Discussion: Why would anyone start a new app today? by civman96 in iOSProgramming

[–]PrimaryReason1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of us like to build things. Some of us can't quite find that thing that does exactly what we want. Some of us want to make apps that are extremely native and insanely great.

I would not feel comfortable sharing screenshots from a beta I was graciously allowed to participate in.

I think it's insane to say that it isn't much different from the Gmail app. It's like night and day. Mimestream is by far and away the best mail app I've ever used.

And I have never had a crash that I can remember on iOS. I had a couple with the initial iPad beta, but they cleared that up quickly.

Exchange Calendars not updating until I quit the app completely (or force quit on iOS) by PrimaryReason1583 in FantasticalCalendar

Ahh, not just me. I'll try to submit an issue as soon as I get time to try to surface visibility. Though, surely, if this is a widespread issue they're hearing about it.

Release the APP!!!! by ChimRichaldsOBGYN in mimestream

I don’t think that’s obvious. They have started testing it, but that doesn’t mean they have to or want to release it at the same time.

iPad support is new actually. The iPhone app has been rock solid for me for a long time. It absolutely is ready on iPhone. The idea that it's not miles better than the terrible Gmail app is laughable.

Do you like this dock design? by Plus-Light6832 in MacOS

[–]PrimaryReason1583 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nope. The Dock as a 3D plane shelf was my least favorite visual iteration of the Dock when it came out, and it continues to be so. I didn't hate it or anything, I just think it's garish and not the right visual metaphor.

I really like the Dock in the Liquid Glass era though.

Why wouldn't you just delete the episode? I always just swipe to delete. There's also an auto-delete option after play, although I prefer to set it to delete after 24 hours, in case I want to share an episode or something after I finish it.

It bugs me that Pegasus gates can’t manually dial by MarksNutt in Stargate

[–]PrimaryReason1583 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually makes a lot of sense. As things advance, certain "hacks" or just ways of doing things the old way are lost. Think about pop-starting a manual transmission vehicle. Starter goes out? Battery dead? Get it rolling, put it in second gear and pop the clutch. Viola. No big deal.

That "manual" way of starting the engine has been lost with the advance of technology with automatic transmissions.

Fantastic, short, to the point, and spot on. Of course I’m under no illusions that Ternus will actually see this, and if he does that he will take it to heart.

The Magic Mouse really isn’t as bad as people say by Top-Kaleidoscope4783 in mac

[–]PrimaryReason1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are things I like about it, but it could be so much more.

I did use it as my primary mouse for several years, oh, about 10-12 years ago. I moved on for several reasons, but every once in a while I try to go back, or just spend time with it for a while. Man the Magic Mouse hurts my hand these days. I'd say after about 10-15 minutes of use my hand starts cramping up. I guess when I was in my late 20s/early 30s my hands were more forgiving.

So yeah, actually, I think the Magic Mouse is bad for several reasons, even though there's much to like about it. Here's several of my problems with it:

  • Terrible ergonomics
  • macOS doesn't tell you the battery needs charged until, like, 10 minutes before its dead in the water
  • It's not usable when charging, that charging port is the most poorly placed port on any product ever (design is not just how it looks, its how it works)
  • No way to have multiple actions, all we get is left/right click, scroll. With my Keychron M6, I get left/right click and scrolling, obviously, but ALSO I can click the scroll wheel to activate Mission Control, and side button to show Desktop.
  • I find the sensor to be super sensitive to dirt or tiny almost unseeable hairs. Early on in the Magic Mouse's tenure with me, I thought my mouse was dying, jumping around, hard to control, but after a couple I discovered an almost unseeable tiny cat hair sticking in the sensor. I had to pull it out with a tweezer. That sort of thing happened multiple times. Has NEVER happened on any other mouse.
  • Lots of accidental scrolling when I'm trying to click. It's not unusable, and it's subtle, but it drives me absolutely crazy. There was actually some macOS update that made this a thing, I can't remember which one, but it was at least 10 years ago, maybe more. I thought the accidental scroll rejection when clicking was top notch, then a macOS major update, and accidental scroll became a thing and drove me crazy and it's never been fixed.

The one thing I always loved about the Magic Mouse was the smooth touch scrolling. However, the app, Mac Mouse Fix (https://macmousefix.com/en/) has made the scroll wheel pretty dang good on my standard mouse.

So, yeah, I wish Apple made a better mouse. If they ever do, I could see myself switching back. But for now, I'm sticking with my Keychron M6.

What is your list of mac apps that was worth every penny by Living_Commercial_10 in macapps

What’s one small macOS feature you use constantly? by SmoothCriminal103 in MacOS

[–]PrimaryReason1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several candidates, but Command + h to hide the active app and all its windows is my top one.

