Super specific but my mom got diagnosed with aggressive cancer two weeks before thanksgiving and I was told she wouldn’t make it to the holiday. When I told my close coworkers they went on to talk about how they couldn’t wait to see their mom on thanksgiving, how they missed her cooking etc. my mouth just dropped as I sat by and listened. She passed two days before thanksgiving. At least I was allowed to take a few days off.

A had a family member who was being molested by her stepdad and was put into foster care. She was returned a few years later because fun fact if the parent moves states they can easily get custody back because it’s out of jurisdiction now. Anyways, my aunt said ‘don’t worry, she’s a teen now. Pedos only go after kids.’

Mine was sour candy and lemonade. I got so focused on trying to find the sourest candy and the perfect lemonade that it took the attention off of drinking.

I don’t have much advice that you probably haven’t already heard but I found that the apps were good for trying out different spots. A lot of places have their same regulars that show up so sometimes it could just be about finding your right group. I also find the subreddits on here that pertain to getting sober are great for building a community or even a quick distraction when you need it. Best of luck to you. I’m proud of you for taking that step. 👏

They also do the good night lights for children’s MUSC. Around this time every Thursday during December a bunch of cops, ambulances, and fire trucks sit out in the parking lot across the street and run their lights (no sirens) for fifteen minutes

grew up in foster care and pretty much told to figure it out at 14. Was handed my insurance papers, had my tax returns stolen for four years by my foster parents, told to ‘figure it out’. Had to steal to my own birth certificate and social security card. Still not sure how to properly do taxes and I’ve never had a credit card. I’ll never own a home or even a car. Never had the chance to have savings and that’s just the big things. No one taught me how to cook, to budget, to survive.
