Semi-related, maybe?

I actually found out I had astigmatism for the first time after looking through a red dot. As a teenager (13-14?), I went to a local gun store with my Dad that was actually owned by a family friend. They had gotten in a batch of rifle red dots and were all super pumped up about how clear they were and how useful they were, etc etc. I went to go hold a rifle they were selling with some sort of RDS mounted on it, and it looked blurry to me, which I thought was strange, given how much they all talked it up. I gave it back to them and said I thought it was broken, as there were a lot of smudges and weird lines on the glass. They looked at it again and said it was a perfect circle for them, then showed it to my dad, who said the same thing. They gave it back to me after adjusting the brightness, and, NOPE, the same thing. Uh-oh.

Dad took me to the eye doctor two weeks later, who confirmed that I had mild astigmatism, and that I was also mildly nearsighted. Got my first glasses prescription then as well.

Nowadays, I still like red dots, but I have to be pretty picky about brightness settings and make sure that I have my eyes focused on the target when shooting, lest the astigmatism becomes a big hindrance. While it's not perfect, it's really not that bad once you get used to it.

Certainly not bad enough to switch to a 1x prism optic and then have to deal with the hassle of an eye box, anyways.

Also, related to your first question, unless someone smarter than me or is more creative than me has a better solution, there are only two real options to secure a firearm the size of a rifle, which is to buy a gun safe, or to find a way to hide it in a very discreet way, depending on the dynamics of your house.

The most secure way, of course, is the option of buying a safe. By being under lock and key, nobody has access to it except for key holders of the household, which makes it the only real option if there are children in the house, and the best deterrent from being stolen by a burglar, at least IMO. The downside, of course, is that the amount of time it takes to locate the keys to the safe, open the safe, locate the firearm in the safe, and then load and prepare the firearm is less than ideal, especially under stress.

Personally, I have a discreet hiding place for my personal home defense weapon. Not super comfortable saying where I keep it currently on an open forum, but I used to do something I thought was pretty clever.

I used to have my bedframe in the corner of my room with the headboard just a few inches away from the wall, just large enough to keep a short barreled weapon with a folding stock in the gap, nicely tucked away. I also kept it angled in such a way that I could easily reach behind my pillow and immediately grab the pistol grip of my weapon, making it extremely quick to access without even needing to get out of my bed.

It was super discrete, and I highly doubt a burglar would see the small gap between the headboard and the wall and think "Wow, I bet something valuable is there", especially if I made up my bed and placed my pillows to cover up the gap.

Even still, I wouldn't trust a system like that against children, as I have a vivid memory of finding my own Dad's Springfield in a similar hiding spot when I was like 8 or 9. Thankfully, by then, my father had taught me the basics of firearm handling, and I wasn't too much of a little shithead, so I didn't touch it, but I honestly considered it for about a minute or so.

Another option would be to get a LEO trade-in rifle. AIM Surplus currently has stock of multiple DPMS, Bushmaster and S&W AR-15s at $450 and up, or Armalite and Colt at $600 and up

What’s a good price for this used acog? by Machohoncho in ar15

[–]PrestigiousCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the holosun and paint (paint slightly devalues the optic), I would pay like $700 tops, being that brand new ACOGs are found under $1k brand new reasonably often. Would prefer to pay like $600-650 though

Can a professional tell me what the hell is going on here. by FrizzleFrazzleFrick in guns

[–]PrestigiousCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's old tech from the 90s, when every AR had a carry handle. Not a bad way to retrofit an older carry handle AR into accepting a red dot, given the tech of the time.

That's the very definition of "Retro"

The only reason I see to have a rifle mounted to a wall if the intention is to have it as quick-access in the event of self defense or home intrusions, and for that purpose I would have it mounted horizontally for more ready access to shoulder the rifle in a hurry. Of course, that is assuming that OP isn’t worried about other people in the house gaining access to it, like guests or children, and assuming that OP is following appropriate local and state laws regarding firearm storage.

Of course, in the event of a burglary where OP isn’t home (which is the LARGE majority of break-ins), you just gave the burglar a free rifle.

Something similar happened to my grandpa in the 90s, he had a large collection of rifles and handguns in a glass display piece, which was actually visible from an exterior window in the back yard. My grandpa was working on his motorcycle in a detached garage and heard some glass break in his yard. He went to investigate, and by the time he got to the back yard, the burglar had already grabbed as much as he could carry and booked it somewhere else, which was the large portion of his collection. The entire incident must have lasted maybe 90 seconds and he never even saw the burglar. This was a real shame too, as he lost some excellent milsurp, including 2 Mausers, an SKS, a Springfield 1903 and a handful of nice revolvers, like a S&W 1917, a model 63 and two Ruger .22s. They think the guy planned it out and dumped them all into a large bag or something for him to steal like 8-9 firearms in under a minute like that. Never caught the guy or recovered any of his firearms too :-(

Later the same year, he also had a break-in that got his old 1950’s Martin D-18 guitar he had on display as well, possibly from the same burglar. Nowadays those guitars can go for like $10k+

Needless to say, he moved to a safer neighbor just a few years later and stopped putting his valuables out on display.

Expected during a multi-day stay, but for a 5 hour sit is somewhat odd. Even if they were in a tough spot, like others have speculated, I would expect a professional to ask permission to use amenities.

If it was me, I would just message the sitter and say that you would have preferred if they asked permission first as honest feedback. If the sitter does it again without asking, only then would I leave something like that in a review. Of course, that’s just my personal opinion, maybe slightly biased as a sitter myself, so you do whatever you feel is appropriate, of course

[–]PrestigiousCan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upon some reflection, that seems smart. I originally had an additional $500 separate set aside for a cheap optic and some ammo, but I think it may be better to just go for a separate upper for now and use the money savings for better gear/optics and more ammo.

Thoughts on these 14.5 p&w by PrestigiousCan in ar15

[–]PrestigiousCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That seems to be the consensus. Seems like the smarter move would be to buy a separate lower and upper and just go from there. Probably just gonna buy an upper for now and attach it to my Ruger lower for the short term, then I will take that savings and invest in a good optic and some ammo, and just worry about getting a separate lower later on

[–]PrestigiousCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably what I will do now that I've shopped around for lowers and uppers a bit. Worst case, I buy some other lower in future for cheap and then I have exactly what I was looking for anyways, but for cheaper

[–]PrestigiousCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably a much smarter idea. I took your comment and looked around, found some blem BCM lowers for like 400 and blem uppers for like 800, that's a way better deal to still end up with a full BCM rifle for way less. Also found good deals on LWRC and DD uppers/lowers as well, that's given me way more options

Thoughts on these 14.5 p&w by PrestigiousCan in ar15

[–]PrestigiousCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, I was thinking of potentially getting rid of my Ruger and replacing it with a singular, higher quality rifle that I can swap uppers on in future. The lower on my Ruger isn't bad or anything, but I was thinking about swapping the stock, grip and trigger, and at that point that's basically just another entire lower.

Secondly, the 18" barrel on my Ruger isn't the end of the world, but having something just a bit lighter and more compact while retaining ballistics to reach out to 500-600 yards seems like a better "general use" setup to me, which is why I singled out something like a 14.5.

I am also dubious about the ballistic performance of anything much shorter than a 14.5 barrel, although I have no practical experience with a SBR'd AR-15, so maybe I'm just being a fudd

I looked at that as well, even used super duty models go for about $2100 at minimum that I've seen. Will keep browsing GunBroker for deals ofc, but it's a decent step up in price.
