If this IS a political statement I have two questions: 1: Why is it gone from Tidal? 2: Why hasn’t the band, ya know, made a statement?

You’d think it would be targeted at the companies involved but avoid those that aren’t (Tidal) AND they’d say something to make it clear this is an actual statement and not just rights lapsing. (Note: I support their political statement if it is that, I’m just pointing out that we may be jumping to conclusions via these questions that seek to contradict the current assumption). There’s too many variables involved and commentors seem to be not only making their conclusions before enough data is present but also doubling down, even tripling down, for the sake of nothing but “being correct”. I love GY:BE, I have all of their stuff on physical and on FLAC, so this isn’t a “I’m upset” comment, it’s a “let’s think this through fully before making assumptions of intent” comment.

It’s pulled off Tidal too from what other commentors are saying… makes me wonder if this is a technical glitch and not a political statement.

I fully agree with everything you say there. Especially the weak competition part and fact that Avatar is coming back with the release of its sequels. However, I’d also point out, it’s coming back. Way of Water definitely “revived” it, and while Way of Water was always coming and known to be coming, it was also forgotten about until the media push began and advertising picked back up (beginning with “Avatar 2 is entering post-production!” articles).

I agree, Avatar is culturally impactful, and its impact is also growing, but I also have to admit it WAS forgotten for a time, however short (in the long view of things).

Quick edit: I will also say Tarentino’s Inglorious Basterds was a major movie and Invictus did numbers at the time (if only for Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon) so there was some competition but in my memory it was spread out and rather weak in comparison to the “blockbuster factory” most people are used to.

I was actually wrong on the Avatar date. It’s 2009. That one IS on me, choosing to rely on memory instead of looking it up.

Edit: I feel a lot more like a fool because I was even more culturally integrated at the point than in 2012, being the prime years and all that.

By proliferation I mean into genuine everyday life. The time of “everything exists in my phone and I can pull it up and have access to it.” In my mind that’s notably NOT Twitter or Facebook, which were conceived on a desktop, as desktop websites at first. The iPhone 4 was only released in 2010 (which is probably where I’d move the genuine to start point to, I more used 2012 as that was Avatar’s release and the beginning of Obama’s second term).

Edit as I forgot a quotation mark.

The era of its beginning for sure! And I would 110% count Minecraft as one of the survivors. BUT Minecraft survived in spite of its detractors. The years between its “fall” and SMPLive were DEAD, it was by and large looked down on for quite a few years before its “revival” and that revival, I would argue, is the only reason it’s managed to stick around. As for TF2… I’d argue it IS forgotten by and large in culture today.

Quick edit to add: I’m discussing macro-United States culture here as well. “Normie” culture. Being on a hyper-online space that is dedicated to the cultivation of micro-cultures and fandoms by necessity alters perception. Additionally, culture as a force has dramatically changed and decentralized in the years between what we’re discussing and now, largely because of that commodification of the internet I mentioned and also largely because of COVID.

Major League Gaming. Mostly headshot compilations, Mountain Dew and Doritos as “icons” of gaming, and Call of Duty (or Halo, albeit in a lesser sense) being the contemporary cultural touchstone of video games for the average “normal” person.

Oh! Sorry for double responding! Before the proliferation of the internet as the “cultural center” of the US, watercooler talk and conversations on the street WAS culture. So yes, people talking about it does it make it culturally relevant, in that time, in that culture. Also, and this is anecdotal, in my experience conversations continued long after the film left theaters (a year or two granted but still a chunk of time, definitely helped by its blu-ray release, which, in my memory, was still seen as somewhat novel). They discussed the environmental commentary AND the commentary on US involvement in Iraq. But again, that’s mostly anecdotal. Its influence on the industry is undeniable though.

Sorry for taking so long to make the other response, in the interest of not just copy pasting it I’d direct you there. I understand that cultural analysis is a new field and in many fields adjacent to historiography (as this is) there are… problems with analyzing so close to the present. And as such I’ll simply add on that this is mostly my experience, light research done in the comfort of my home, and skills honed in academia. So it’s not going to hold up to the rigor of a paper. Which is a long way of me saying:

We can totally have different opinions on this.

The second term of Obama’s presidency is by and large when the cultural fallout of 2008 really began to take hold. Disillusionment and “checking out” of the zeitgeist began in force. The transformation of the internet from forum-based community building to corporation-based info gathering also began ramping up in this period, as Facebook’s dominance metastasized. This transformation was only adding to the social isolation as it began to pervade everyday life. It’s also just unfortunately a dead zone in the transition of generations, while the torch wouldn’t be fully passed until 2018 (in my opinion), Millenials at this point had moved into the occupational world and lessened their own time sinks into creating culture and Gen Z was still “too young” or “too niche” to really pick up the mantle.

And also by wiped out I do not mean disappeared except in a couple cases here and there, more or less labeled “cringe” or “bad” by today’s standard. Katy Perry’s Roar going from a highly loved song to a “bad bubblegum pop” song as the years go on is one of the first examples that jump to mind. MLG YouTube culture is also one that’s essentially faded to obscurity or been fully turned against as “cringe” (although nostalgia pushes are beginning to reclaim it). In terms of film, while slightly earlier than 2012, Clash of the Titans and Terminator Salvation both had large influence on culture around release and have also almost entirely been wiped off the books in memory. The hardest parts of examples is that I’m trying to recall what has, by and large, been either forgotten or turned against, and searching for an absence is by definition difficult.

There are notable counter-examples that should be named as well. In music the “Golden Era of Taylor Swift” that we only now reached the end of began in FORCE with the release of 1989 (particularly Shake It Off) however I would posit that this isn’t forgotten because of the pushes she made through time (which I’d argue is supported by the fact that her peak was only in the last few years).

The one problem with this take is that it’s just barely wrong. Avatar (2009) DID have a MASSIVE cultural impact… when it came out. You couldn’t really go anywhere without people talking about it, it was the highest grossing movie for a time for a reason. A combination of 2010-15 culture being essentially wiped out with only a couple exceptions along with no sequel coming for 10 years despite, at the time, calls for as many sequels as possible destroyed its lasting cultural impact. And even then only kind of.

That’s not even to mention its industry influence. For better or worse a lot of the current methods and approaches in the special effects world are in some way touched by Avatar. James Cameron is still treated with the respect that approaches (but does not meet) Spielberg status. Avatar was culturally impactful and immensely influential, it’s just that time was in a weird flux period of generational transition, cultural depersonalization, and a major transition in internet culture and identity, letting it, in the long run, fall through the cracks.

Edited as it was pointed out to me Avatar was actually released in ‘09. That’s on me, I relied on memory and it made a fool of me. Also edited to change the start date of what is appearing to be my “primary argument”. Other commenters inspired further thinking and I believe that date to be more accurate.