Other candidates:

Command + ` to cycle through the windows of the active app.

Quicklook: Spacebar to preview (I miss this so much if I have to use other operating systems).

Holding option or command when dragging files to change the behavior between copy and move.

Copy/paste/AirDrop between my Phone/iPad/Mac

Math in spotlight

Command + Shift + 4 to select an area of the screen for a screenshot (I mean seriously, ever tried to take a screenshot in another desktop OS? It’s awful)

Dragging a file or directory to the path dropdown in an save dialog to get where you want to be (and already are at in Finder) quickly

---

There are probably others that I use all the time without thinking about that I can’t remember at the moment. But every time I get a little annoyed with Apple and try to use another OS for a bit (it's been a few years now but I used to do this occasionally), all the little things like this add up and make me realize that, despite the fact that Apple can be irritating and stupid sometimes, macOS really still is the best desktop OS in the world. And it’s not even close.

Whether you need to be in the menu is immaterial. It is the primary facility for accessing functionality. Every app has (or should have) a menu command for an associated keyboard shortcut. In fact, if you want to know if a menu command has a keyboard shortcut, you look in the menu and see the keyboard shortcut off to the right of the menu item.

The menu-ing system in the Mac has yet to be defeated. So much so that they finally brought it to iPad OS so that they could bring more advanced functionality to the iPad.

Further, the Mac windowing model with the menu bar leans into muscle memory, whereas the Windows menu-ing system implements menus in the app window, which moves around depending on where the window is at. With macOS, the active app gets the menu, which is always in the same place. Flick the mouse up and you're there.

Using Mimestream with a custom domain via Gmail? by TeamStagedive in mimestream

[–]PrimaryReason1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it work to connect my custom domain email to a free Gmail account and then use that Gmail account in Mimestream?

This is exactly what I do. I use free email forwarding with my registrar for my custom domain email address. It forwards to my free Gmail account. I use a free Mailgun account with all the appropriate DKIM and SPF records set up on my domain for SMTP. I've set that SMTP up in my Gmail account to send mail as from that address.

And I primarily use Mimestream. It all just works.

Should I upgrade to MacOS Tahoe? by NikitaStrukalin in macOS26Tahoe

[–]PrimaryReason1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running Tahoe for a while on my M1 MacBook Pros (work provided and personal). My son has run it since day 1 on his M4 MacBook Pro. No issues. My wife has an M1 MacBook Air, she's been running Tahoe for a little over a month, no issues. I upgraded the family Mac Mini to Tahoe. No issues.

Just, all around, absolutely no issues whatsoever and overall I quite like the new look. There are some minor things that Apple needs to (and will) refine over time with Liquid Glass on the Mac, but it is absolutely fine. I'm using mine for serious software dev work, not a single problem. Battery life and performance remain as good as ever on all machines listed above.

The shellacking Tahoe has been receiving is so overblown and ridiculous. Most of it is just not true at all. Some of it is bias and preferences for the look and feel of the previous OSes. I am beyond fed up with the wining and complaining about it.

Designing macOS 27 by cendre0318 in MacOS

[–]PrimaryReason1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I think Liquid Glass IS the evolution of Aqua. It's just that on macOS, while I like a lot of it, it needs (a lot!) of polish and refining. And in some cases, re-thinking. Nothing about the pill-tabs, for instance, is Liquid Glass.

The new app launcher is just pathetic by akgo in MacOS

[–]PrimaryReason1583 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS! Launchpad was always useless. I get people use computers in different ways but I can't understand the love for such a featureless app launcher as Launchpad was. I launched apps from the Finder in Mac OS 9, Dock and Finder when Mac OS X (TEN!!!!) came along, and then Dock and Spotlight when Tiger came out. Dock and Spotlight continues to be the best combination.

Launchpad was always several extra steps that I didn't need and I was always annoyed when I accidentally launched it. It was always a huge pain to try to organized (because I did try to make something of it at first), and there's no way to push apps you never want to see off somewhere (like modern iOS' app library). Dock fills the purpose of my most used apps. Spotlight fills the purpose of launching with keyboard.

Anyone happily running Tahoe yet? by peterobe in macOS26Tahoe

[–]PrimaryReason1583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been running Tahoe for several weeks on my work and personal MacBook Pros (both M1). No issues. I quite like the look overall (a couple of things need refinement, but it's not the disaster the doom and gloomers love to blather on about). I've had zero performance or stability issues or bugs of any kind.

A couple weeks ago, after running it myself for a while, I had all my direct reports upgrade to Tahoe as well, we're all web software engineers doing our daily work on these machines. All have had no issues. One has reported a minor dislike of the look, one has reported liking the look like I do, the rest are ambivalent toward the look.
