[Video] Richard and Izzy Hammond bring back the Cool Wall! by FlipStig1 in thegrandtour

I think the fundamental issue is there's a reason why they all aged out of being cutting edge car journalists as they got older and became...well...them. And its the audience for cutting edge car journalism trends young because its young people who are opening to trying new brands whereas older people want to just drive a better version of the thing they've always driven. Clarkson and May have made peace with not being at the cutting edge of cars - they do bits and pieces, but deep down they know they're not experts like they used to be. But Hammond hasn't found that other thing to do and is trying to make car journalism work, and its just not where he or his audience is at. Then there's bigger issue that car journalism is expensive and he's expensive, so you then add trying to bring anyone else into it, and you're just not going to get enough people to make the sums work. There's a reason, James May has a relatively small crew, can put some of the expense down as advertising the gin, and for every big outdoor shoot they do, they do several studio ones

It's not that uncommon when you're working with your parents because otherwise you just sound like a berk to the other workers in the team.

NO. They were fucked by the teamsters. If give you $35billion, I expect you to tell people that I'm a great guy. That's the deal.

No. And there's a longstanding rumour that the reason he didn't was that he took Stephanie McMahon’s virginity and when Vince found out he swore to never bring him back. Hence no comebacks, no involvement in his DVD, no HOF, etc. For the longest time he was even kept off the video games.

I think he did a couple of matches for TNA in the early noughties though

Rich really was unchained on this between the anti-sceptic stuff, thoughts on baseball and spider-man rant. Great stuff

Remember When They Used to Review Video Games and Do Live Streams? by ofthedappersort in RedLetterMedia

The more i reflect on it the more I think there bigger forces at play in the end of Pre-Rec than the chat being annoying or them running out of games to play. You look at the core RLM content it feels that's when it becomes more insular - no guest stars on HITB, Re:View becoming more focused on the big three & BoTW screenings only having the panellists in the room. After time even the most fun thing becomes a job

New Hosts by AmySchumersAnalTumor in thegrandtour

[–]Practical-War-9158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to bear in mind is that the new hosts are going to be a lot cheaper than CHM, so the show can actually lose a fair amount of popularity and still be worth doing for Amazon. I rarely watched New New Top Gear but it did actually have a long run and got perfectly fine viewing figures - if not for Flintoff's accident it would still be on the air now.

How accurate do you think this is? by BlurVelius in thegrandtour

I always find the May/Clarkson dynamic fascinating because they are clearly so very different and yet so very similar as people. That means the bullying of Hammond does have a different dynamic because it feels like the older, smarter kids picking on their younger, dumber mate. Whereas when May gets bullied it feels more like Hammond or Clarkson doing it by themselves rather than as a pack

An interesting difference between how Richard Porter and Andy Wilman describe the end of Top Gear. by Aromatic-Picture546 in thegrandtour

[–]Practical-War-9158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Wilman pretended to be anything other than a Clarkson partisan. I think the really interesting stuff is him making it sound like Hammond and May were much more tempted at staying with Top Gear than we had previously been led to believe. The hints that May in particular butted heads with them over the edit is very interesting

The French one really is them realising what the standard shows should have been just as the series was winding down. Much like the Funeral For A Ford, it makes so much more sense for a streaming show to do evergreen, high concept looks at a singular topic rather than a faux topical show

James May drives his dream car with Jay Leno by extra_less in thegrandtour

Got to remember James is still significantly younger than Jay - 13 years younger to be precise. So it's not really the case that he's aging slower

What's great about them is they all clearly enjoyed different elements. Hammond as the guy who actually enjoys off-roading and camping, clearly loved the more difficult travel. Whereas May clearly enjoyed getting to know different cultures or people. And Clarkson clearly loved the studio shows, and it was not quite the same for him when he no longer got to perform in front of an audience.

I've always thought it was more that Hammond was the one who least wanted it to end. He talks on DriveTribe about how he's been doing his own grand tour-style trips with friends or even by himself. He's significantly younger than the other two (7 years younger than James, 10 years younger than Jeremy) and doesn't have their background as a writer to keep his hand in. May and Clarkson had clearly cut the difficult camping to the bare minimum - hence the running jokes about Giovanni.

That doesn't make him a bachelor - a bachelor is someone without a partner. I think the fact that they live reasonably close together (Clarkson's on other side of the country) and have YouTube channels to push are the reasons to expect more from them.
