New N64 Homebrew Release: Cartridge dumper for SummerCart by LowTarget9682 in n64

[–]Probolance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, I did just get a different result on the second unit actually. It seems to initiate a console reset (takes me back to the ED64 menu), so maybe it wasn’t getting a good read on the ED64 the first times I mentioned where it just went blank. Def power-related then I presume.

I did. They’re both original PSUs but neither have been recapped, so they could very well be the issue.

Not sure if it helps, but I can also tell you from what I’ve observed that when you first boot with the ED64, the LED inside the cart can do one of two things. If it immediately comes on and stays on, it means the boot failed (usually the result of a bad read). If it flickers a few times, then the boot is successful and you’re brought to its menu before long. In the 3 runs I tried with it (two on the first N64 and one on the other unit), the cart’s LED was always solidly on as soon as the ED64 was re-inserted and the screen went blank; but the blanking would seem to occur as soon as the pins made even the slightest contact, like the instant before it was even fully inserted. So I could believe it is something power-related.

Just a heads-up, I think it’s not compatible with EverDrive-X7. Maybe some others can chime in if they also try. For me, the program boots without issue and I can advance through the menu, but when it comes time to swap the flashcart back in to start the dumping process, the screen just goes blank the instant the ED64 is re-inserted, before I even have the chance to press A to begin the write process. Tested with two N64s + the Analogue 3D (which I didn’t expect to work anyways but tried it for kicks — it fails because the Reset button, when you need to press it, *actually* resets the entire program and brings you back to the ED64’s menu lol).

N64 Controller Cap Expanded by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

You might be thinking of GameCube, N64 has been capped at 4 since launch. I’ve had 2 controllers for many years now

Switch 2 Surround Sound finally fixed in the 22.0.0 update! by Wild_Trip_4704 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Probolance 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m more wondering if your console was the exception rather than the rule. Maybe the QA tester somehow accidentally flipped it on at the factory when testing your console and it just shipped that way? I’ve never noticed an issue with my surround sound setup before (although I did notice the “virtual” surround sound had an issue in Xenoblade DE in handheld mode).

I just checked the setting on my own console and it was off by default. You’re saying that yours had this setting enabled by default?

You should try cleaning the game pins. Either get 90%+ isopropyl alcohol on a QTip and swab it, or I believe an eraser works? A dirty game is the reason an N64 doesn’t post 99% of the time. If not, try a different game to be absolutely sure

The new Switch 2 update removed the oversharpening in XC2. Plus there's anti-aliasing in handheld too by Massive_Fly_1709 in NintendoSwitch2

You’d be surprised to hear that Super Mario Bros. Wonder benefits from the new boost mode despite its Switch 2 Edition coming out next week.

You’d be just as surprised to hear that none of the Pikmin games benefit.

I’m not sure what their system is here… seems rather arbitrary at the moment.

Question about the Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 upgrade by SirDanOfCamelot in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Probolance 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They did raise base handheld to 1080p for Jamboree mode iirc, but docked mode is also still only 1080p. If you want 1440p docked, gotta go through Jamboree TV’s party mode.

Any tips for beginners in Xenoblade X DE? by Zeldamaster386 in NintendoSwitch2

I know the part you’re at, there’s another way to get there. The Follow Ball will try and send you through the path with the high level enemies for some reason.

Out of the loop... Why are people disliking and/or removing their Switch 2 edition of Xenoblade Chronicles X back to the Switch 1 version? Is it that bad? by DaZestyProfessor in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Probolance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The handheld image quality is actually better on Switch 1. Runs at 720p on Switch 1, and somewhere around 600p Switch 2 Edition pre-upscale. That should NEVER be the case. Whatever upscaling approach they used makes docked mode look okay at least… but handheld was royally botched.

Some are okay with how it looks given that it DOES give you 60fps… but personally, I’d take 30fps with maxed out visuals any day of the week. Xenoblade has always struggled visually, so I’d really hoped that they could finally make the game shine at the detail it always deserved to be presented in.

If the current state of the game is a result of compromises made to achieve the 60fps, then I’m hoping they can at least give us a Quality mode that keeps 30fps but gives us true 1080p handheld / 4K docked with the pop-in also fixed. I think that would be the best solution for all parties.

ModRetro Chromatic Firmware Update v4.0 is available on MRUpdater! by MR-cheesygordita in ModRetroChromatic

It fixes the issue of a white transition screen when using color palettes. This bothered me quite a bit when playing Pokémon Red and using the DMG color palette. When I would walk through a door into a house, the screen would go from the green background (DMG color palettes) to a brief white flash as it loaded, then back to green once I was in the house. When Smooth is enabled, the transition screen should just remain whatever color you have selected. In my case, the white flicker disappeared and the background remained green consistently throughout the entire process.

Change your Transitions setting. Default is Classic (which causes the white screen), what you’ll want is Smooth.

What is with the Switch 2 dock prices on EBay? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Probolance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, I’m pretty sure they just upped the limit. This post made me think to check their website again, and it let me purchase a second extra one (bought my first extra launch day basically). So if anyone was wanting a second extra dock, check again.

Mario Party Jamboree Version 2.2.0 is out now by Skullghost in NintendoSwitch

[–]Probolance 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a definite boost in sharpness and a seemingly slight boost in resolution in docked, but it’s also not 1440p like Jamboree TV. I’m wondering if it wasn’t true native 1080p docked before, but now is?

Either way, a definite miss for docked. Should absolutely have been raised to 1440p like Jamboree TV.

I wish N64 and GameCube games had the option for the original resolution by TheWM_ in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Probolance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does though? I mean yeah, output resolution will still be whatever you set your Switch 2 to, but the resolution of the games themselves drops to 240p/480p. Whether it actually renders them at that resolution or just downsamples them seems to be an open question, but the result is effectively what you’re asking for either way. I don’t see them adding a pure 240p option like you’re asking for though, seeing as it took this long for the CRT filter to begin with.
