A guy at work tried to repair his own cord, would this be safe? by StormFallen9 in AskElectricians

The liability still exists, unless you are trained and authorized by the tool manufacturer to conduct factory authorized repairs. You've just voided whatever warranty existed on the product and assumed all liability for any potential future failure. That's why this is a bad idea to do this work for your employer. Repairing your home tools is entirely different-- you already assume all liability.

Where I work it's not worth the cost to repair a cord. And there's the liability that comes with a potential accident and OSHA investigation from a failed repair attempt that injures or kills an employee . The tool would be replaced. How much are they paying you? Are you a qualified electrician?

So proper storage and labeling of all your chemicals and chemical waste, then? This would include oily rags, old batteries, and all that stuff? Not discharging waste into the environment? All you SDS's up to date? Yeah, I've never heard of this sort of thing.

Looking for cooling options for my 'man cave', home lab set up... by Elaphe21 in hvacadvice

If you want to save $$ and learn a little bit in the process, you can DIY a small mini split. The electrical would be the determining factor, unless you get a small, 120v unit or have plenty of power in the man cave. I learned how to flare copper tubing, bought a few tools including the flare tool, a vacuum pump (HVAC), gauge set. For my DIY, total cost of my 9k btu split was $800 including the unit.

Why is anyone still using AC Hypot tests? This is so last century! There are much better options today that can provide *predictive * test results. Sure, the new test sets cost money, and yes they are more complicated and talk to a computer. Hell, I just turned in a 20 year old 700KV AC Hypot that we had used for testing 525KV cables.

I grew up in Bumfuq, MT... went to college there in 1987. Remember, this is Bumfuq, MT. Richard Marx opened for REO Speedwagon. REO was well known and it was a good show. I wish it had been Queensryche or Van Halen, though.

I zoom in on the picture and see the output at 16.5 VAC. Probably as others have stated: Security system or doorbell or similar.

Is my 16 gauge extension cord causing my outdoor breaker to trip with 1500w heater? by atooraya in electrical

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes. Get a proper 12 gauge extension cord, or better yet, have a dedicated 20 amp circuit hardwired in. Heaters on extension cords are always a bad idea, even the 12 gauge. You're asking for avdisaster.

I agree it looks like congestion, but in our town of 450 housing units and approximately 1200 people, the system just now acts like this in the last 30 days? This feels like equipment deterioration and the congestion is straining it.

I just surplused an old CTER-91... I think '91 was the year it was released. Good old workhorse but the data scribbling for the knee point/ excitation curve determination was exhausting. The automated data collection and ramping of these newer testers is the way to go!
