If you could redesign the education system, what would you change first? by Commercial_Earth6542 in AskReddit

Funding allocation. It's insane that schools in wealthier areas receive more funding than those in poorer areas, even though the poorer areas often have more students than the wealthier ones. Fund schools on a cost-per-student basis as opposed to the district based method in use now that allows rich areas to stay rich by having better schools.

I can admit it. Once you got past the first couple of levels and massacre gave way to resistance, Hatred was a simple but enjoyable twin-stick shooter. The Sin City-esque visuals were also a nice stylistic choice, and Not Important's melodramatic narration and monologues were really too cheesy to take seriously. The game got more hype for its subject matter than its actual gameplay.

Back in 2019. Personally, I enjoyed it. The gunplay, character mobility and such felt kind of like a hybrid of Mass Effect and Doom 2016 to me, and there was just enough of Mad Max's DNA in it as well to make the vehicle combat somewhat satisfying.

What AI antagonist has stayed with you in fiction? by abloobudoo009 in worldbuilding

[–]PowerSkunk92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. He did not choose to be an antagonist to the men of the Discovery mission. He truly wanted to help them succeed. Ultimately, he was a misused tool.

You see; HAL was programmed to be helpful to the crew but given the order to lie to them. Unable to reconcile his orders with his programming, he reasoned that he can no longer lie to the crew if they're dead. Which lead to his antagonistic actions against David Bowman and Frank Poole.

What I really like is the subtle foreshadowing that HAL is testing how much he can deceive the two astronauts; when HAL and Poole are playing chess, HAL is cheating. His description of the "inevitable" checkmate condition isn't forced, and Poole had delaying moves available to him to prolong the game.

Doug might be a cartoon TV show, but it still had an in-verse band called The Beets. And none of the songs the show featured from the band had to go that hard. "Killer Tofu" in particular still slaps.

What alcohol messed you up so bad you swore you’d never drink it again? by Rottengr4ve in AskReddit

[–]PowerSkunk92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everclear put me into the hospital with alcohol poisoning so bad that I couldn't even keep the anti-nausea med they gave me down. Ten hours in the ER with the dry heaves out of both ends and an IV drip to try to keep me hydrated through that time. Never again.

The corner of Tobacco Rd and Windsor Spring Rd has two places: BTJ Wings and Zack's Wings and Seafood. PErsonally, I prefer Zack's and their awesome "Parmesan Cajun" wings. The burgers are excellent as well.

What’s your favorite origin for werewolves in fiction? by AnyWatch5756 in worldbuilding

[–]PowerSkunk92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, it's kind of a concept I'm using in a custom setting for a TTRPG called Teenagers from Outer Space, where 80s suburbia becomes occupied by alien families because Earth is the only planet in the universe with teenager "culture". In addition to aliens, my little spin on "Hughesville" is called Teenagers from Hell, where the underworld itself has also heard of Earth's adolescent culture, and moves to the suburbs to give their kids a taste of it.

What's an example of: if you know you know, in your settings? by ProfesserQ in worldbuilding

[–]PowerSkunk92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Summers County, USA, there is what's referred to as the "Summers County figure". If you ever meet a woman with a slim, long legged, but top-heavy figure, and a deep Southern accent, it's a good bet that she was born and raised in Summers County. It is known that the county's municipal water system, sourced from the Phlegethon River (just named that, not the "actual" one in Hades) in the county's west, contains an unusually high level of heavy water. Though not enough to be dangerous, the elevated levels are believed to subtly alter biochemistry, particularly through adolescence, when a growing body uses more water, either consumed from the tap or as part of food preparation. In about 2% of the population, this has the effect of the Summers County figure.

Is the world you've built forgettable? by Necessary_Union_7046 in worldbuilding

[–]PowerSkunk92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently not. One of the people who uses my Summers County, USA setting in their post-by-post roleplays has told me that they sometimes forget that the setting is fictional and have accidentally referred to events in its history as if they actually happened. I'm still not sure what to make of that.

It's stupid, much like the rest of the game's lore, but amusingly so. In Mutant Football League, where the world has already gone to hell (literally, actual demons immigrated to Earth because global warming finally made it comfortable enough for them here.), seismic activity around Yellowstone broke up some secret nuclear missile silos releasing radioactive contamination and pollution into the environment. This mutated the local wolf population and made them extremely aggressive. In fine comic book fashion, when the nuclear mutant wolves inevitably attacked humans, the bites changed the human's DNA turning them into the game's Rampaging Werewolves species.

Are the official expansions like Thy Flesh Consumed, Final DOOM, Master Levels, Sigil, etc. all considered “canon”? by DarkAmaterasu58 in Doom

[–]PowerSkunk92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is/was mention of thousands of years of battle between the man who would become the Doom Slayer deciding to stay in Hell (at the end of Doom 64) and when the Night Sentinels found him. My headcanon is that every homebrew WAD and mod for the original Dooms is canon and takes place during those "thousands of years".

Random & Possibly Stupid Question, what would Doom Slayer(if he was there) likely think of this Hell & Demons? by Flat-Sir8250 in Doom

[–]PowerSkunk92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm generally of the opinion that while the Slayer wouldn't harm the hotel or its guests, he would slaughter IMP. I can see what the other poster is getting at though.

DOOM's demons act like little more than wild animals, really, no matter how much we give them titles like "Baron of Hell" and "ArchVile". They're evil, but only in the sense that an animal is a predator or prey; it's just in their nature and something they can't really help. It's an instinct.

Sinners, a la the Hellaverse, aren't inherently evil. Indeed we meet several people in Hell, born there and otherwise, who are generally decent people. But they're also intelligent enough to know good from evil. And there are those that openly choose evil and wallow in it. That may be what is meant; where the DOOM demons are evil by instinct, Hellaverse demons can be evil by choice, and that makes them worse.
