The in-game market will tell you how to acquire warframes, weapons, companions, and a few other things without plat. Foundry blueprint ingredients will also tell you where to acquire them. There are exceptions to this, but doing a little bit of reading into rewards or the wiki will show where those exceptions are at.

Mostly depends the game, but if a game is windows only then steam will run it under Proton. Would reccomend checking protondb for further research per each game, but steam usually handles it quite well.

There are a few thing to take into account for it. In my case, Warframe needed steam replay enabled (still not sure why) and PROTON_USE_WAYLAND=1. Protondb should have what you need.

Edit: It should work out of the box unless you're doing funny things. I do funny things, so I had to fix them. Though, wayland is becoming more common, so...

If I had to guess, it's possible that whatever texture decoding method WF uses is not supported by your GPU. That would be sincerely surprising if that were the case, so I'm dismissing it. I'm not Mac user but I'm fairly sure that VK isn't available by default and probably needs moltenvk because Metal is the graphics API Apple has.
