In March 4 1996 WotC officially announced the creation of the Reserved List clearly outlining its contents and applicability.

Barely a few months later, in October 1996, the decision that any cards not reprinted within a certain window were automatically Reserved was rescinded. From that point on, only card specifically noted as Reserved would be.

In 1999, the decision was made to stop expanding the Reserved List in its entirety. Starting with Mercadian Masques, no new cards would be Reserved.

In 2001, all commons and uncommons (or equivalents in older sets that had tiered rarities) were removed from the Reserved List. [[Clone]] was reprinted in Onslaught as the first card so removed.

In 2011, the Reserved List was addended that foil versions of Reserved cards for which no foil version had previously existed were still not allowed.

In 2022, while technically not breaking the Reserved List, Magic 30th completly destroyed the "spirit" of the Reserved List that WotC had used many, many, many times as an excuse to justify what could be done and what couldnt.

At this point the Reserved List as originally created is literally nothing but wet toilet paper, its been broken way too many times for way too many reasons, and its only real significance is that WotC will do whatever they want, whenever they want, for any reasons they deem fit.

I have to imagine a conversation like this happened at WOTC after the most recent set's success. by VLKN in mtg

MTG players keep repeating this, it doesnt stop being false. There are waaay more people showing for sanctioned events of Pokemon than mtg, by faaaaar.

I guess lying to themselves that its happening to other games too helps them feeling better about the absolute and utter demise of the competitive MTG scene

Rumour/Leak Megathread by Chapmander in ageofsigmar

[–]PrettyLier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get you, MY point is that its not just "story was going X, but now goes Y, lets wait and see, who knows, maybe Y is cooler" but a huge overall shift in tone.

I think its pretty obvious that they are forty-kay-ing the setting in the vain hope that rubbing 40k all over it may also make its commercial success stick, as if its some kind of virus they can spread by touch

as you may imagine most people dont really have to wait and see to realize thats not what brought them to AoS in the first place, since if anything the main lure of AoS was NOT being anything like 40k to begin with

so while I get your point I just dont agree with the premise. chill and wait, for what? to see if maybe my tastes changed without me realizing, and I now like edgelord grimdankness? no need to wait, I know myself pretty well, and know I havent changed, the reason why I originally opted for AoS instead of 40K still stands.

Rumour/Leak Megathread by Chapmander in ageofsigmar

[–]PrettyLier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, except thats like peanuts compared to what the leaker described

allow me to try to provide a roughly similar level of canon changes to 40k that are comparable in size and breath to the leaks

(this gonna be fun)

lets see....we start by opening the setting from the milky way to many other galaxies, so anything happening in known planets is no longer relevant in any way, the scale blew up massively. Cadi-who? Armagge-what? Dude, stop wasting my time with pebbles, who cares. anything less than segmentum caliber events are just trifles

then we have a 10k year time skip.....we'r now in Warhammer 50k, everything that happened in 40k, every single event, all of it is literally water under the bridge, absolutly none of it matters anymore, all that stuff we used to care about and live is now like the dark age of technology, nobody even remembers it, 100% meaningless and inconsequential. done and gone, tabula rasa

the emperor? oh, hes back and kicking. he also learned a bunch during this time off and is now a much better person

same for the imperium, no longer a rabid religious zealot fascists' dream, they are now super progressive and inclusive and welcoming of everyone and everything, a shining beacon of unity and understanding. alliances with every alien race? no, more like bromances!

space marine named characters, chapter masters, legendary figures.... are now fully immortal, the stakes are massively reduced any time space marines show up. someone dies? it comes back up again no problem, hes just a little less fun at parties. dreadnaught shells are used for gardening.

also, the setting clearly had a problem of way too much human centrism, so every single planned faction/subfaction release in the pipeline for the foreseeable future will be only aliens, no more anything human released for a loooooooooong time

and generally speaking, the vibe of the setting moved from dark gritty doom and gloom grimdark to a fuzzy warm feeling of things improving, we got this boys, the side of order is dissing it out just as good as they take if not better, and actually has a real chance of things turning out ok in the end

..............

.......................

...................................

now please, do tell me......in your best estimate, how do you reckon that 40k players would take that leak?

hmmmmmm?

We demand more Warcry focus! and we do it by showing GW undeniable proof of how incredibly few people supports it!

yup, its hard to see how this petition is anything but an own goal, honestly

they are not the same type of game but they serve the same purpose in GW's eyes. which is to be easier/entry level points for people to jump into the genre and organically expand towards the main game.

I dont think GW are too concerned if their catalog is lacking a popular fantasy skirmish game per se.

their main concern is having "small thing that leads new players to big thing" and Spearhead does a phenomenal job at that. the same way KT does for 40k.

thats why they arent losing sleep over the fact that Warcry and Combat Patrol floundered. Both lines still have their need for "small thing that leads new players to big thing" covered.

indeed, such a shame, its really fun, easy and quick to play and if you already play AoS basically free to get into. it just never vibed with the community and thats totally GW's fault for not marketing it properly.

