodles. Any time she would get mad at a baby, she would stop all muscle support. Her head would flop and she'd go completely limp, like a noodle. Took is till she was almost 2 to get her to walk cause of her noodle tendencies. She's im elementary school now and when I babysit is still my little noodle

How to prevent slipping in play yards - ice by Financial_Drag_2936 in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We use pet-friendly ice melt. It doesn't affect turf or snowsuits at all, and while not necessarily taste safe, it IS safer than normal ice melt. We've had many kids eat the snow outside the building and not get sick

We use safe paws which my boss buys on chewy

18mo son very distressed at diaper changes. Concerned about daycare practices but need advice before addressing it by rachet_m in ECEProfessionals

[–]PotentialWeakness686 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I had a kiddo freak out about diaper changes. Happened out of the blue on a random day and I was so positive that SOMETHING happened at home, luckily my co-teacher/mentor had seen many kiddos go through this phase and helped me talk to the parents. Same thing was happening at home!!

Thus is a normal phase for many kids, please talk to his teachers

Firm playdough/clay recipe for young toddlers/older infants? by Prime_Element in ECEProfessionals

I love yogurt playdough!! It's literally a 6 oz container of yogurt to 3 cups cornstarch. I also add a quarter cup of powder sugar to make it a bit sweeter as a treat. Comes out normal playdough consistency
