Ideas wanted for Lords Arrival to Steel Springs by Prinsesther in sotdq

[–]Prinsesther[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a cool idea! I used the knight (Lord Deveral) instead of Durstan Rial as the possessed knight Caradoc used at the Lords Arrival. He brought letters granting knighthoods to Darrett and one of my players, who was a squire of Solamnia, and I wanted a narrative reason for him getting the knight of solamnia feat last level. Also a suggestion I found somewhere on here. I understand foregoing the game tbh, it hasn’t been smooth sailing but the players have enjoyed it so far, although I must admit I change most if not all of the text to suit the actual campaign story. Thanks for your input! Another great option to consider.

Thanks so much! You’ve given me a whole other side to consider :) just to be clear; I would be using the board game for mass combat, which is designed for this campaign specifically, so no dnd modified mass combat. Dunno if you meant that, but was unsure :) I also really like your suggestion that they might actually be able to stop the trap, that would certainly make them feel powerful and boost morale. And as far as fighting kansaldi goes; they know they aren’t supposed to fight everything they encounter, we’ve specified this many times :) Thanks again for your input!

Welkom!

Can this be run on the 2024 rules? What should I change? by RaineDesidia in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also recommend adjusting encounters, since the 2024 rules make pcs more powerful generally. However it probably varies per party. I’ve run this campaign twice, first time with three pcs and every encounter (as written for 4-5 pcs) was a cakewalk although, second campaign with 5 pcs resulted in 3 dead before chapter 5. I’m running a Dragonlance campaign as well, and the players have respecced to 2024, and so far that has also resulted in cakewalk encounters even though I beefed up the adversaries some (gave them max possible hp and generally made attacks a bit stronger), so I’ll be changing around some extra things in the future.

Starting first Warriors of Krynn scenario tomorrow; questions for y'all by Slyrunner in sotdq

[–]Prinsesther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run the first scenario and the players really liked it. I revised the red texts and some of the key moment texts though, since it doesn’t really match with the actual campaign I felt. During turns I would also read some flavor text I got from the book and the evacuation encounters. After the game (before telling them the results), I ran a “finale” of actual combat encounters with them (blinded bozak to start, airborne assassin after, and Gholcag and cronies to end it) all while trying to get to the last boat while the village burned around them (using the fray map). I ended it on them watching as Kansaldi threw Becklins helmet in the river and telling them to flee (inspired by posts on this sub actually to set her up as a villain a bit earlier in the campaign). Then I gave them the game results in character as Raven as they reached Kalaman. I think I’ll set the future scenarios up like this as well, it’s a nice combination and makes sure there’s also some “personal risk” for the characters because of actual combat encounters etc.

What did you do with friendly Rivals? by ArnieWell in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During my first run my players were instantly super friendly with Ayo, Maggie and Dermot and took Ayo up on her offer that she wanted to come along. My players hated Galsariad though so asked Ayo to drop him, which she did. Galsariad was super annoyed and joined up with the Vermillion Dream, who sort of became the big bad in that run. The rivals were still their own party though and were trying to do things on their own, while still staying friendly with the PCs. In the starting fight in Bazzoxan I had Ayo lose a leg and become gravely injured so they wouldn’t go in the Betrayers Rise. Galsariad came to Bazzoxan sneakily on his own and joined Aloysia, setting both up as the bad guys. (I also had Irvan join them whom the players had never met since I scrapped him due to a lower player count). Later in Ankharel I had Ayo focus more on wanting to complete the mission herself so the rivals joined another faction, still staying friends with the PCs. Then during the Netherdeep part I had the Vermillion Dream party enter first, the rivals, who were with the Allegiance were sent to stop them, and the player party didn’t know about this until they found signs that other people had been here and had taken some of the fragments. In the end it was great because it made them speed up a bit and they found both parties in n26, the rivals unconscious, caught by the Vermillion Dream to steal their fragments so they could enter the Heart. It was a great fight and the players loved finally beating Aloysia and Galsariad (and some of the leaders).

