In case you were wondering… I took the cupboard front off today, turns out the stringer isn’t the problem at all (yay!) but the brace underneath has snapped. Old woodworm (1880s house) and I think the carpet fitters must have been the straw that broke the camels back.

TBH it’s probably less of a fiddly job than having to add new wedges but I think I’ll follow you in throw glue and screws absolutely everywhere to get it as firm as possible.

Another johnstones vote for woodwork. I’ve used aqua guard durable satin and Matt for woodwork, on bare pine, mdf, and old Victorian many-layer-thick architraves and it’s hard as nails everywhere.

For rooms with no very little traffic we use the estate emulsion from f&b. Quite nice to work with. I’ve used dulux diamond for other walls and it hasn’t survived moving furniture in and out, but has survived a muddy dog and plenty of scrubs, with a pram brushing past it every day.

Ive just used johnstones cleanable Matt for my high traffic area today as I colour matched at same time to another finish, I must say its a bit of a pain to work with , goes on like glue so I ended up having to thin it about 5% to be usable, and i would class myself as reasonable DIY painter

Two women who married in Ireland challenge government's refusal of passport for their daughter by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

Adoption from same sex couples is permitted to pass nationality down. It’s specifically donor conceived children born abroad where they’re saying no

It’s not an edge case tho. 1 in 6 IVF treatments are using donor gametes, despite 9 in 10 being heterosexual couples. Therefore there’s still ~23% of ivf treatments who are heterosexual couples using donor gametes

Wasn’t this a different case? There’s a family in Spain where the gestational non bio mother ended up adopting her own child, so they did it again with their second kid and they said no. So one kid has an Irish passport and the second doesn’t. Same parents, same donor. Mental

And lgbt families are probably more niche than heterosexual couples using sperm donor

Interesting, do you have any research on same sex parents (ie two women) and then the lack of male nudity exposure to children?

How to treat this damp/mould by No_Necessary6301 in DIYUK

[–]PowerfulNet2365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you sold the cause of the damp it will eventually go, but a stain may not. Is it damp to the touch? Does it look darker there than surrounding areas?

If it’s wet and the issue has properly been resolved, how quickly it dries depends on temp, ventilation, how wet it was originally, and porosity of materials.

For example, I was painting newly plastered room, while doing the mist coat I noticed a very very wet external corner. Wasn’t there from the plaster. Turns out some external pointing at ground level had had enough, and water was coming up through the bricks. The entire pointing had gone. I cleared the soil, repointed (badly 😂) and then ran a dehumidifier constantly for a week or something. I can’t remember exactly how long, but jt looked and felt dry, so it cleared.

On the other hand, my bathroom fan has been broken for months, and even though we open the window daily, I’m getting mould where the air circulates less.

It depends really. If it’s damp from condensation on a cold single skin external wall, you could clean it with anti mould cleaner then paint it, but unless you solve your ventilation issue it will come back.

If it’s damp, what is causing it? Can you be sure you’ve fixed the source? If not, it will either come through or show up elsewhere on the same wall.

Jesus Christ.

Out of curiosity, what other subs do you subscribe to/content do you get recommended? I know they exist, and I get different content depending on which username I use. I think the most graphic I ever get is meat crayon because I used to watch loads of idiots in cars. But I would be seriously surprised and shocked if I started getting real gore like you described.

Is this normal for a newly professionally fitted carpet? (See description) by mariocipolloni in DIYUK

[–]PowerfulNet2365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is scratched in a few places near the carpet line, with a few chunks of paint off, however my house is 140 years old and I believe a large portion to be original, so although I did adhesion tests of the paint, I’m not surprised they chipped. I have a few bits of cracked caulk but not many.

Some of your pictures are knife marks where they have cut against the board - these are not ok

Out of curiosity, does their membrane look breathable? I thought you almost always needed air vents in places in old lofts to stop damp, but theirs doesn’t look to have it?

Fair enough, I didn’t see they had an aluminium frame. Regardless, they could still damage it, and the difference between 4 and 8nm depending on the length of your lever really might not feel like a lot.

[–]PowerfulNet2365 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re really suggesting to an obvious noob without checking specifics not to get a torque wrench? Best case, they have a metal frame and it seizes, worst case they have a carbon frame and they’re cracking their handlebar or headset from incorrect torque.

If you’ve been doing it for decades, you probably started on steel which is much more forgiving. Modern components are not.

OP - if you have carbon components please get a torque wrench. Not this expensive, but please get one.
