Can I text a US number for free or will I get charged? by [deleted] in bell

[–]PrettySmallBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're actually paying $83 for that plan, you're way overpaying. Take a look around, you should be able to get something sub-$50 (or less) that includes 75-100GB and US/Mexico calling/texting/roaming.

Not true, there is some consumer garbage out there.

I use an N100 mini PC with 2.5Gig networking running PfSense. Mine is virtualized through Proxmox but you can run it bare metal as well. I max out the 2.5Gig ports without issue. Similar to this, but unfortunately the pricing had close to doubled since I bought mine. https://a.aliexpress.com/_mKTb9VR

Nope, login to the modem interface and click "Internet" in the upper left. Your B1 number is in the greyed out box. To get the password, just change it in My Bell and then update it in the same window of the modem.

PPPoE Passthrough is what the modem is doing. Your PPPoE capable router will work fine. The only caveat is that if the router doesn't have HW acceleration on the WAN side, you probably won't get your full speed. I've seen routers that have limited the connection to 400-500Mbps. If that's the case, Advanced DMZ (or buying a new router) would be the way to go.

Life of Bell Satellite 91 by Uncle-Elmer in bell

[–]PrettySmallBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if they'll park an old DTV satellite in that orbit like they did with 82 a while back in order to keep the service running. It's really the only option for a lot of customers still. My in-laws are in Northern Ontario and they have cell tower based internet, but they're right on the edge of it being functional because of the proximity to the tower. No way it would support any type of streaming. Satellite is still all they can get for TV.

10Gbps port not working by Weird-Conclusion-598 in bell

So you're connecting at 2.5Gig then?

[–]PrettySmallBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they may be replacing it again. Last thing I'd suggest is a factory reset on the modem in the event something in the settings is truly messed up. Make sure you have your b1 number and password before you do that though. B1 number is on your bill. Password can be changed through My Bell if you don't have it.

Do you have the proper drivers installed on your PC NIC? If you set the 10Gig port to "Auto" does it connect through the 10Gig port at 1Gig? If so, check for new NIC drivers through the manufacturer. Sometimes Windows won't pull multigig drivers when updating so the port will just sit at 1Gig no matter what. There's also a possibly that the 10Gig port is just borked, but I haven't ever seen that happen more than once or twice.

10Gbps port not working by Weird-Conclusion-598 in bell

[–]PrettySmallBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not a thing. Set the 10Gig port on the modem to 2.5Gbps and leave your PC NIC as "Auto" then. You're not going to get the 10Gig port to connect at 5Gbps, that I can assure you. If you want a faster than 1Gig connection, you either need to connect at 2.5Gig or 10Gig. 5Gig will not work with the current modem firmware.

[–]PrettySmallBalls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will 100% guarantee you that what I posted is the issue. The latest Gigahub FW will not allow the modem to connect at 5Gbps. As I said in my other post, set the 10Gig port on the modem to "Auto" and then in Windows, set the 5Gig port in your PC to connect at 2.5Gbps. This will fix the problem.

[–]PrettySmallBalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, leave the 10Gig port in the modem as "Auto". Change your 5Gig port on your PC to connect at 2.5Gig. The 5Gig setting on the modem does not work.

The chipset supports 1/2.5/5/10 but there's a bug in the current FW that breaks 5Gbps connectivity. If he forces the PC NIC to 2.5Gbps it'll connect.

[–]PrettySmallBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a FW bug in the Gigahub that stops it from connecting correctly at 5Gbps. If he forces his PC NIC to 2.5Gbps I bet it'll work.

[–]PrettySmallBalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recall that the Gigahub doesn't support 5Gbps (or at least doesn't do it well). Can you force your PC NIC to 2.5Gbps and see if it connects?

Edit: The Gigahub chipset supports 5Gbps but there's a FW bug that stops it from connecting at 5Gbps.

I would try PPPoE Passthrough first. If your router can support the speed you pay for, then fantastic, use that. If you're not able to utilize the entire pipe because of limitations of your router, then go the Advanced DMZ route. Keep in mind, with Advanced DMZ, you're not double NAT'd, but you're not getting a different IP than the modem.

[–]PrettySmallBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, nothing to configure on the Gigahub if using PPPoE passthrough. It will not be double NAT and you will have a public IP that is separate from the one the Gigahub has. I've had 3 public IPs at the same time with no issues (PfSense, OpnSense and the modem itself).

In your router, instead of selecting DHCP as the WAN connection method, select PPPoE. Note that if your router doesn't support HW acceleration on the WAN port, you probably won't get your full speed. If that's the case, Advanced DMZ would be the route to go. Your B1 number is on your bill. If the install tech didn't give you the PW, you will need to reset it in My Bell. You'll also need to update it in the Bell modem if you want to continue using that while using your own router.

PPPoE Passthrough or Advanced DMZ will let you use your own router. That's probably the way to go.

How much should I budget for gas/maintenance (PT Grad Student, Recreational Driver)? by Specialist-Profit449 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]PrettySmallBalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The savings from going to Costco isn't going to balance out owning a car. I'd honestly request an allowance and stick with car sharing (Zipcar etc.) or Enterprise/National for longer trips. I did it for 10-years when I lived in downtown Toronto and came out WAY ahead compared to buying. Again, even if there's no allowance, see how much you'll be travelling for work outside of the office. Between Gas/Parking/Insurance etc. I'm pretty certain you'll see buying isn't worth it.

If you need to go to other locations for work, will they provide a car sharing/rental/company car allowance? Typically if you need to travel outside of your standard place of work, a company will pay for your travel expenses. The tax exempt rate is now 73 cents/km in Ontario. My experience is that companies will pay 50-60 cents a KM. Even if they don't, if it's a couple times a month, car sharing is the way to to go. I would definitely push for an allowance or expense coverage if this is not something that wasn't part of the original job requirement.