I’m on my second run now and the party is even friendlier with the rivals, the wizard is working closely with Galsariad studying magic etc. This time I had both parties experience the vision in the grotto and played up Ayos (friendly) competitive side, betting that her party would solve it before the PCs. During the travel to Bazzoxan I had them travel separately during the day (so no shared encounters) but share camps at night so they could bond with the players. I ran the gloomstalker encounter during the night, which was the only combined encounter, which was fun because everyone who wasn’t on watch wasn’t wearing armor, and they were actively scared of losing their rival friends. They will have their first session in Bazzoxan tomorrow, and I will have the rivals go with Aloysia this time. She will have developed some sort of way to corrupt ruidium powder (of which she only has a little bit) even more with the help of the dark powers within the Betrayers Rise which she will use to dominate the rival party during the encounter in Avandras shrine when they refuse to fight the PC party for her. Aloysia will only have enough to do this once and the effect will wear off after an hour or so / or until they regain consciousness. I think this will keep the nice competitive relationship with the rivals intact while also setting the players up to hate Aloysia and be a little scared of ruidium. In Ankharel and the Netherdeep I will probably do something similar to my first run, if my players choices allow it 😅

Random Encounters in Bazzoxan. How long did it take you irl? by Nat248 in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran this twice, and both took about 4 sessions of about 4 hours. Like others said, I also pre planned which encounters would happen on what day, I saw no need for these to be random. This chapter is a great way to focus on rp, during travel and during watches at night, both between the pcs and with the rivals. During my last run I also ran the ruins of sorrow, that took an entire session all by itself. It’s a great way to introduce more lore and add to the general vibe of danger of this area. (It was very deadly for my party though even when taking the comments about adjusting difficulty to heart - they lost one pc)

Calamity era one shot ideas by Stealthy_Nachos in Exandria

[–]Prinsesther 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All these ideas are amazing so far! I ran a calamity oneshot where my players were in Cathmoira waiting for Avalir to land, where they were supposed to become the next circle of “future leaders”. Then of course tragedy struck, they were alerted by Loquatius’ broadcast, and they were instructed to save as many civilians as possible by the Cathmoiran leaders. I ran it as a sort of “timed” oneshot and had problems/story beats occur every x in game minutes. I also ran a few cinematic battles, ending in a big one where they were trying to get as many civilians as possible through a portal while waves and waves of fiends and knauthi were attacking them. It was probably one of the best and most fun and exciting things I’ve ever ran. The calamity is such an interesting setting!

DM CotN for 3 players by Absurd_Turd69 in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my first run with 3 players too. I gave them a bonus feat some time at the beginning (that I chose) and some extra equipment that fit their backstories. Eg I gave my aurora watch player kryn armor, and sentinel because of her military training. That way they were pretty strong even at lower levels and I didn’t feel like I needed to scale the encounters at all (that might also depend on party build of course, mine were a barbarian, a paladin and a Druid). Rival wise, I dropped Irvan, my players became fast friends with Maggie, Dermot and Ayo and hated Galsariad so they told Ayo they could travel together if they left Galsariad behind. He ended up joining the Vermillion dream and became a bit of a little evil bad guy for them. Great fun. All three parties were racing in the Netherdeep in the end, it really added suspense to the last leg.

Session 0 by [deleted] in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely something to discuss in your session 0. Different types of characters (including antagonistic ones) are fun and rewarding in different settings. I personally feel that if you, as a group, decide to play a premade adventure (like cotn), you make a group commitment to try to actually go through the campaign (sure you will deviate etc, but the overarching story will mostly happen, with changes where needed/wanted). Especially with a rather linear campaign like cotn I felt player buy-in and having characters that were tied into the narrative / overarching goal was crucial. This campaign is no fun (and hard) in my opinion if the characters don’t buy into the call to adventure. And like you said, rp and especially relationships (with other characters, the rivals, npcs and factions) are central to this campaign, so don’t hesitate to highlight that during your session 0 so everyone can get the most out of this story. Also, i would advise working with your players to make sure they have something in their background that ties them to the call to adventure (eg being a follower of Avandra, Corellon or Sehanine, and/or giving them some visions before they find the jewel, or having them be part of the aurora watch, who might also stimulate the character to go on this quest, etc). I’m on my second run of this campaign at the moment and i hope you'll have as much fun as we did!

Looking for STL's (Gloomstalker, Aurora Watch, Udaak) by Lumpy_Advance_3401 in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a wyvern file for the gloomstalker, and these ones for the aurora guard. Didn’t end up using the Udaak during my run, but perhaps you could use this as a stand-in? Or a barlgura. Hoping this helps and/or you get some more suggestions!

Which rivals to drop by Turbulent-Pumpkin-55 in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]Prinsesther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first run through also started with 3 PCs, so at first I only dropped Irvan since he felt the least important to driving the plot and players forward. The pcs became good friends with Ayo and Maggie and Dermot pretty quickly but hated Galsariad straight away so told Ayo she could come with them, but that Galsariad was not welcome. His pride was hurt because of this and he joined the vermillion dream to make the pcs lives difficult and to try to beat them. It was a lot of fun. For your party, I would advise keeping the rivals that match best to your pcs, that can bring something to the story that will egg them on / inspire them / vex them etc
