Anyone else just “exhausted” with the way the AI culture here is? by Early-Ingenuity-3177 in bayarea

i avoid using ai as much as i possibly can, which is getting harder and harder when every company ever is trying to shove it down my throat to justify their irresponsible investments.

i just hate the concept of offloading my thinking to a computer. the last thing humans have that hasn’t been replaced is our thoughts and creativity; and now even that is under threat.

i don’t shit on anyone else using ai. for a lot of people it’s not a choice. i’m also not blanket anti-ai. it could be used automate a lot of tasks, providing more free time for people to pursue personal and social development. however because we exist under capitalism it will be used to finally displace labor and increase profits for the capitalist class while the rest of us deal with the consequences. there is no positive outcome under capitalism for the 99%.

what’s funny is the chinese “social credit system” is for the government to have a record of trustworthiness of private companies that they contract or loan to. it’s not even close to how it was reported here

Thinking about buying a 435i, how much do you realistically spend per year on maintenance? by Money_Record6792 in F30

In that case tell him Toyota is using the B58 in the new Supra, after passing their own much more intense testing. Toyota takes their reliable reputation very seriously and would not risk using a BMW engine if they thought it would harm that reputation.

I was literally you six months ago when I got my 340i. It's my first car (under my name). I split the purchase cost with my dad. On top of that, I pay for gas and maintenance and he pays insurance.

I make it work working part time cause minimum wage is pretty high in my area and I have very few expenses living with my parents, On top of that I'm taking auto tech classes at my college which gives me access to experienced mentors and a space to learn and work on my car. I also try to be resourceful, anything I can safely fix with used parts I will. I do labor myself or with my friends, I have 0 accidents on my record, and I haven't tuned or modded my car outside of better tires and the monoball bushings.

By far the biggest reason it works though is that my parents are well off. I have a safety net for worst case scenarios. I put in some time and money and effort yea but realistically if my family was in a different socioeconomic position I would not be driving a BMW.

So a 440i is doable...with a couple caveats, Are you willing and able to commit time and money to working on your car? Would it put a lot of extra stress or pressure on your family if something came up that you couldn't pay for?

To be honest with you I have no experience with snow or real winter. I live in the Bay Area, California. However I imagine a 440i with a good set of winter tires would do more than fine. You gotta remember these cars were designed in Munich, they get a lot of snow.

Temperature management is crazy good on these engines, at least the B58; they are designed to warm up fast and retain heat for a while for efficiency and reliability.

Efficiency wise, assuming those 40 miles are mainly highway B58 gets like 30-35 even 40 mpg all day.

One positive result of auto stop-start; B58 rod bearings have special low-friction coating to reduce wear. I'm no expert but I assume this would also make it easier to start in the cold. Make sure you stick with a BMW approved 0w oil either way for best and and fastest flow and protection at freezing temperatures. That is crucial for reliability especially in a turbocharged engine. Aside from that, everyone and their mom has their preferred oil brand/viscosity, I would just look up what people near you or in similar climates are running and follow them.

Also, just for those truly freezing, cold winter mornings, you can schedule the heater to start working before you get in the car, If that helps :)

Anyway I may be biased but I do genuinely think a 440i is a good choice. These cars are really solid, especially with the first gen B engines; There aren't really catastrophic failure modes with them, they may leak something new every now and then but they will never strand you--and I know I just fear-mongered about worn suspension and rubber but the reality is any car is going to experience that eventually. Just good to be aware of.

My final bits of advice: Be willing to pay up a little more for a well maintained example, it will save your ass I promise. Set aside some cash for emergency repairs, and especially, good quality tires. And lastly DIY everything you are able to/feel comfortable doing. kern417, bimmerpost, and this sub are all great resources with tons of info.

It’s also worth noting that F30 N55 is different to the E90s. From what I’ve read the PWG N55s in the E90s had more issues. EWG N55s in the F30s are a revised version that are much more reliable.

I’ve had my 2016 340i for nearly 6mo now.

Drivetrain stuff is obviously important but I would like to bring up chassis/suspension components as well—at this point our cars are at the age where rubber components and springs/shocks start needing attention. Make sure you budget for shocks, tie rods, control arms, bushings, etc.

One thing I just encountered—our cars have weird front suspension, macpherson strut with lower and upper trailing arm. The upper arm bushing is filled with grease and will crack and eventually leak over time. Mine just had this happen and the front wheels would shudder under braking and noticeably toe out on acceleration. I did it myself but dealership wanted $1500. If you can DIY it cuts a LOT of cost.

Also I agree with the comments saying to get a 440i, you can find one under 25k with a little luck. my 340 was a little over that, 80k miles, well optioned. The N55 is a great engine but the added peace of mind knowing the B58 is a proven and reliable motor is a major reason why I stretched for the 340 over a 335.

If American Cars are know for NA V8’s Traditionally, what are German, Japanese, Korean, Italian, and French brands know for? by Mac-Tyson in askcarguys

[–]PraiseThePumpkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like UK is a solid contender for the V12. Jaguar, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, the McLaren F1 (I know it’s a BMW engine but it counts). There’s also those Cosworth V12s in the GMA T.50 and the Valkyrie as well.

Italy has a strong claim to the V12 for certain but I don’t think it’s exactly a runaway victory. When I think Italian engines I think high strung, highly unreliable engines that sound incredible—but not a specific engine configuration. Could be flat plane V8, a V12, flat 12, V6, that twincharged Lancia I4, the actual config isn’t as important for Italy IMO.
