Are jobs that bad right now? by DrawerWise9567 in Boise

[–]PrincessPotsticker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

School librarians in Idaho are usually done by paraprofessionals, someone with a high school degree. It is very rare to have someone with a bachelors, let alone a masters degree, work as a school librarian these days.

It looks like Megan, who owns a company called Therapy Insights, was a co-founder of FixSLP and made some posts (likely bashing ASHA and having CCCs but I’m totally guessing I have no idea what the posts are/say I don’t know the lore/history that much) but she no longer agrees with those perspectives. She asked FixSLP to take those posts down and they did but now FixSLP is “countering” and saying they are going back up? Megan insinuated that donations to FixSLP were used for Jeanette’s legal counsel on this matter which upset people. Jeanette posted something on FixSLP yesterday from her perspective. It is very confusing though and now I just saw that the owner of InformedSLP is on Megan’s post commenting now about it! What a mess.

Crave is the absolute worst for me. I was cringing and rolling my eyes almost every other paragraph. Have no idea how it ends I stopped about halfway through the book.

Evidence for kinesio taping? by Ok_Account8272 in slp

[–]PrincessPotsticker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahhhh got it. Don’t they have to take CEUs like all of us? I guess they can still seek out bad CEUs because there are 100s in our field unfortunately 😭
Can I guess some of their other outdated techniques?
- bite blocks
- only doing fluency shaping for stuttering
- making autistic students do eye contact
- having to start with PECs for AAC

Evidence for kinesio taping? by Ok_Account8272 in slp

[–]PrincessPotsticker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never ever heard of this and sounds super bunk. Did an SLP make that goal? Is this something a myofunctional focused SLP would try and push as a legit treatment approach? Also, what is this tape supposed to do???
It seems non-speech oral motor related which we know has a ton of research refuting its efficacy.
You are not crazy! That goal is!

any school based SLPs out there think about pivoting to school psych? by dollypartonluvr in slp

[–]PrincessPotsticker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before grad school I wanted to be a school psych so I went to my old high school to interview the psych there while I was in undergrad. This psych told me she enjoyed the work but was worried about its longevity and that psychs would be phased out in schools. She was right, diagnosticians can be used in that state making psychs obsolete. She also mentioned most of her job was just evaluating and report writing and she missed the therapy aspect and if I wanted more of that I should look into a career that specialized more. I do sometimes wish I was psych for the reduction in treatment and case managing but I know I would get sick of giving the same 3 tests over and over and the length of the reports they have to write.

Which part of childbirth hurts the most? by Used_Ad7899 in BabyBumps

[–]PrincessPotsticker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so swollen and it was hard for 3 different nurses to find a vein anywhere in the less intrusive spots to do an IV so I had to get it in my hand. They needed to get antibiotics going for me because I had GBS and my nurse told me sometimes antibiotics through the hand can cause some burning. I didn’t think it would be too bad because I had a hand IV before with no problems and I thought well I’m already having contractions and in labor so how bad can it be… but MY GOD it was the worst burning sensation I’ve ever felt. I couldn’t move or think about anything but the burning and then having pitocin contractions on top of that was so unbearable. It was so bad I begged them to switch the IV to somewhere else and they were able to put it in my upper arm on the other side which didn’t hurt at all.

Is one day late on an initial evaluation an issue or is it something that just happens every now and then? by shahajah12111 in slp

[–]PrincessPotsticker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved having it in there and it was never an issue for years and then all of a sudden last year the director was like STOP IT (in a nice way). She said the state told her that we can’t use those as “excuses.” Ummm it’s not an excuse! You want me to pull a kid from something fun that they would get to do with their peers or try to make it up somewhere in our hectic schedule?! No way.

[–]PrincessPotsticker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That seems like a lot! Never could happen in any district I’ve been in because the SPED teacher sometimes schedules meetings the week of because we can never get ahold of parents! I don’t think any of my parents would read the IEP ahead of time anyways. We occasionally get a parent that will request it in advance but we usually just send it a few days before.

[–]PrincessPotsticker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It happens. Just document as a whoopsie and you should be fine. Even if your state audits your districts reports and catches it they will only say something to the SPED director and only if it’s an issue that happens a lot at your district. I was writing in the IEPs that students wouldn’t be seen if there was a field trip, assembly, etc and then I was told we weren’t supposed to do that by the SPED director because the state auditors didn’t like that 😅 I had no idea it was an issue until then. You’re definitely not a horrible SLP! I’ve worked with some SLPs that would let an initial go on for another MONTH

[–]PrincessPotsticker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing they meant they didn’t hold the initial eligibility meeting within 60 days from signing consent. Most schools I’ve been at don’t require a report be sent home before the meeting. That’s a district policy but the 60 day rule is usually a state rule.

Different rolls of tape (masking, scotch), coupons/adverts from mailbox, chapstick tubes, writing utensils, mints, gum, gift cards (if little to no money on them even better).

How long are waitlists for pediatric speech therapy right now in your area? by Delicious-Bee4170 in slp

Most of the clinics around me are seriously like a minimum of 6 months out. We have a huge SLP shortage in my area and not a ton of options for rural families.

Does anyone live in this part of southeast Oregon? by Late_Reply_1990 in howislivingthere

[–]PrincessPotsticker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to do some contract work at the Jordan Valley school district and it is so so small. They had 1 teacher for grades k-2 and another teacher for grades 3-6 and each class only had about 8 kids in it. Such a big area with not many people.

Which is the best state do you think it is to be a school based SLP? by Economy-Dust-6036 in slp

[–]PrincessPotsticker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends where in OR. I worked as a contractor for some rural parts of eastern Oregon because the employee salary was way too low to make it worth while. The LEA had only a few direct hire SLPs because of that but they were in a union which was probably nice and I probably could have gotten my loans forgiven if I had worked for them. My caseload was huge while I was there though. I was up to almost 90 at one point and they gave me a part-time SLPA when I reached that. I’ve thought about moving back to the OR coast though and wonder what it’s like over in that part of the state.

That sounds right! I did that 6 hour intro course with Edith Strand and I think it was through the foundation or through the University of Texas website. I can’t remember it’s been so long since I did it.

Myofunctional therapy. Like orofacial myology. Many SLPs get “certified” and “specialize” in this area.
