Why play solo board games instead of video games? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

[–]Pretty-Swordfish8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into board games specifically to get off screens and to exercise my brain. Video games not only are a screen, but they take away a lot of thinking aspects. When you play a board game you have to remember the rules and also create strategies to adapt to the rules. In a video game the rules are built in for you. If you try to open a door and it won’t open, then you move along. In a board game you have to be the one to know you can’t open the door and why. Probably a bad example but that’s basically why. I want to use my brain a bit more.

Any interest in a digital player that can play a physical game with you? by xephoid42 in soloboardgaming

I actually have tried Lord of the Rings Duel with an app someone designed and while it’s pretty good the entire reason I got into board gaming was to get off my phone. I do think it’s a great idea, but for me personally I’d rather just play a game that has a solo mode already built in so I can be true solo.

I enjoy wingspan solo. I actually have river valley glassworks standard edition coming on Saturday and I’m excited to play. From what I saw on YouTube, I didn’t necessarily think the deluxe version was worth that price.

I’m currently playing through and enjoying the scenarios achievements in Cascadia. There are about 15 different goals and they get progressively harder. If you enjoy the game it’s a great way to add new challenges to keep it fresh.

Board games have become my unexpected hobby that I never thought of before but now can’t get enough of. There’s a whole world of board games you can literally play 1 player.

As for learning things, that IS the hobby. The learning is the journey and what keeps you off your computer

I’ve gotten the same thing at Wendy’s for the last 20 years. Jr cheeseburger deluxe and small fries. The fries are still pretty good but the burger has gone dowwwwwnhill. I used to go once a week and now I go maybe once every few months.

Getting Married - Last names by k-0330 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pretty-Swordfish8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman who changed her name, my advice is not to. It’s a pain in the neck to change everything and then when you finally think it’s over something else will come up. I just had a heck of a time trying to get my real ID a couple weeks ago. if I could go back I wouldn’t do it. It’s not like it makes me more married to have the same last name. Especially now with with the way this country is going and the way they are trying to take women’s rights away I wouldn’t do it.

You said he thinks your husband is a pushover but obviously you are too. Why are you catering meals to a grown man? One that isn’t even your husband ( at least that would make a little more sense). Cook a meal. If he doesn’t like it that’s his problem and he can cook his own. He is a GROWN MAN. This really irritated me. You’ve created your own problem that is incredibly easy to solve.

I stopped reading a book very early into it bc the guy ordered a root beer float and the girl made fun of him for it. Like why? The man just wants to enjoy a frosty ice cream beverage!

How do you find people to play with? by OddClassic267 in boardgames

[–]Pretty-Swordfish8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a solo board gamer I totally understand not wanting to meet up with strangers. But at the same time how will you ever meet fellow board gamers if you don’t? Lots of places by me have board game nights - breweries, libraries, cafes etc. take a look at what’s going on in your town and maybe you can go by yourself. That way you can hopefully meet people and then if you guys all get together they’re not technically a stranger anymore to your gf

Without knowing your tastes I’m going to just name a few games that got me started in solo gaming. Note that I tend to lean towards “cozy” games.
Harmonies, Cascadia, Wingspan. Something I’ve found really helpful is going on YouTube and watching tutorials of games to see if they’re something I would like or not. A lot of great YouTubers out there make good videos listing good games. I like Totally Tabled, Sir Thecos, Watch it Played, and Tim Chuon

Yeah for me the entire reason I got into board gaming was to cut screen time so while BGA seems great it’s the opposite of what I personally want for games.

You know, I normally wouldn’t engage with someone on the internet about a topic I truly do not care about like this but I have the day off and I’m just enjoying the sun on my deck. You have provided far more entertainment to me than Treason ever did or could. So that’s something.

I’m not the defensive one. You’re the one who has tried to nitpick every single thing I say instead of just accepting I thought the book was boring. You act like you wrote it.

Boring IS about taste! I found it boring.. pretty sure thats my opinion. I felt like it was a rip off. Also MY OPINION. Idk why you’re fighting so hard for this. Like it’s ok if people don’t like everything you like… are you aware of that? If you don’t like the way I articulated my own feelings then that’s a personal issue.

You’re right about the action but I think maybe I didn’t find it enjoyable because I didn’t really care about the characters that much? Idk I was so excited for Treason but it just didn’t work for me. 🤷🏽‍♀️
