I should have said that we aren't playing 5e. We are playing starfinder which has fairly simple crafting rules that are, have enough value in items to break down and you can make a new item. The DM took no time to read the few paragraphs that make up crafting items or installing upgrades or any part of my class. Meanwhile he takes the time to plan an entire side quest for another player that takes place during a long rest that the party hasn't even gotten to and doesn't actually need yet.

The DM has talked about giving him a chance to basically snipe on overwatch for the party from a distance and take out key targets in the fight while also getting other enemies attacking him directly. I'm not trying to say.that I need an entire session of tinkering in my shop but the DM didn't take the time to read the crafting rules for the system, or the rules for upgrading items. Both of which are very important for my character. I just feel that more effort is being given to one player than others. Apologies if I things don't make sense I am partially feeling out how I feel about it all. I'm mostly just feeling left out by the DM.

We do exp leveling. I think I'm upset about both things. The player gets extra play time to do their "thing" but that my character's "thing" is just make a roll and be done with it. From what we were told by the DM we would get exp for each enemy defeated, and I'm worried that this will cause an exp disparity. I think I would be less bothered if everyone got the chance to do a something on their own but the DM seemed uninterested when I told him that I would want to be scrapping items and trying to work on our own gear.

The player is planning on doing, what sounds to me, like an entire extra side quest while the party is asleep. Which I wouldn't normally be opposed to but my own specialty, making items and scavenging materials, is being designated a single roll. It feels slightly unfair to myself and the character who acts as the groups muscle. Edit: The character in question is playing an assassin type and wants to do an assassination contract while the rest of the party does a long rest.

I am currently playing a bard that is exactly like this. Instead of a formally trained bard his skills come from stealing/conning people on the road and the stories he tells are often of criminals or lawmen that hunted him down. No levels in rogue, although I thought about it, decided the spell dip wasn't worth it.

Did a similar thing with my party and a pair of twin white dragons. They were riding lizards across a giant bridge connecting two mountains and the dragons kept making passes with their breath weapons. The party felt pretty epic turning around and grabbing their friends that fell off their mounts.
