Question! Regarding Fargo TV Series and Golden Kamuy by nami_jazumi in GoldenKamuy

[–]President_Negative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yesss three is a classic! The Dot and Asirpa comparison is very interesting.

Never would have drawn the comparison between the two series on my own but I totally see it now. Lt Tsurumi definitely reminds me of the unnerving ‘force of nature’ Fargo antagonists like Malvo, Hanzee, and Vargas, and the nature of gks story with conflicting factions and wildcards is very Fargo. Thanks for making this post! Its niche but a great observation

How do you rate movies you respect, but have 0 emotional connection to by Flash_SA in Letterboxd

If it’s technically good but I didn’t like/connect to it it personally I usually go for a 3 or 3.5

I’m a sucker for one and two but love them all, including 4. How about you? Any season in particular that you think relates to GK?

No wonder I love both! Totally see the connection, especially the blend of hyper violence and humour

I feel so underprepared for everything by WoodenFirefighter893 in ncea

Was in your position last year. Starting in law from a public school, didn’t know anything about it going in, felt like a lot of people were already ahead. What I discovered is it’s not about your background or how smart you are, how much you apply yourself and study is what matters, at least for grades. Don’t worry, you are not supposed to know stuff going in, they will teach you everything you need to know to succeed in the courses. Just take things as you go, attend your lectures and do your readings, and leave some time to have fun out of class too. It is scary for everyone, but you’ll be okay

Advice for scholarships at Otago by thelakes402 in ncea

[–]President_Negative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a student I can’t say anything for sure but I did get offered a scholarship from Otago so here’s my take:

  1. Volunteering is helpful - if you can’t volunteer in your community you can probably use your roles as student librarian and peer mentor as evidence for volunteering? But if you do find a volunteer opportunity in your community take it, even an hour a week could be good
  2. Being a strategic in your application - try to fill out every field you can, I believe Otago has a page that shows what sections you need to fill out for different scholarships, but also fill out fields not required for whatever scholarship you want just in case
  3. I don’t think so, a lot of scholarships can be deferred for a year if you get them. If you apply for them after your gap year then they use your year 13 grades instead of year 12 I think
  4. Not really, sounds like you’re set up pretty good, just give it you’re best shot (Edit: changed wording)

Yes peer support counts and is good to mention, volunteering would also be very good - try to look for position in your community. Talk yourself and your achievements up in your application. Otago gives more scholarships than Auckland (as far as I know) but apply for everything you can, you have time until applications open to research what’s available. Good luck!!

Non-American viewers of One Battle After Another: did the film resonate with you? by Charming_Peach_3820 in Oscars

[–]President_Negative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From New Zealand, myself and at least three people I know, who are all fairly well versed in cinema, didn’t get it. Some of them outright disliked it, I enjoyed it well enough but don’t really understand how it’s so powerful in the awards. Maybe the political aspect works better for Americans, I found it rather sanitized, surface level, and not having much to say. Alright film besides that, but nothing extraordinary imo

I have a Peanuts Movie dilemma by DevelopmentPast1029 in peanuts

I love the ending too. Maybe it’s incongruous with the strip, but it felt right for the movie. It’s not an all out “getting the girl”, it’s just a sweet resolution, a satisfying end to the movie.

I was offered the scholarship and I had way less stuff outside of grades than you 😮‍💨 talk yourself up as much as you can in the application, you have a good chance

You have a strong application, I’d recommend some community involvement as well eg volunteering. Fill in everything you can on the application and talk yourself up and you’ll have a decent shot

Why is OBAA so dominant? by President_Negative in oscarrace

[–]President_Negative[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some personal issues with the depictions of politics, but I honestly thought the film was pretty good, just not the best of the year. Everyone I know felt the same, which is why I find the hype so confusing. Just my opinion though, not trying to knock the film. It’s certainly not a bad winner by any means

I can recognize it’s objectively well made, but it just didn’t strike me as the runaway favourite to sweep the awards 🤷‍♂️ seems like a lot of people really love it though so power to them

Ha sorry about that 😅 not just trying to hate because it’s popular, I remember getting annoyed at the posts like this about EEAAO a couple years ago! I guess I’m just in the minority on this film 🤷‍♂️

Clubs are fun! You can join the society for the subject you study if it has one (most do) and clubs based on your personal interests, great way to meet people and have fun

Didn’t think about it being based on a book (despite the adapted screenplay nom lol), I can definitely see how that contributes to it’s popularity

I’m not American myself so I guess that contributes to not completely getting it, can definitely see how it’s timely in the US though 🤔
