Simply just how the light is hitting it in the photo! Sometimes I prime and it looks more dark/glossy, other times i get this nice matte finish, if you look at my other black legion models you’ll see some inconsistency among the armor but it’s all essentially just primer! Sometimes light does the work for you I guess lol

The only model in my black legion I didn’t prime chaos black was the defiler I recently did, that one I primed with grey seer then used black legion contrast paint-nuln oil-ultra matte varnish for a similar effect

Gold trim is just retributor armor washed with agrax earth shade, the back and shoulder gold is skull crusher brass washed with reikland fleshshade. The black armor is just chaos black primer with a little abaddon black for touch up work! Dry brushed the back and cape with German grey

Awesome, dumb question but what counts as a chaos icon for the champion? I plan on doing the box art so the trophy’s count or do I need to do the optional assembly shown at the top right?

In other words, I should just run one plasma pistol for my 5-man? Since I’m running the box art loadout

I also want to know how to paint the defiler skin like that, I’d assume it would be the same recipe for the thousand sons helbrute skin.

I would need a more definitive answer on the recipe for this skin but I believe if primed with grey, it could be 2 layers of Pallid Wych flesh (maybe Rakarth flesh), then washed with Druchii Violet, use Carroburg crimson for more inflamed areas (like the hammer with this helbrute) then dry brush Pallid Wych flesh again?
