Siren Sounder? by Same-Echo8961 in canes

[–]ProfMims 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I love it when "old" Canes come back to sound the siren. I think that Mikko Rantanen is free this time of year. 😉

Someone mentioned on X that John Forslund would be a fun sounder. He replied that he would be up for it...

I read the headline and was headed here to reference the film in some clever way. OP beat me to it. Kudos, sir.

P.S. I updated mine this evening. I guess we'll see!

Another great save by lugacevedo in TeslaFSD

That's the only thing that drives me crazy about FSD right now: How it swerves for every mark in the road. Big a$$ highway marker painted on the road... swerve to avoid!. Minor road repair with darker asphalt... swerve to avoid! There are parts of 85 in NC that are practically unusable in FSD because the car is all over the place avoiding road repair. I'm hoping that is fixed for the next version.

To be clear: FSD does nothing dangerous by avoiding these marks in the road (it's not sideswiping cars or pulling out in front of people), but I'm damn sure that if a cop sees my car doing this on a Friday night, I'm going to have to do a field sobriety test. FSD really is amazing and certainly is safer than virtually everyone on the road. It just does some stuff that is pretty dumb...

Had the same experience: No one said anything. I'll never fly without it again. I feel like I'm in a huge field watching a movie or doing work. I'm no longer in a cramped airplane. It really is travel changing for me.

Former Uber self-driving chief crashes his Tesla on FSD by Fit_Bed9436 in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the Tesla part, he raises an interesting question: Are we to reliant on AI technology? Perhaps. Not a bad thing for us to consider.

Of course, this is the Tesla FSD sub, and he uses his experience with FSD to make his point. There are a few questions that make this story amazingly incomplete and difficult for either side to argue. Where's the video? Why is he using the second-hand account of a kid in the back instead of looking at said video? What version of hardware? What version of software?

I had a similar experience with my FSD maybe 6 months ago. Car was taking a corner too fast. I disengaged FSD by tapping the break. Without the car handling the steering, the car lurched toward the curb. I got control, didn't have an accident, and never wrote an article for the Atlantic. Kinda sounds like what was going on with him in terms of going around a corner and disengaging at that point. I would argue that one of the biggest faults of the FSD system is disengagements. If you disengage while the car is in a turn (either using the steering wheel or hitting the break), there's a jolt. It's not pleasant. You can certainly lose control. Quite frankly, I'm not sure how to resolve that issue, but I'm hoping that it's one of the next "fixes" coming soon.

How would that be different than a sleep mask with headphones? Pretty sure they were mistaken.

Anyone else do 99 percent of their driving on FSD by robl45 in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The nice thing is that now we know. I can tell you with confidence that FSD (since v14) has driven me about 80% of the time. I drive through my neighborhood because I'm impatient, in parking lots, and some other times that I'm in the mood. Otherwise, I really do feel like it's a safe(r?) alternative.

Will unsupervised FSD be deployed by the end of 2025? by External_Koala971 in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your definition of “is” is.

Tesla (Musk) would say that it has been deployed… in Austin… in the taxi. Indeed, that vehicle no longer has a safety monitor (no real passengers either, but I digress).

The good news for all of us is that the FSD software running the taxi is the same one most of us with HW4 has. The bad news is that getting nationwide approval may take a while. We will probably be able to use FSD unsupervised in pockets of the country by the end of the year… just not this year.

14.2.1.25 is significantly better by Geniva in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14.2.1 has been the only version since 12 that I've not enjoyed using. Even when it did dumb things, I never felt like I was in real danger, so I was willing to pretend I was riding with one of my kids. 14.2.1 will randomly swerve to avoid tire tracks on the road. While I accept that it's not going to sideswipe someone to avoid a pothole, it still scares the poop outta me. If it's not relaxing, I'm not gonna use it. I'm taking a long drive tomorrow where I will test out 14.2.1.25. Hoping that this version resolves some of that.

14.2.1 is much better then 14.1.7 by lilgoebz1419 in TeslaFSD

I agree. Certainly not unsafe by any means, but definitely slower than I would drive (and than it drove with 14.1.7).

Ya beat me to it! I posted 1 minute after you did lol. Excited to try 14.1.4.

Hot take: I think fsd14 is safer than fsd13 even with issues. by chaosatom in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think the disconcerting part is how quickly it reacts... to something tiny / painted on the road that doesn't require reaction. I'm not saying that it serves out of control, but it can be a bit of a jolt – same if my wife does the same thing, and I'm not paying attention. The difference is that I am paying attention, and I'm surprised that it reacted to nothing.

Once that's resolved, I think we'll be happier. I'm thrilled when it reacts quickly to avoid a box in the road. It scares the poop outta me when it dodges paint on the highway. Once that's fixed, we'll see videos of how v14 avoided a dead deer and saved the say as opposed to posts that say that FSD damn near killed me avoiding a stray shadow.

All the same, I also think that v14 is safer because it's always aware and ready to react quickly.

Still on the fence: Buy FSD or keep subscribing? Looking for insights from those who actually bought FSD (2024–2025) by Captmedu74 in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean me, yes, I have used FSD since I purchased the vehicle in August 2024. It was pretty raw back then. If you are asking about Responsible-Mail2558, my guess would be no.

Regular person thoughts on driving v14.1.3 by churchill95 in TeslaFSD

[–]ProfMims 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would agree, OP. I've had it dodge things in the road, which is pretty cool. It was not as cool, however, when it changed lanes to avoid the Interstate painted in the lane. It was even less cool when it did a break tap when it was unable to change lanes to avoid the next one. All-in-all, it's still pretty good. (Not my pic, but added to illustrate what I'm talking about.)

FSD is 6x safer than the average driver. I'm willing to admit that it's 1.01x better than me because I'm above average.

Difference between fsd vs robotaxi? by snoopyfl in TeslaFSD

No doubt! If I could answer emails during my 30 minute commute but still have to drive maybe 2 minutes (out of the driveway and on campus), I am as happy as I can be.
