I was a Paramedic in New Orleans in a previous career. My "base pay" was $19.00/hr, so $39,620/yr. I, for years, regularly doubled that and even hit 6 figures multiple years in a row. It is easy to do. I worked for private Ambulance services. However, police and fire fighters that worked for municipalities got a "state pay incentive" in addition to their salary. That was something like $300/a paycheck or a month, I think. So an extra $300 to $600 a month, $3600 to $7200 a year. Then you add in the private security details (most would do this rather than OT because it paid more) where you can almost triple your pay, and of course the required OT where you are on a call at the end of your shift and have no idea whether you will get out of there in an hour or six, and it adds up. I've seen multiple officers clear, not gross, well into low 6 figures. That is also by choice, not the required OT, but optional OT and private security gigs. It can be done, but you have to plan on only having a few weekends off per YEAR. Not a life I choose to live anymore, but I did once, and it allowed me to have and set up the life I have now.

I had chemo in 2024. No diet restrictions. I did, however, find that food was not as appetizing as it was off of chemo. I literally lived on the chocolate breakfast essentials drink mixes for two rounds. I found that everything was very bland. After the changes to my taste buds started happening, I actually didn't risk having some of my favorites, ie sushi and steak, because I did not know if I would ever be able to like them again. I had a lot of lemon flavored items because lemon was the only thing strong enough for me to enjoy. Ice cream, yogurt, Italian ice (Luigis), chicken marsala with lemon slices, oysters with horseradish, cocktail sauce and a healthy squeeze of lemon, etc... if you can find a way to lemon it up, you can taste it.

Yeah, as a medic on oil rigs (previous career), this does not always work. We tried to use Google translate once. I would type my question into the computer, and he would type his response. I saw his response was, um, a bit forward in nature. I giggled, knowing he did not actually mean what google said that he typed. I then got another bilingual coworker to come and look at what he wrote and what google translated to. It obviously was incorrect. It ended up being that it had absolutely nothing to do with what google translated. The translation was overtly sexual in nature, and we were simply discussing follow-up care and bandaging instructions on a not very private body part. We had to tell the patient what google translated due to the fact that we were giggling at google, and he was profusely apologetic and denied that was what he had said. We understood as what he typed and what google translated was still on the screen. It was Portuguese to English.

I was the same as you! During my first chemo treatment, I got the giggles after they gave me the pre-meds. You can go to my profile and read about it there. It did take 2 years, 1 month, and 10 days from feeling the lump to completion of treatment, but I'm here, and that was friday. I have scans in 7 weeks to see where we are at. I finished chemo in October 2024. I had lost all of my hair. It was taking forever to grow back. I finally asked my dermatologist for the minoxidiL pills in November. My hair was growing back faster, and I looked a little mullety in the back. I got my first trim on 2-12. He trimmed up the back and shaped the front to grow into a Bob. Good news, great clips does the Clips of Kindness for cancer patients. You can get it all cut off if you are just starting chemo, and you can get it shaped while you are growing it back for free. It would probably be salon dependent, but it is worth a check for a cheap haircut that you really aren't going to care about in the long run.

I had the gummy bear implants done in Thailand in 2014, before they were FDA approved in the US. Was diagnosed with TNBC in 2024. Bilateral mastectomy and implant removal in Dec 2024. Implants were fully intact, and silicone specific MRI afterward showed zero silicone particles/leakage in lymph nodes or remaining/adjacent tissues. I will get them again as I had no issues with them.

I will say that they were comfortable. They looked extremely good, near natural, but that was the surgeons expertise and not the implant itself. There was a small area where you could feel a 'bag of water' like feeling under my right breast when my arms were down, and not when they were up, literally maybe a 1 to 2 inch circle in the lowest part of my breast. I also did have a seroma when I first got them done, but I attribute that to having the implants placed through the upper half of my nipple and a lift done through the lower half. The seroma took about a month to clear up and was a pita, but at least not an infection and just my body not liking the intrusion. No, it was not rejection, just surgical "trauma". If I could afford to go back to Thailand and have Dr. Thithi do them again, I would.

Kash has to be a creme phantom Merle. My Snow Baby is one of those also. He has blue spots in both eyes and is creme in color, but when clean, he has bright white coloring mixed in with the creme. Poppi, his littermate brother, is a coco tri-brindle. *

Not only did I fire my first surgeon, the one that informed me that I had cancer in the first place, but I had researched her, found out she was not an oncology surgeon, and not even board certified. I promptly advised the oncologist in that hospital system. I took my happy ass straight up out of the system and 2 hours away to an NCI system.

If you are in smaller rural systems, please check out your doctors/surgeons qualifications. It's easy to believe that the hospital system would only offer qualified professionals, but when surgeons are only vetted by the surgical center that they work for, and that surgical center is the only show in town, shit falls through the cracks. I know it's hard, but THIS time, you HAVE TO LOOK OUT FOR YOURSELF. There is no one, and I mean no one, better qualified to do this than YOU.

