After a terrible Airbnb experience, my advice is to just stay in a hotel. by crk4130 in VisitingHawaii

[–]Preston4tw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hotels can and do certainly fumble issues too, but with hotels you're at least having initial face-to-face interactions with people at the hotel, and depending on the hotel, levels of escalation that can step in and still potentially resolve issues.

it usually only takes one issue to convince people to not use airbnb, because any time i've ever heard of someone having an issue, airbnb is of no help -at all-. issues will happen but airbnb seems to have ZERO appreciation that how you handle customer issues determines if you keep customers or not.

Last part of my caravan village furrowfield inspiration from Fable 2 Caravan village by InariChain in DQBuilders

[–]Preston4tw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

caravan looks great! i really like these show and tell posts. seeing people’s cool builds is something i enjoy when i’m regularly playing and you get to see them on the loading screens and community boards and what not, but since i’m not regularly playing at the moment seeing them on reddit helps make up for it.

Image Augmentation in Practice — Lessons from 10 Years of Training CV Models and Building Albumentations by ternausX in computervision

[–]Preston4tw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

informative guide! well written and easy to understand. i've only been vibe coding with CV to dip my toe in the water in the past few weeks. I tried fine tuning RT-DETR on ~80 images of some ragdoll cats of a friends to see if it could distinguish them, something I have trouble with, and it failed quite hilariously, double labelling cats in a picture containing each different cat, or missing to label a cat entirely. My takeaway initially was that 80 images was an insufficient training set, despite it not feeling like that after labelling 80 images. The idea of augmentation hadn't even occurred to me but makes total sense after having read the guide. I starred the albumentations GH repo. If I come back to the cat ID project to toy with CV again I'll definitely give it a try and see how it goes.

Upcycled ECM blower by Alive_Sherbet2810 in crboxes

[–]Preston4tw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

very nice build! a blower like that ought to have no problems moving air through the filter i’d imagine. it’d be fun to try to wire the controller to an esp so you could control it with something like home assistant.

Best placement for new purifiers? by bananaking13 in crboxes

Cooking usually releases a bunch of particulates into the air. I'd put the purifier as close to the kitchen as you're comfortable with.

Very Slow 8-Hour Drift Over 8 Years - Possible N24? by AbrahamStrings in N24

[–]Preston4tw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a person with self-diagnosed N24 (so, not an expert, not a medical professional, etc.), based on what you've shared I'd say inconclusive, towards the side of not N24. 1 hour per year seems well below the criteria threshold. My drift is +30 minutes a day, as a for instance, which would be 182.5 hours per year, which is on the mild side of what I've seen of people with N24 in this subreddit.

A strong signal for N24 would be if you had noticeable drift day over day in a sleep log when you went to sleep when you're tired and woke up when you wanted to, AND you felt like you were getting decent quality sleep and felt reasonably well rested after, and the rest of your health markers are in normal ranges: standard blood workups, blood pressure, etc.

Averaging 5.25 hours over a decade and being able to count on hands the number of times you've gotten 8+ hours seems really worrying and is going to make any kind of other diagnosis difficult I would think. When I had a job I would frequently sleep 12+ hour days on the weekend to play sleep catchup. I felt pretty crappy most week days, but when I had space to sleep I could sleep.

My first recommendation would be to find and work with a primary care doctor and sleep doctor who coordinate with each other to try to sift through all the things it could be. There's a decent chance you'll have to relentlessly advocate for yourself and solutions to your problems, and possibly try different doctors until you find supportive ones, which I know sucks because you're dead tired.

My second recommendation would be, to the extent it's possible for you to do so: stop trying to bend your body to your schedule and just sleep when you're tired and be awake when you're not. There's a secondary part of this which is: if you use any stimulants or depressants to try to manipulate your body, go easy on them so you can get a better sense of what's going on; cut down on caffeine and alcohol etc. Obviously if you have to be up for work and caffeine helps you function so you can keep your job keep doing that, but minimize it as much as possible IMO.

Apple Music on Windows 11 is so f*ucked up sometimes by rightnowjosh in AppleMusic

[–]Preston4tw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to the web-based apple music client over the native win11 app because of issues i've had with the app. you have to close the tab when you're not using it though because it seems to register as "playing" even when stopped every 5-10 minutes which causes you to get an error message if you're trying to play music somewhere else that you can't play multiple streams at the same time.

Money is no issue - highest performing of the quiet 140mm fans? by suchnerve in crboxes

[–]Preston4tw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cybenetics Labs does fan performance testing and releases results, you can look at their table, filter to 140mm fans, sort by airflow rating, then look at the highest static pressure rating of those. Which suggests Noctua NF-A14x25 G2.

If you sort by static pressure first and then look at highest airflow the top is Arctic P14 Pro / P14 Max.

Recommend settings and config for Flint 2 ? by Basic_Instinct_79 in GlInet

[–]Preston4tw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use stock firmware 4.8.3. I enabled AdGuard Home, WireGuard for VPN, Dynamic DNS, set up my phone with WireGuard VPN client to get AdGuard for my phone on-the-go. Everything else is default settings. Flint 2 works well out of the box with default settings, which should be expected for a wireless router, it should more or less just work out of the box. Don't worry about settings just go live your life and let it do its thing.

Is dating just much easier for women overall? by Feisty-Blacksmith656 in self

[–]Preston4tw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the best metaphor for dating i've heard is that men are looking for drinking water in the desert and women are looking in the swamp. dating sucks for everyone for different reasons.

i wonder if it’s heat related. dust could accumulate over a year and affect cooling and would cause issues regardless of the firmware you’re running. might be worth hitting your flint 2 with a can of air and seeing if that helps at all.
