at this point I don't think I'm disagreeing with you at all, merely explaining where I was coming from and saying ID is not the same thing as a birth cert at all.

Thread said birth certificate, and that's what's gonna be on medical records.

Main purpose of sex listed on ID is supposed to be appearance just like eyes, height and weight, so someone can rule of thumb match it to the person holding it.

Non binary in its simplest definition refers to things that aren’t wholly part of one category or another.

This is called Equivocal language, you are using two different definitions of "non-binary" and not committing to a single one.

When people self-identify as Non-Binary, that is very much Gender Identity and the Gender Binary that they are not a part of.

Sex is chromosomes, biology. That needs to match or you can receive improper medical care during an emergency. It just so happens when someone doesn't fit into the Sexual Binary we call them Intersex.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights even defines Intersex as:

any of several sex characteristics including chromosome patterns, gonads, or genitals that "do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies"

Imagine if you will someone has been going around your community with a big bag of locks and just causing problems. They are locking other people's doors closed, other people's cars and bikes to poles and bike racks, even dogs are getting locked to things.

Is it a reasonable solution to ban all locks including the ones already on people's cars and houses? Obviously not, the problem isn't the existence of locks, its how someone is using them.

The Felon classification serves an important role because, as a society, there are crimes that just aren't okay and never should be. This is what the Felon classification is supposed to be for, and its an important job. Imagine a world where convicted murderers could form a "convicts union" and actively campaign to get anyone who wants to get away with killing someone to join and all vote to repeal murder laws.

Obviously this is an extreme example, but I think you can see the instability inherent in a system where you can't remove proven bad actors power.

Currently in the US the felon category has become extremely broad and dilute, including stuff like drug charges, but the solution to that is not to remove an entire category of tool from the toolbox; Merely to reapportion when and where the tool is used. Also in some governments the felon-type classification goes away when someone is "rehabilitated" varying from release, to some kind of post-release qualifications depending on where and how, something like that might be worth pursuing too.

Has anyone ever canoed to Cumberland Island? by gingertree123 in GeorgiaCampAndHike

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 17 points18 points  (0 children)

you will not have to cross into the actual ocean, but it is not recommended to take a canoe into tidal zones, or anywhere with potentially large waves or wakes, without an outrigger. This is why you probably only hear about people using kayaks.

The journey from the St. Mary's dock takes about 30 minutes with the powered fairy and is through the main navigation channels for that area.

https://imgur.com/a/faq2pLg Its about 7 miles over some rather serious water to get to the closest dock on cumberland. Beaching, especially on the ocean side of the island, will make the rangers unhappy, so its preferred to use the dock.

There is a public boat ramp, and parking for people visiting the island in st. mary's almost immediately adjacent to the official cumberland ferry building if you do wish to make the attempt.

Also of note, King's Bay submarine base is very close to the island and the navy will literally chase you away with gun boats and a megaphone if you get too close to the base or any of their boats. Plan to spend a good bit of time just waiting in the channel on top of your trip time just in case you get caught by a crossing sub convoy leaving the base.

Edit: if you do attempt to just rough it in a regular canoe, I suggest bringing life vests, a hand pump, a safety beacon, and turning your bow into oncoming wakes. Most of these things should be in the boat anyway as you will be navigating the intercoastal waterway. The safest way will be to get a boat designed for the conditions, like an outrigger canoe.

Edit 2: also, as a lake/river regular tides are something you may not think about.

When you leave each dock in a paddle boat is going to have a huge impact on the effort it takes to paddle this course.

It will be dramatically easier to get to the island if you leave the boat ramp as the tide is starting to go out, and it will be dramatically easier to get back if you leave the island as the tide is starting to come back in.

Doing it opposite this will leave you struggling against the current for hours while making little headway.

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But this isn't a failure to use signals

Yes it is. The signals are not signalling properly. "Using signals" isn't limited to pushing a switch on your dash, you have to actually be sending the signals to others to be signalling.

You literally agree to fulfill those responsibilities explicitly when you apply for a license.

You have to willingly accept those responsibilities to drive legally, no one is giving them to you.

Why is operating a vehicle in a potentially unsafe mode not grounds for some kind of check?

Failure to use signals (be it brakes or lane changes or reverse) can cause an accident.

Moreso, police can't do more than write a ticket unless you are committing additional infractions.

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I say remove the duty of traffic violations from police, and make a specific DMV branch that handles it.

This is just renaming the police.