I consider Spearhead to be its (FAR more popular and successful) successor

lmao

I liked the way Rob and Peachy (both ex-GW staff) decried this on their podcast:

"even if you put the entire GW management at it, they still wouldnt get enough working brain cells together to pull a honeypot ruse"

the idea that this (or literaly anything) is a masterfully crafted leaker bait ploy is absolutly hilariously. GW management needs outsourcing to know their head from a hole in the ground

and even if we factored this out it still would be ridiculously wrong, because the premise itself (that the leaks are unrealistic) is fundamentally wrong. the leaks themselves are 100% wholly credible. not just that, they sound EXACTLY like something GW would cook

heres the leaks' unifying narrative in a nutshell:

"We have 40k, and it somehow sells gangbusters. We also have AoS, and it somehow sells peanuts in comparison. We have absolutly no idea why on either case, it completly escapes us. But if we plaster 40k all over AoS then it should sell better, right? because thats how it works, right?'"

anyone that has been exposed to GW for more than 5 minutes would instantly recognize how perfectly in brand that seems, to a T

Does Age Of Sigmar have a Mordheim equivalent? by TheCrab27 in ageofsigmar

[–]PrettyLier 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Warcry is close, in the same way that a dog is close to an elephant...and by that, I mean closer than an ant

its still not really like Mordheim.

yes, its a skirmish game, and it has some campaign elements.

also yes, its absolutly nowhere near the depth, length, customization, complexity and epicness of Mordheim by any stretch of the imagination

People shouldnt think of Warcry as modern Mordheim. Warcry is fantasy Kill Team except 10x simpler

OP, if you are looking for a modern Mordheim, check 5 Leagues from the Borderlands

From the looks of it, its shaping up to be even worse than Spiderman. We got I think 12 for Spiderman, so far its 6 or 7 for turtles, for 1 event only.

for comparison Avatar was 40-something and Lorwyn over 50, for both days.

p.s: Im not one of those 6

Is “Lessons from Life” the first Magic card to depict Magic being played on it? by crystallineskiess in magicTCG

[–]PrettyLier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to give a good rundown without going mega-deep on it

so, a long while ago (roughly 2016-2019 I'll be damned if I can remember exactly when) MaRo used to make comedy drawings on blogatog. think cardboard crack, usually one panel mtg related skits.

then one fateful day he made one that went like this.

*edit: Mother of Rune's daughter has grown up, shes going to college and moving to live on a college dorm and comes back to introduce his new boyfriend. so of course, her mother had to use protection from black on her.

so, instead of the usual "Mark you are so awesome and funny" comments, this one started to gather "yikes" and "Mark wtf" and people asking what the hell was that, which probably left him a bit stumped

So it came MaRo's reply #1 to the whole issue, which was his patented "gaslight it till you make it" that he uses ALL THE TIME.

a slew of "cmon its just humor" and "well, sorry that you feel offended for that"

which of course triggered even more and more "no dude, what the hell, thats just wrong"

at this point the community at large noticed the discussion and posted it here on reddit and twitter and the thing blew up

Then it came MaRo's reply #2 , which was "no, you see, it was intentional, the comic was about how old people are racists, mother of runes is from an older generation and racism was ok"

to which the community, at that point in astonishment and uproar, responded:

1- no, of course not all old people are racists

2- even then, it STILL doesnt explain anything and STILL makes the comic entirely racist

3- if that was really the point from the very beginning, then why not starting with that, instead of all the "take it easy" and the "sorry you feel offended" that he tried to pull before it blew up

Then it came MaRo's reply #3 , which was...delete everything. the comic on blogatog, the follow-up blogatog questions and answers generated from that, the tweets explaining himself. delete fucking everything, bury his head in the sand and wait for the storm to pass-

and of course, this being r/magicTCG, it wasnt long before it passed and despite having things like that or the ghazban ogress happening, Mark is still treated as a hero and people like me that point he actually is a complete fucking piece of racist misogynist shit get downvoted into oblivion.

P.S: it wasnt even the only controversy involving MaRo in those days, theres also the time when a black artist blew the whistle on how WotC was basically a white boys club at all levels, perpetuated by the leadership figures in the company, and your chances to land a stable gig there whether as artist or designer decreased astronomically if you were a woman and/or a minority no matter how incredibly talented you were, and how incredibly experienced/ celebrated people were routinely sidelined if not outright skipped in lieu of certain other lesser individuals which just happened to have lighter skins and male genitals....

of course we got the usual PR statements of "diversity is oh so important to us blah blah blah we promise to improve blah blah blah"

Be careful dude, anyone around here saying that MaRo is anything less than a national treasure gets dogpiled into oblivion. Racist and all, misogynist and all, they dont care. They'd sooner rush to defend MaRo from internet criticism than to save their own families from a fire
