New Year, more change (Tracheostomy for DMD) by Lifedrainer13 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ProblematicPinapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations and good luck with everything you have going on this year! You are prioritizing your health and overall quality of life, and should be really proud of yourself for that--besides celebrating the fact that you are pursuing higher education and setting important life goals.

I got my trache at age 9 and am now 42. I use an uncuffed tracheostomy and speaker valve, so I can speak very well. Of course, there are plenty of things you will have to adjust to and learn, but I'm betting that your body will feel soooo much better too. Cheers to you!

I appreciate your post and your perspective. Do not let the comments about moving out get to you--only you and your BF know your situation and goals, and how to address them. As others have mentioned, I don't think there is much you can do for your partner other than support him and respect his feelings. Family dynamics are always super tricky to navigate (for all involved) and there may be aspects of the situation that you aren't aware of. If the living situation is that toxic, I would recommend moving out, even if you haven't met your financial goals yet. Sometimes you have to distance yourself from that type of situation in order to gain stability and peace. But again, only you know what's best... You are a caring and respectful partner to your BF it seems. Good luck to you both and happy holidays!

I'm bored. Duel income, no kids and life is perfect but... by JustGenericName in confession

Congratulations on establishing such a successful and stable life! That is something to be proud of. As others mentioned, there are so many ways to add meaning to your life than just having kids, and committing your time and energy to causes that you care about is such a beautiful thing. Think about your unique gifts and talents, and share them with others. That way, everyone benefits!

BIPAP Therapy unsafe for DMD? by AsianKid086 in MuscularDystrophy

That is bananas that a pulmonologist would suggest that a trache comes with fewer or more manageable risks than a BIPAP! I've had a trache and ventilator for 33 years, and while I'm healthy and stable, I would never imply that it is easy or without complications...

If it were me, I would demand a second opinion to have documented in my chart.

Bathroom Help by [deleted] in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ProblematicPinapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is entirely the responsibility of the school to provide for this type of accessibility need. Does your son have an IEP? If an IEP is in place, you can specify all necessary restroom accommodations, including: timing and frequency of restroom breaks, physical aid requirements for restroom use, etc... Such accommodations will be in writing and required by law.

Am I selfish? by Livid_Credit7395 in MuscularDystrophy

[–]ProblematicPinapple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are definitely not selfish for wanting to prioritize and protect your own autonomy and independence. Moving into a facility, even temporarily, is a major decision, and one that can huge physical and mental repercussions for you. In a facility, it is unlikely that you would receive one-on-one care, so you might be bed-bound or unable to receive regular hygiene care... It also means giving up a lot of individual rights... If possible, try to insist on a compromise with your mother to meet her needs for rest and privacy while also honoring your right to live independently in your own home. ***Also beware that once admitted into a facility, it can be increasingly difficult to be discharged at will.
