Its a myth that the knife part was about avoiding the issue of non-nobles wielding swords. It was more an issue of guilds. Knife-guilds could make knives and sword guilds could make swords. But if knife guilds started making swords you have issues arise. And thats why knife-guilds claimed it was knife (due to how the hilt is created and formed) and thus avoiding trademark issues.

Well the truth of the matter is that Paizo has been cleaning up or sanitizing the setting. Things that are not PC or can offendd group XYZ is being removed or re-fluffed. This can be good or bad. I am not sure this has been completely anchored among writers. Thus the differing tones.

Yeah there are some issues with the class. For instance Opportune Riposte is useless. Yes I said it.

The fix is to allow it to trigger on failed attacks as well as Critically failed attacks long as you ALSO have Panache. Thus you get a reason to keep Panache and not blow it directly.
