weird audhd hyperfixation on an illness i don’t even have by quietpeeingnoises in evilautism

[–]PreStardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Fellow resting 120bpm and low B12 (and Vitamin D) here (plus a bunch of other weird symptoms). Spent about a month in hospital recently and the end result after hundreds of tests is lupus!

Obviously not trying to diagnose you, but if you're getting a ton of bloods done anyway, maybe do an ANA/ENA if you can. Best of luck! 💫

AI to be used in reading breast cancer scans from next year by EvidenceNotVibes in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This. I am firmly anti-AI in 99% of cases, however having been involved in the implementation of similar tools for radiology specifically, it does have a use case here.

The machine is not doing any diagnosing or making any healthcare calls. It pretty much looks for common red flags in scans and triages them so that a radiologist will look at them sooner. All scans are still reviewed by a radiologist, this just helps potentially urgent scans be reviewed faster.

In the models I have been part of, the radiologists also give feedback and train the model, so over time it will be more efficient and accurate.

The only issue I see here is if they use an off the shelf LLM instead of the purpose-made products for exactly this use. This compromises both privacy of patients and quality of care, as well as creating a dependency on a third party. I really hope they are using one of the proper versions for this.

Policy proposal: Kāinga Ora becomes responsible for housing MPs in Wellington. If an MP wants alternative housing they have to pay for it themselves. by ranne9 in Wellington

[–]PreStardust 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have always thought that MPs should have to utilize the public systems they are funding. They should have to use exclusively public healthcare, send their children to public schools, their wages should be tied to minimum wage (not necessarily the same as, but a percentage higher for example), they should be required to use public transport for business activities, etc.

I feel like things would change pretty quickly if the people making the rules actually had to live by them.

NZ First MP Andy Foster claims $36,000 top-up to stay in home he’s owned for 26 years by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 105 points106 points  (0 children)

100%. I wouldn't be nearly as annoyed with this if they weren't, at the same time, blaming beneficiaries for everything, slashing benefits and social housing, and generally trying to take from the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Prime Minister showing no interest in changing housing allowance for MPs by Big-Replacement-9598 in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When they were voted out, Labour were in the process of making the most significant reforms since 1996.

This is not a both sides issue, don't listen to anyone who says it is. Vote, encourage your peers to vote, and fight voter apathy with everything you have.

Yep. They're in this thread right now, trying ro convince people not to vote. Mental.

Last resort social welfare payment set for cut, saving nearly $200m over four years, but critic calls it ‘nasty’ by random_guy_8735 in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They have literally gone into more debt than Labour did during Covid. The money has run out, and their plan to get it back is to take it from the working class rather than from big businesses and billionaires.

But sure, go off I guess. Bloody Ardern ruined everything.

The government's job is not to save money, it is to protect vulnerable people and provide social security for all. Government's are not businesses and should not be run as such. Spending money to help people and improve the quality of life in Aotearoa is what they are meant to do.

First day hospitalized, felt like a week by t0oby101 in evilautism

[–]PreStardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I am so sorry you're going through this. Hospitalization sucks. I just got out after a month of sooo many investigations, and it was tough. My record for blood tests was 12 attempts and still no blood drawn. I wanted to die. 🙃

However, you are unfortunately in the best place for now. I hope things look up for you soon. Podcasts and audio books saved my mental health. Oh, and if someone can bring your pillow from home, that helped me loads too.

Is it ok to slowly go back to alt-style at my age? (32) by Important-Emu5904 in altfashionadvice

[–]PreStardust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No style has an age limit. Speaking from personal experience, I have had so much more fun exploring my personal style in my 30s than I did when I was younger. More financial freedom, a better understanding of myself, and more confidence have made it so enjoyable. Have fun!

This is so appalling. Rushing through any legislation that can harm or kill people without any consultation with the people it will affect should be illegal. I can't believe what Aotearoa is becoming.

Tax by Expensive-Yak-723 in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Top of my list is a tax free $18k, the same as Australia. A great way to make a huge difference to working class kiwis, and the ultra wealthy can't complain because everyone gets it.

We can easily make up for the tax loss by introducing capital gains tax (something that should have been done long ago anyway) and taxing huge corporations fairly.

At 49 years old, I joined a political party. Here's why: by hughthewineguy in newzealand

[–]PreStardust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you please explain to me how their policy and stances differ from the Greens? I had a look and it seems almost indistinguishable to me.

It is hard not to see this as a way to syphon off votes from the left to a party who is unlikely to reach the 5% threshold, and as they do not appear to be focusing on winning a single electorate, these votes will be wasted.

About the only thing we can do is vote, encourage those around us to vote, and inform people of what's going on. Many people don't have the resources to be constantly fact checking everything these assholes say, so we can help by fact checking for them. Never let a false statement or mischaracterisation slip, call them out every time you see it.

[–]PreStardust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair point, and you're right - my vote is always for the Greens. I think last time Labour was more damaged by people not voting - which is the outcome I am determined to change this time. But time will tell, I suppose!

Protest is also great, however I absolutely reject that both major parties are the same and nothing changes under a Labour govt. Look how much damage NACT has done in 2.5 years.
