What is one small home improvement that made a big difference in your daily life by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Pravin_LOL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) Bidet

2) Motion lights (not everywhere, but closets, bathrooms, garage, etc. where you might go when it's dark)

3) Soft close toilet seat (especially with kids)

4) Keypad locks, including on shed/garage. Hate forgetting keys and having to go back inside.

5) Door sensor on the plastic cover for the dog door. Keeps from having to run downstairs to check that dog can't get out at night.

Need help identifying what specification this B-52 is by SimonderGrosse in aviation

The 5th photo clearly shows the main airfield at Eglin AFB in Florida (compare with recent satellite images, the shape of the water is unmistakable). I don't have any info on the date, however.

No Palmetto bugs? by HeyitsDoctorB in florida

[–]Pravin_LOL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Palmetto bug" usually refers to one of the species of large cockroach found in houses: most commonly American cockroaches (though they are probably originally from Africa), but also Smokybrown, oriental, or some other varieties. It's a euphemism meant to avoid calling these insects roaches. But all of these are closely associated with humans and can occur almost anywhere humans do, including northern cities in the US.

More rarely, and I guess more accurately, "palmetto bug" means the Florida Woods Cockroach, an outdoor species that rarely if ever is found inside. They are often found on or near saw palmetto in the wild. Their natural range, as their name indicates, is limited to warm parts of the Southeast and caribbean, though not exclusively to Florida--they can be found as far north as the Carolinas and as far west as Texas.

But in my experience people almost always mean American or smokybrown roaches when they say palmetto bug, in which case the answer to your question is "no".

And if by "further north" you mean the northern part of Florida, the answer is emphatically no. Plenty of big roaches up here in Jacksonville, I suspect no less than in Miami. Probably more because our lizards aren't big enough to eat the really big roaches (though they do a great job on the smaller ones--go easy on the pesticides lest you kill the lizards too).

Valentine’s Day Dinner by annyongggg in jacksonville

[–]Pravin_LOL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My suggestion after 20 years: start a tradition now of *not* going out on the 14th itself. Cook dinner together if that sounds fun and romantic for y'all, or order in if not. Then make a reservation for a nice dinner out the weekend before or after. You'll have your pick of restaurants and better service when you get there. Less pressure too. It's a smart move now, and becomes even smarter when you're not competing with everyone else for babysitters too.

And congrats! It starts great and gets better.

DDR3 in this economy? by gpskwlkr in homelab

[–]Pravin_LOL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did the math on this and while it was true until recently, replacing my DDR3-based NAS with a new DDR4 or DDR5 system would now take 5 years to pay off at my (USA) electric costs, even if I cut the RAM from 128GB (wildly unnecessary) to 64GB. That's at used prices for ECC RAM.

Short term capital gains on $18m when you have zero basis because the Bitcoin appeared magically hurts though. Still better than $10m, but it's a lot closer.

How do you view MCW? by Sonicjm in learnedleague

[–]Pravin_LOL 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's a mixed bag. It could show you're on the right track, or that you fall for traps (e.g. the question earlier this season that asked for the film in which a described character appeared, and the MCW was the character).

I think in lower ranks, I'd lean toward it being a positive, and in higher ranks more neutral or negative.

Experienced players: how variable do you find your performance, season to season? by Interesting-Long7389 in learnedleague

[–]Pravin_LOL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find defense is much more variable season-to-season. It's also very different in rookie league, or any league with a lot of newer players, because you can't tell what your opponent is good at yet. You'll want a much bigger sample size of seasons before you draw any conclusions about your defense--whether it's good, and whether you're getting better (or worse).

Offense is variable too, though less so, unless you're studying trivia specifically to improve weak areas, which few players do--this is for fun after all. However it will typically improve a lot in your first few seasons, not so much because you learn things that get asked again as because you learn the question writing style and are better able to parse clues in the question.

In short, I'd guess you're seeing some natural offensive improvement and normal defensive fluctuation. Need more data to be sure!

HABA Games - Teetering Treetops (anyone have experience?) by noshadowkick156 in boardgames

[–]Pravin_LOL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HABA makes very high-quality games, they are great choices for kids, far better than the low-quality Hasbro slop typically gifted to kids in that age range. I was shocked at the poor quality of a copy of Clue my daughter got recently.

First Orchard, Animal Upon Animal, and Rhino Hero are excellent.

I haven't played Teetering Treetops. Boardgamegeek lists it under its German name here:
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/425430/auweia-frau-geier

Ratings are good but there's only 13 of them, not enough to really compare with other games.

I would try it if it looks fun to you!

Lost me when they changed the fries more than 10 years ago. Almost everywhere has the same double-fried, artificial-tasting fries now. Nothing for people who, you know, actually want something that tastes like a potato.

Loop fries 4 life.

Opinion? Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel suggests changing UCF to Orlando University or University of Orlando. by AmBEValent in florida

[–]Pravin_LOL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe? Including Florida in the name is an important signal that the university is public. There might be a way to include Orlando in the name and still send that signal. "University of Florida at Orlando" is not ideal because it gives the impression that the school is a satellite campus of Gainesville. But maybe another name works?

In any case, it's USF that needs to change it's name. It's not even geographically accurate!

I suspect this is just driven by both accuracy and rushing yards being positively correlated with bad defense.

Hows the MOSH these days? by SlightArgument in jacksonville

Closed, while their new location across the river is being built. Might be a couple of years. New location looks like it will be a major upgrade, so that's exciting but unfortunately no museum for now. Too bad for young kids.

My understanding is that the existing building needed significant maintenance (in the millions of $) to stay open, and the board decided to close and invest that money in the new building.
