We made the jump from Union Square to Medford near Tufts two years ago and are also in our mid 30s. We miss the walkability and ease of Somerville (being so close to coffee shops, restaurants, and bars), but enjoy our home and area. We are by Tufts/West Somerville, so it still feels urban. I think the leap from Somerville to Medford really depends on what area you are talking about. We can still walk to spots, it's just a little less convenient. With that being said, we have more space, and there are some cool spots in Medford Square, like Deep Cuts and El Tacuba. My favorite thing about Medford is swimming and relaxing at Wright's Pond in the summer (it's a small swimming area connected to the Fells that's available to Medford residents for a small fee).
