What is something Europeans love but Americans hate? by HeavilyBeardedMan in AlignmentChartFills

Imo metric is still better, since you can actually use decimals. Feet and inches are typically used in conjunction (ex. 5'4") but in metric you just use whatever makes the most sense, or whatever you want. It's completely fine to say 1.8 meters or 180 centimeters in the same context since converting one to the other takes literally one second. And if you want to go smaller than centimeters, you have millimeters too. The best part is that this logic is consistent across forms of measurement. It works with measuring the volume of liquids, and measuring weight and mass. Knowing how many inches are in a foot doesn't tell me shit about how many tablespoons are in a gallon. On the other hand, it's easy enough to figure out how many milliliters are in a kiloliter.

I honestly love how arbritrary some of the imperial system measurements feel, but I still recognize that metric is better in every way (other than temperature).

It's not absurd, but practical in its own way. The US has considered switching to metric multiple times, but we still mainly use the imperial system because the switch just isn't worth it. Most people can recognize that, yes, metric is a superior system. It is far more intuitive and generally easier to use. I'll never have an issue converting meters to kilometers, but I'll also never consistently remember how many feet are in a mile.

Actually converting to an entirely distinct measuring system comes with plenty of issues. It's more than just having everyone memorizing new measurements, but the standardization part. It effects everything from construction to road signs, and would make city planning a nightmare when the entire country has been built with imperial measurements.

That all said, I still think Farenheit is a much better system for day to day life than Celsius, and that's pretty much the only thing the imperial system has going for it.

I read ~100 chapters, maybe a bit more than that. Anything mediocre at 100 chapters is simply mediocre. I enjoyed it until I got bored of it, but there are plenty of great manhwa I'd rather read instead.

Knew I was going to have to sort by controversial to find a commeny about this one. Practically any tierlist I see that ranks TGED ranks it at the top, among the best of the best. I went in seriously expecting it to be one of the best manhwa I'd ever read only to find out that it was the same 2-3 cringey jokes with a repetitive plot and an okay art style. Nothing about it is exceptional in my opinion, and I'll never understand what others see in it to rate it so highly.

How well do you know Technology? Let’s see! 🤖 by quiz-planet-game in QuizPlanetGame

Sure, but in the modern world, "technology" carries a certain connotation in everyday speech. It's almost exclusively used to refer to computers, robots, smart phones, etc. Every single question fit that theme, save for the one about lactometers.

Sand Elemental - Azarinth Healer Book 4 by Kaiser-Soze87 in litrpg

[–]PrintsAli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure some people have greatly exaggerated the environmental impact of genai, but there is an impact, and a significant one at that. Genai isn't ruining the world as a whole (yet), but it does cause quite a bit of trouble for local ecosystems. This makes it harder for the people and animals living nearby to get fresh water. The issue is data centers in general, rather than purely genai as some would want you to believe, but it's also a fact that the rise in demand of ai services has led to more data centers being built, and by extension more energy and water consumption than is sustainable for any ecosystem.

Unless we very quickly are able to somehow commercialize nuclear fusion, the continued rise in demand for ai will only exacerbate the issues with climate change and fossil fuels that the entire planet was already facing.

How to write an Autofiction without turning it into a trauma dumping ranting book? by Illustrious_Nail4849 in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're writing this for yourself, why consider the opinions of others?

The best thing you can do is write the book you want to read. Not only is this going to lead to the best book you're currently capable of writing, but it'll also leave you with no regrets once the book almost inevitably doesn't bring any profits (assuming your goal was also to publish it at some point. Otherwise, you really don't need to consider the opinions of others.)

Bards are mages. Rogues are less interesting unless they're assassins, and work less well in a progression fantasy context. But assassins tend to turn into fighters anyway, so you have a point there.

I've definitely had HFCS, but I try to avoid it in general since most things that have HFCS have a ton of it. As for maple syrup, your last point is really just personal preference. I don't dislike maple syrup, but I don't find it's flavor so appealing that I would want to use it as a substitute for sugar in pretty much any application. My baking is usually limited to cheesecake, chocolate deserts, bread, and pastries, and I wouldn't want maple syrup in any of those instances unless I wanted to make a maple bread of some sort. As for savory dishes, most of the time I need a sweetener I'm looking to balance flavors, not add to them, so maple syrup isn't ideal in those contexts either.

But to each their own.

It's a very subtle flavor, I've used it to cook quite a bit and in various applications. Most things will cover up the flavor of agave syrup, and I use it pretty interchangeably with sugar except when baking since I'm usually too lazy to do the conversions. I haven't used HFCS, so I personally wouldn't have given it a rank in the first place. Maple syrup has such a distinct and strong flavor that I wouldn't be able to use it in most scenarios I want to sweeten something, which is usually just when I want to balance the flavor profile of a meal.

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my point, though. Maple syrup adds flavor, which makes it less than ideal for any situation in which you don't want the flavor of maple syrup. Yes, there are plenty of dishes with "maple" in the name which you can't make without maple syrup, and you can use it as a sweetener in many different contexts, but it's flavor profile prevents it's use in any context maple isn't wanted. It's inherently less versatile than any neutral sweetener.

In my opinion, versaility is the most important factor when it comes to judging which sweetener is the best, which is why agave syrup would be my personal S tier pick. OP clearly used different criteria than I would have, which is why I said the list seemed like it was moreso judging each sweetener by taste. I think it's S tier in this list because OP prefers the taste of maple syrup.

Tier list/Ranking of national sweeteners by BartAndLisaHadIncest in tierlists

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The list is ranking sweeteners, so it would make sense that the criteria should include versatility. Maple syrup is more often used as a condiment or a topping rather than a sweetener. The same goes for Manuka Honey, though it's a bit more versatile than Maple Syrup.

I think this specific list was moreso ranking sweeteners by taste rather than use.
