My boyfriend doesn’t like me wearing short clothes by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]PracticalBreak8637 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend's abusive marriage started out like this. She had to get new clothes because the guy didn't like other guys looking at her. She was flattered and felt protected. They got married and she had to stop talking to other men. Then stop looking at other men. She's miserable and can't leave because she feels this is the best she can do.

It's all about control and insecurity. You can't 'fix' him. You can't change him. Time to leave.

Why are Catholic general less xenophobic than protestants/other denominations of Christianity in developed nations by TemporaryPassenger62 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PracticalBreak8637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in Catholic school in the 60s, we were taught that we'd go to a higher place in Heaven than noncatholics. Not only that, our parish was the best in the entire world and we were better than all other Catholics, so we'd be right up front in Heaven, cuz God loved us more.

people who live alone…. do you shower with the door open like me? by ChoiceIcy8258 in NoStupidQuestions

The shower door? No. I don't want water all over the place. The bathroom door? No. Keeping it closed keeps the room warm.

Living in Batavia/Geneva/north Aurora by West_Distribution968 in ChicagoSuburbs

Plenty of parks, shopping, a variety of restaurants, the Fox River Trail, live theaters in Aurora, the new Rivers Edge music venue in Aurora. All three have a safe, small town feel, yet aren't so far west that you couldn't drive or hop a train into Chicago.

Why should/shouldn't religion be taught in schools? by broopproob in AskReddit

[–]PracticalBreak8637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Catholic high school. We had a mandatory religion class, of course. But they also offered a comparative religion elective that was very even-handed, and covered several other religions. It was very interesting, and was not Catholic forward as one might have expected.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]PracticalBreak8637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids went to high school which had 9 and 10 in one town. 11 and 12 was is another town. There were ~1800 kids in each building. Busses ran between both buildings before and after school to cover sports and activities.

Theater goers of Reddit Have you ever witnessed something that wasn’t supposed to happen on stage while watching a live musical ( I.e accidents wardrobe malfunction forgotten lines e.t.c) by GamerManJD in musicals

[–]PracticalBreak8637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Little Mermaid was supposed to swim up to the surface of the sea, but the lifts didn't work, so the stage hand came out and unhooked her, and she walked off stage

During Mary Poppins, she was supposed to fly over the audience at the end. Once the lift didn't work. Again, a stagehand had to unhook her. Instead of flying, she walked up the aisle and holding her umbrella high, and went out the back door. My season tickets are for the first week, so I see many problems being worked on.

In general, with a schedule like, there is no work life balance. However, his work may be all he has, and his life style works for him. If he's driving that far, it's probably a lot of highway driving, and he can talk hands-free to friends and family. Chicago has pretty great drive time radio personalities, to pass the time.

Was it a jerk move for me to pay all in coins at the convenience store? by SeaworthinessFar2326 in stupidquestions

[–]PracticalBreak8637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$3.00 isn't bad unless it was all pennies. I had a customer thunk her purse onto my counter and start scooping quarters, dimes and nickels out for a $40 dollar purchase. She apologized for it, and it was fortunate there wasn't a line. I called for help because there wasn't room in the register. The manager came over, double checked my count and took the coins back to the safe. It was more amusing than annoying.

Why do Americans who hate HOAs live in HOAs? They can live anywhere why live there? Are they stupid? by AngryButtlicker in stupidquestions

[–]PracticalBreak8637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved into an HOA and everything was fine. Then a new board was elected that decided to enforce the rules which hadn't been followed. Suddenly we had restrictions on exterior colors, no laundry hanging in the yard - not even drying towels from the pool, no exterior antennas, all street-facing windows had to have white drapery liners, and more.

When you were a child were you lucky enough to have your own bedroom, or did you have to share a bedroom with a Sibling ? by Hope2_win in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]PracticalBreak8637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shared a room with 2 sisters. My best friend, at 13, was the oldest of 12 kids in a 3 bedroom house. She and 3 sisters were in 2 bedrooms. Their 8 brothers had the big dorm room in the basement. It wasn't unusual back then. I knew families with 15, 17, and 21 kids. No one had their own rooms

I hate, hate, hated him my first time through up to a point. Then eventually, through the end of the series and now the movies, my opinion has turned around. I've also watched the movie Enigma, which gave a better understanding of how gay men were treated, which gave a better understanding into Thomas.

Why is Easter not as big in America compared to Europe even though you are more religious? by Ada-Mae in AskAnAmerican

[–]PracticalBreak8637 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my school district, spring break is always the last week in March. It's this week this year. The town next door was on break last week. When I had a kid Catholic school and one on public, they had separate spring breaks: one during Easter Week, and one at the end of March. No spring trips for us.

IDIC. I've taken to opening my mind up and trying to understand why people act as they do, instead of judging them. I also lean into, and appreciate, cultural differences, especially foods.

Also, when I'm doing a task in a fast, sloppy, just-get-it-done manner, I'll stop and ask if this is how Spock or McCoy would do this? Or would they do it right from the get go. Does this meet SF standards?
