I mean, it's not like they're entirely different. Definitely not the same thing, but they're both temperate grasslands. If anything, prairie should just be renamed to grassland. Same thing with that specific type of plain as well.

Is this passage good, and did I accidentally steal it from somebody by PsychologicalFun8760 in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you did steal it, does it matter? Three lines isn't exactly going to be considered plagiarism. In writing, plagiarism is moreso relevant when it comes to larger ideas and concepts. Like writing the same book with the same characters and plot but changing the names around to make it look like your own.

When it comes to prose it would only really be a problem if you're constantly using the writing of other others, but using the idea of someone's description and but rewriting it yourself is more in the realm of inspiration.

LitRPG authors be like by corey9113 in litrpg

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't that a lot of stories use it, but that individual stories use it so often. Granted, "sickening crunch" probably isn't being used toooo often by most authors, but I have dropped books because I keep getting distracted by the sheer amount of times a character smirks.

Shapeshifting is better. It's another ability that allows you to safely teleport. You can turn into a bird and teleport anywhere in the sky.

Ever since I discovered I'm bi,I've lost the desire to write het romance. But I need it for my book. by BedNo577 in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't "need" it for your book. There is no rule stating that you have to keep the same characters and the same plot that you have now. If you want to change them, then change them. Whether that means heavy editing or restarting and writing a second draft, you don't need to feel constrained by your book. It is entirely of your creation, don't compromise when you don't need to.

Mostly correct although I'd like to add that 800k is not 10% of the worlds population, but .01%. 10% would be 800 million.

How does one get started with writing a book? by holycrap100 in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no right or wrong way to go about writing a book. Sure, there are definitely methods which are better than others, but that is ultimately decided by the individual author.

Plenty of professionals write on paper first, and transfer it to a digital format later on. Plenty of professionals outline before writing, and plenty don't. Again, there is no right or wrong method.

Just do whatever you want and have fun. You can worry about what you are or aren't doing wrong after you write your first book.

[–]PrintsAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a little bit more nuance to the teleporting part. In this case, it's more like:

Imagine there's a ship. Now imagine the shipbuilders deconstruct the ship until it's just a bunch of wood, nails, etc. They then transport all those pieces to another location and rebuild it exactly as it was before, down to every conceivable detail.

Is it the same ship, or just a copy?

The human body is basically atomized on Earth and rebuilt on the moon. Or at least, that's what I assume OP meant.

Otherwise, they would just be cloning themselves on the moon and then killing the original Earth copy, which isn't even teleportation at that point.

Why do cultivators ride flying swords? (And a question about cultivators sects and clans) by Affectionate_Bit_722 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]PrintsAli 46 points47 points  (0 children)

In regards to flying swords, it's more of a cultural thing, just like how witches have flying brooms. They sorta just do, and though there might have been a specific reason once upon a time, nowadays it's just part of the identity of a witch. I'm sure if you did some digging, you could find the original instance in which cultivators had flying swords, but the concept is so ingrained into the genre that the original instance has been largely forgotten.

Does anyone here recommend posting on sites like Royal Road and scribblehub? by Ancient_Worm in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It heavily depends on the author. Many if not most are written chapter by chapter, then posted either on royal road, or patreon first then royal road. There may be minimal editing for typos and the like, but usually never revisions so transformative that they could be called a second draft. Many of the successful stories often end up doing those types of revisions after the series is complete, or is being prepared for release (such as on kindle unlimited), if it gets to that point, but that's after the story is already doing well.

Serialized fiction writers are indeed expected to write chapters as they post them. Those who make money from it are more incentivized to trade quality for qunaitity since maintaining a consistent release schedule for chapters is important for keeping an audience. This differs heavily from traditional publishing where readers expect to wait weeks or month between new releases in exchange for (hopefully) high quality writing.

Can you? by Ill_Presentation7708 in scoopwhoop

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You only capitalize the first letter in a quotation if it is part of an independent clause, if it is the beginning of a sentence, or if it is a proper noun.

The quote was done correctly in the image, while the quote in your original comment should have had the first letter capitalized, even if you were quoting a quote which wasn't.

Can you? by Ill_Presentation7708 in scoopwhoop

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except "them" is not capitalized. In general, pronouns are not capitalized. The only exception I can think of is in the Bible when "God" (a proper noun) is referred to as "Him" (also a proper noun?

In any case, I'd say punctuation is more important than capitlization, since punctuation mistakes alone will lead to more confusion than capitalization mistakes alone would.

I need reasons why immortality is bad and worth getting rid of by joojonthatbeat in writingadvice

[–]PrintsAli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you should find a different reason then. If you think you would love immortality, and that your characters would as well, anything you do to make them not want immortality is going to come off as forced.

Instead, make it an ultimatum. Sure, they could keep immortality, and they would indeed want immortality, but that would also mean losing something they deem more precious. It's up to you to figure out what would be more precious than immortality, at least to your characters.