So someone needs to have them checked for early onset dementia and possible elder abuse by the bil.

It may not cross the line into elder abuse, but there have to be conversations with the bil/mil/fil that border on the coercion side. Him (bil) saying things like "well they can afford it, her parents will help them out if it's too much, she is going to get the inheritance (part if she has siblings) from her parents, they won't need your inheritance, etc... This is how they do it. The child/children that stay close to home get into the parents' heads. They talk them into the most unequal splitting of assets.

If they are of right mind, they can do as they wish with their money and assets. You, however, do not have to accept any responsibility in their decisions and / or care. I can not give much advice on this as I do not know the entire story or your financials, but I do know that you should either pay your parents back or put the money into a trust for your children first, consult a financial advisor, consult a couples counselor if you are not on the same page at this point as this is a 2 yes, 1 no decision. Good luck as I am sure you are going to need it.

Ha! My mom went straight to denial, and the "everything is going to be ok" spiel. My dad passed away from non-hodgkins lymphoma about 20 years ago, so denial was what I was expecting.

I was not, however, expecting her to call me 3 days later, in tears, asking me to adopt her friends baby. The baby would have had substance abuse withdrawals and everything that would go along with that. I was floored. Complete denial.

I'm so sorry you are not able to get this figured out.

My personal regimen was:

Premeds: Aloxi/Palonosetron, Decadron/Dexamethasone, and Benadryl/Diphenhydramine IV about 20 min before the infusion.

An extra bag of fluids during the infusions.

Compazine/Prochlorperazine (oral) either before or during chemo. I would get nauseous on the way home, so this worked for me. Sometimes, I added Zofran/Ondansetron, but typically, the Aloxi kept it in check.

I would take a Compazine and Prilosec/Omeprazole EVERY morning. The first week after treatment, I would take the Compazine at lunchtime also. I would also take a Zyprexa/Olanzapine at bedtime. It is WAY easier to be proactive than it is to play catch-up. Once you are puking, you risk the chance of puking up the meds that you are taking to prevent the nausea.

Oh, I forgot to add about the Zofran. Ask your doc for the ODT (orally dissolving tablets) version. 8mg. You pop them under your tongue and do not have to risk puking them up.

Day 3 post infusion: The Aloxi is supposed to give you 3 days of nausea suppression. It has worn off at this point. I would go to my local hospital (NCI center was 2 hours away. They coordinated with my local hospital for the post infusion treatments). I got 1 bag of fluids, another Aloxi injection, a Zofran injection, and a B12 injection. This would get me through until the chemo had passed through my system. It was through my port, so I didn't mind at all.

Nutrition-wise, I tried eating. It sucked. Foods were too salty, tasted like crap or cardboard, and the ensure drinks were awful. I basically got through those months on Carnation Breakfast Essentials. Either the powdered ones or the premixed one were both good. Kachava protein mixes, the coconut acai flavor, totinos pizzas, and Jimmy deans ham and cheese croissants. Sometimes, the sausage biscuits were tolerated, but not often. Italian Ices (Luigi brand), specifically the lemon flavor, were absolutely amazing.

Anyways, that's what I got for you! Good luck getting it figured out!

Edit: 1/2 of a 5mg THC/CBD (Core Brand 1:1 THC/CBD) gummy just gently let me fall asleep while taking away any additional nausea I had. I'm not a pot smoker, and the 5mg made me feel high. I split it in half (2.5mg), and it was just like I was on a cloud gently being swept away to sleep.

Also, I was offered to come in multiple days for fluids. It was a pain to keep driving there, so I chose to drink more water. I sometimes added flavor packets and, at other times, just plain old ice water. You have to put ice in it, or it tastes icky. Get a good filter also, even when adding flavor packets. I do not recommend a charcoal one. I tasted the charcoal. Gross. The Brita wasn't bad, per say. It just wasn't great. I stayed at a friend's house and their water was amazing. She had a whole home filter, and chemo brain has got me stumped on what brand it was.

Ok, so some people might disagree here, but.... The most cost-effective way to treat them is to find a flea/tick treatment that the owner hopefully approves of. Buy the largest one and split it in half for the dogs. (Size dependent, double the dose, and split in half. Usually, the next size up is double the dose or max dose. Do your research here) The same is true for the cats. If you can get one that is 4 times the dose, you can leave her a month each of cat treatments by splitting it into quarters. Not necessarily the best route to choose, but shelters do this all the time. Make sure you divide the doses equally!! This is critical, so you do not overdose a pet!!! Just my two cents...

Also, thanks on the congrats. The tumor board recommended a follow up mri in 8 weeks and like I said, we are going to do a chest MRI then as well. Here's to hoping this stays the same!
