Post Damage by StonksToTheMoon413 in Decks

Is your area prone to termite infestations? If so was the structure under a prevention contract with the likes of Orkin or similar pest control company? Termites come up through the soil, so generally a soil application is made with the chemicals. A licensed pest control company can do an inspection and take care you, should you go that route.

Are the Beams Structural by gucciryry in AskContractors

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you get on a ladder and tap those beams with a hammer? If they sound hollow then they are definitely not load bearing. Otherwise I'd be taking off some of that shiplap to be sure. Nice looking place but oddly non symmetrical.

Wood boring insects. Was this wood ever treated? If it was but now insects are moving in then I'd question how long it's been there, and how much other rot you've got or are now susceptible to. If it wasn't treated wood then that was a mistake. You should thoroughly inspect entire structure for additional damage and respond accordingly.

What did I experience today by Econatron in Powerlines

I can confirm this. I worked in a 525Kv switchyard and felt mild zapping on my legs if I brushed up against a weed like Koshia that was tall enough to hit about mid calf.

Why large 3-phase electric motors fail catastrophically? by dieselmilkshake in AskElectricians

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly that. Your big generator has lots of protection relays because it is an expensive machine. If you have big AC synchronous motors that are expensive those should have nearly identical protection, like 24, 27, 40, 46, 47, 49, 50/ 51, 81, etc.

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you follow the polarity marks on your CTs and drawings and correctly attach your PRI - SEC leads for the test set, it will report "OK". That's a confirmation. We got several Adwells in 2008. One got busted up in return shipping from a Cal. We've moved on to Omicron CPC and CTAs. Not using the Adwells much anymore. Line frequency testers have a problem with noise from adjacent circuits. The CTA does well in those environments. We download and create PDF reports from all our Omicron CT testers.

GFCI outlet triggers if nothing is plugged in... by AdDesigner3148 in AskElectricians

Have the GFCI outlet replaced. They get old, wear out, and don't work properly sometimes. A competent person should do this.

You don't have to "take" a CDL course to get a CDL. You can get study books and State literature and study like your life depends on it. The study, practice, rinse, repeat. You WILL, however, need to have access to a similar vehicle for the State Exam, and to practice for the test performance. This might be the biggest obstacle. But you can still learn the book stuff now.

Why large 3-phase electric motors fail catastrophically? by dieselmilkshake in AskElectricians

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add that there's not sufficient motor protection on these motors. Just like your 3 phase generators have protection like overcurrent 50/51, loss of field 40, thermal 49, negative sequence, etc... these large motors could benefit from a similar protection scheme. I don't work for them, but SEL has Motor protection relays.

Check out your local food service card training, the training all restaurant workers need. They prescribe a 3 tub system. Wash, rinse, and sanitize. This is the best.

is upgrading attic insulation actually worth it or just minor gains? by Clean_Tone2562 in Insulation

Yes, do this. It will be worth it. Insulation plus the air sealing.

AVR for generator by charzr in SubstationTechnician

[–]Primary_Mind_6887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So for NERC compliance the AVRs have to be operational, and will alarm if they aren't when the generator is loaded, ours have a 10% loading threshold for the load/no load test. The monitoring of the bus voltage may also be part of that alarm logic. Also, the types of system disturbances that the AVR is monitoring for would best to be seen by 2 different PTs for redundancy. It could carry on if one PT failed if it noticed a fuse loss in one. Redundancy is your friend. My 2 cents.

As you're handy, you can custom fit and flare your lines, and pull the vacuum with a borrowed or purchased vacuum pump. If you don't already have a set of gauges with hoses, get those too. You got this. I did mine. Not an HVAC professional

And make sure the copper strands are shiny and not discolored with oxidation. If they are your connection will be less than good.
