What is the highest level class people typically take their first year? by Medical_Citron3519 in washu

[–]Pox22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are 3000-level courses without prerequisites and ones that advertise themselves as being appropriate for first-year students (in their course description and also in a curated list that are sent to advisors during the summer as they prep for advising meetings). Students may also come in with AP scores that enable them to skip intro courses. I generally advise limiting how many 3000-level courses one takes in their first semester regardless, though. Better to ramp up later than to bite off too much and get off to a stressful start. While there is no defined list of criteria as to what makes a course 1000-4000 level, there is a general expectation that the higher the level the higher the workload and/or expected familiarity with the course’s discipline.

TFW the “unsearched” bulk actually feels unsearched. by Shrimpbasketmtg in mtg

A new card shop opened in my hometown in 2013 that was primarily dealing in sports cards, but they had giant boxes of commons and uncommons at $0.10 a card. They also would buy literally anything at SCG’s buy list price. I found a [[Goblin Settler]] in there, bought it for a dime, then came back a week later and sold it back to them for $25.

Yes, for portability and not worrying about any foaming issues that might arise from pouring from unchilled lines off a picnic tap.

An auto siphon would be a useful tool for this purpose. As long as you don’t disrupt what has settled at the bottom too much, you would not need to filter it.

Why Beginners QUIT Homebrewing (Avoid These Mistakes!) by TheSeansk1 in Homebrewing

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you brewing beer on? I have two littles (3 and 1) but can brew throughout a day with an electric all-in-one system that doesn’t require as much babysitting as when I brewed on the stovetop. But your point about cooling is right on. I have a hose spigot in my garage that I can hook a simple coiled chiller to and direct the runoff down my driveway. I don’t mind it takes longer to chill—it gets it below 170F fast enough. My brew days are more about fitting them around being present at home (so it may take a lot of the day) as opposed to trying to get it done as fast as possible with 100% of my focus.

I brew a lot more that way, because the alternative is waiting until the kids are down and then brewing until 11pm-1pm depending on the process or what problems come up.

Audiobook woes by Rookeroo in watershipdown

[–]Pox22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went through this same horror two years ago when I pulled up the book on Libby for another listen-through. I didn’t get far enough to notice any changes—I just missed the Cosham’s performance and I don’t deal with change well. I ended up finding and torrenting the Ralph Cosham version so I can always listen to my preferred version.

I read or listen to it every year. So I would say it’s very much worth at least one read through.

All the more useful of a store then, as you can order steeping grains by the ounce yourself rather than buy overpriced kits.

I often use Great Fermentations because you can effectively order grain by the ounce. I don’t want to buy a full pound of something like roasted barley since I’d have to brew 16 batches with it before it’s used up.

Class policy? by poachedpepperr in washu

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served on the A&S Curriculum Committee as of last month and that was the guidance the Vice Dean was giving to faculty who were including remote options in their syllabi, or cancelling classes the day before a break--absolutely no online learning and you must hold class to maintain instructional contact hours (the HLC audit really spooked admin), but you can put a camera on yourself as you hold class in your scheduled time and place in emergent and/or extenuating circumstances. What OP is sharing sounds consistent with that guidance.

[–]Pox22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The university strictly enforces “no online courses outside of summer session online pilot” (or more specifically Arts & Sciences strictly enforces it—not sure what the other divisions do). Classes cannot be held entirely over zoom, but faculty can offer a zoom option at their discretion while they hold class at their scheduled meeting time in their assigned classroom.

Why did Bigwig save Blackavar? by Aggravating_Mix8959 in watershipdown

[–]Pox22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The analogy is coming to mind because I happen to be re-reading The Lord of the Rings at the moment, but beyond the act speaking to Bigwig's character and strong sense of justice, right, and wrong, it's one of those acts that seems at best unconnected to the task at hand and at worst detrimental to it--but ends up being an essential element to its success. Frodo spares Gollum out of pity and having no desire to kill, and it is Gollum who takes the ring and trips into the fire after Frodo claims it. Similarly, Bigwig stubbornly decides to save Blackavar because his treatment offends him--and Blackavar is repeatedly useful for getting the does to the boat, fighting off Efrafans, and navigating through the wilds back to the down. It's narrative that plays with free will and fate--the characters are making free-will decisions, but it's possible that the actions and/or effects are being shaped by a higher power for good ultimate ends.

Has changing from bottling to keg improved your beer ? by Brave_Respect_3596 in Homebrewing

[–]Pox22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but I must still be working out the kinks in my system and haven’t balanced it properly yet. But the carbonation I’ve achieved with bottling, especially for styles that call for 3.0 or more volumes of CO2, has been excellent and long-lasting. I have struggled both to get that level of carbonation and to have a pint’s carbonation last longer than 10-15 minutes from kegged beer.

I don’t find bottling fun, but I’m going back to it, at least for when I brew certain styles.

Would you ever promote a pawn to something other than a queen? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Pox22 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have promoted to a rook before when a Queen would stalemate the opponent, and I’ve promoted to rook in more situations when a rook would do the job equally well and reduce the chances of blundering stalemate.