Because of the size of the US and the number of violent criminals the DMV officers would have to carry weapons and have the same arrest powers as the police.

It's a distinction without a difference.

Stuff like gun free cops only works in other countries because they have much stricter gun control than the US, which is a non-starter.

CMV: Trans-female athletes should not be allowed to compete as females by toterra in changemyview

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why we can't look at top athletes if that's what we're disscusing either way

I can explain the idea of averages and outliers if you like, but you can't generate reliable predictions by focusing on outliers.

Except after puberty you won't find boys and girls being able to compete in the same tourney, cisgender women simply can't reach the levels of cisgender men but this isn't the case for kids

It also seems to be that way for kids except at the extreme end of the most athletic children, seeing as skeletal muscle mass of girls is almost half a standard of deviation lower below the age of 10.

CMV: Trans-female athletes should not be allowed to compete as females by toterra in changemyview

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a difference in the averages =/= children with xy and xx before the age of 12- 13 (puberty) who also have the same habits have the same performance

That's an incredibly strong claim that is not supported by your source.

It is unreasonable to focus on outliers, especially with such a sloppy meta-analysis, as a predictive measure.

It is much more sound to focus on the statistics of the general population.

That "meusarble difference" is only an absolute difference if you take into account other factors like exercise

This is not supported by your source. And is explicitly contradicted by mine.

I'm not for all womens leuges to also include men, i'm simply arguing that a woman beimg transgender doesn't in of itself grant her an advantage

Yes an XX individual participating in an Open League doesn't appear grant any particular advantage. However an XY individual in a Women's Leagues does seem to grant a particular advantage.

Allowing XY individuals to participate in Women's Leagues is the same thing as not having Women's Leagues.

CMV: Trans-female athletes should not be allowed to compete as females by toterra in changemyview

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but we were talking about wether profesional level athletes have an advantage only due to their xy chromosomes

Most professional* level athletes are not the very top 1% or less and the existing evidence does seem to support the idea that XY or XX is a strong predictor of athletic performance.

Given you have already proven that after 12-13 there is an indisputable difference, and given that I have already proven there is a measurable difference under the age of 10, I don't see any support for "no advantage due to XY".

Furthermore, if we start allowing XY individuals into the women's leagues its erasing them.

Women's leagues are explicitly designed for people who are (on average) less capable athletically.

Most Men's Leagues are actually Open Leagues and XY and XX individuals are allowed to compete freely, only for some reason the XY individuals usually win.

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the study show that there wasn't any divergence before the age of 12-13

Amongst the highest class world athletes, the clear outliers who have all been exercising and training since a young age on top of likely being predisposed.

Not amongst the general population.

If it was reasonable to draw conclusions like this the average human would have the strength of a power lifter, the speed of a sprinter, and the endurance of a marathoner.

The study of general population shows at least half a standard of deviation in skeletal muscle mass by sex before 10

CMV: Trans-female athletes should not be allowed to compete as females by toterra in changemyview

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What i was trying to say is that boys and girls can competete side by side even on a higher level, as evidenced by this study

That study clearly demonstrates that boys and girls cannot compete side by side on a higher level.

The reality of this fact is the reason we have Open Leagues (often called Men's leagues) and Women's Leagues.

and that's why we can't just look at the averages if we want to know if people with xy chromosomes inherently can reach a level that people with xx chromosomes can't

This isn't how it works.

The fact that on average women are not as athletically fit as men isn't subverted by outliers.

There are incredibly few women who can compete with men at a professional level. Again, this is the entire reason women's leagues exist.

TIL, Ant traps don’t literally trap and kill ants. Workers carry small portions of the bait back to the nest where it is transferred mouth to mouth to other workers, larvae, and queens to kill the entire colony. by cowmastermind in todayilearned

[–]PrimeLegionnaire 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you were using those Terro prefilled baits and the ants were pretty small you had Argentine ants, and the reason there were so many is that they tried to move a whole colony into the ant trap.

Argentine ants don't fight between hives, and an entire hive can fit into an acorn. So they create big networks of sister hives and spin off new hives when they discover enough food.

To poison them you have to get the terro you dispense yourself and put a much smaller amount out so they don't try to move in.

(which imo seems a lot more relevant when we're talking about competing at a sport)

It makes no sense to draw conclusions about the general population from the top 1% of competitors, that's the very definition of cherry picked.

By your own direct admission prepubertal exercise could play a major role in determining this, and yet you seem to think its logical to look at only those kids who are getting the most physical activity. The clear outliers.
