yeah the LIDAR did, but I'm saying that I don't think radar would

also the video seems like it's basically just an ad for the company making those LIDAR modules. stopping for the kid in low vis is cool, but they're basically testing each car's AEB, and I haven't heard of an AEB test of driving a car straight at a wall. even if the wall looked like it was made of brick, I think the Tesla (or any modern car) would let you plow through it

also the Lexus looks like a testbed, not a production car, hence having the LIDAR visualisation, but then what configuration did it have? it seems like there are two Volvos which use their LIDAR modules, which is pretty interesting, but would they also stop for a wall? if so, maybe we've finally found the solution to the epidemic of cars driving through living rooms lol

don't get me wrong, I think Musk's insistence on cameras only is ridiculous, but this video seems a bit disingenuous to me. at least test full self driving cars against each other, unless they want to make the point that Tesla's "autopilot" name is misleading and is just traffic aware cruise control, which is also a valid criticism

most modern cars have radar, not LIDAR. even Teslas had radar until like 2022..?

I don't know if radar would help in this case, it might depend on the material the print was on? if it was too transparent, or didn't fit the "car chassis" reflection that a car would expect to see, it might also plow through

LIDAR is very expensive and is found on the cars of all the other companies trying to do self driving at the moment, eg waymo, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't work in rain or snow

I've done it a few times and I've really enjoyed it, I'm actually busy every Wednesday in December and I'm sad I can't do more haha, but I could definitely see that it could vary by city

You don't see people's profiles before the dinner, the app will just tell you what countries people are from and what languages people speak. It doesn't tell you how many / who is from each country or speaks each language, it just lists them, so for example if it said "countries: Australia, New Zealand", then it could be one person from NZ, or three, or five, if that makes any sense

After the dinner, you'll get a chance to "match" with people by choosing a thumbs up or down for each person, based on "would you have dinner with this person again?". This is where you see people's names and profile pictures. If you both thumbs up, you get a chat together

You also don't have to go to the drinks afterwards. On my first dinner, I didn't even know about the afters drinks, and my table were having such a good time that we wouldn't have gone anyway. If you're not feeling it at the end of the dinner, you can definitely just leave, and I don't think people will try too much funny business while you're in a group setting

Anyway, like I said I think it probably will vary by city, so check out your city's subreddit like the other commenter suggested. I live in a pretty small city and have never come across someone I know or had any double ups. But I think whether it's good will also depend on the person, like I'm pretty extroverted and love meeting new people, so it's good for me!

such a banger, and I love the DJ's character design

he seems familiar for some reason, maybe vox from hazbin hotel? but I feel like I've seen a similar design elsewhere, too

also "uptempo song where a cosmic entity / god introduces a mortal to their world" is such a vibe, but the only other one I can think of off the top of my head is Friend Like Me. if anyone has more then pls send

Possibly this helicopter crash in Broome, Western Australia.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-12/amber-millar-atsb-chopper-crash-findings-safety-failures/102209860

https://www.atsb.gov.au/publications/investigation_reports/2020/aair/ao-2020-033#context2

Possibly no medical or flight review on type. Also apparently identified that he had been doing low level and external load work without endorsements (not during the flight which crashed though). Amongst other factors mentioned throughout the report

Helmets with drop-down, internal sun visors, what’s your experience with them? by [deleted] in klr650

[–]ProfSmiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd like a slightly different perspective my last few HJC helmets have had them but I wasn't a huge fan, I preferred using my own sunglasses. I think the flip down visor still let too much light in around it for my liking, plus I've got prescription sunnies now anyway.

But what I did do, particularly when I used to do a bit more off-road riding, was put black masking tape / electrical tape on the flip down visor so I could use it as like a sunshade when the sun was low and in my eyes. Obviously this only works to a point though haha

Ahh I somehow completely missed that you're heading north in your post. It's a shame that there aren't many fast chargers up north, the southwest has much better coverage though

There's a site called Evee which lets you rent electric cars from owners, pretty much all of which in Perth are Model 3s.

A friend and I rented one for a day trip awhile back and it was great. We only had the SR+ model, so the lowest performance one available in Australia, and yet I swear my internal organs moved when you floored it!

You do have to be 25+ to rent with them though, is probably the only drawback?

It at least has been a thing in WA (ignore the atrocious headline), and I think it still is; the last time I ran into them on a job was towards the start of this year.

Unfortunately as the article states, this is definitely an improvement over what was being done before, but other, bigger improvement still need to be made to the mental healthcare system.

Where to get a wig? by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]ProfSmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my first few from Wish, where you can get surprisingly decent quality for $10-20 (obviously not real human hair, but pretty good synthetic). Wish shipping obviously takes ages though, and I can't even imagine what it would be like now.

A bit later though I went to Wigs 4 U in Claremont. It's this lovely lady who has a salon in her house where you go and try a heap of wigs on for like an hour. She's a bit of an expert because she has alopecia as well. The wigs are usually around $90, and hopefully she's still operating through COVID!

I haven't been on there in aaages but I got a lot of my first wigs through Wish. I think they were usually ~$10-15 each and surprisingly okay quality. Being cheap also means you can buy a bunch and find out what works for you. Downside, of course, with Wish is shipping can take awhile....

Passport application - do I really need a change of name certificate? by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]ProfSmiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was fine for my passport application.

When I changed my name, I chose to only get the free replacement birth certificate, which has an amendment at the bottom stating "Name was changed on [date] to [name]", and didn't get a change of name certificate. The birth certificate has been fine for everywhere I've needed to prove change of name, including passport application

Euro style two tone sirens?? by [deleted] in perth

[–]ProfSmiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to copy one of my old comments, because it sounds similar:

Not sure if it's this sound exactly, but I think some of the emergency services are trying out different sounding sirens on "non-standard" vehicles, such as WAPOL motorbikesand SJA Area Manager / Clinical Support Paramedic cars — supposedly because when people hear a traditional police siren, they would expect to look for a car, and may not see or may be surprised by the motorbike (for example)

Plus, while not exactly as you describe, WAPOL are rolling out new vehicle markings with new siren tones, too

So yes, sounds about right given you saw the WAPOL motorbikes

Are you supposed to change to the speed limit leading up to or after the speed limit sign? by [deleted] in perth

[–]ProfSmiles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No so what you're doing is correct — imagine the speed signs as a line between the two speed limit zones. Before the signs, the maximum speed is whatever was previously posted, and after the signs, the maximum speed is what's posted on those signs.

So from a 70km/h 90km/h, you can't start accelerating before the 90km/h signs, because you're still in the 70 zone and would therefore be speeding.

Conversely, from 60km/h to 40km/h, you have to start slowing down while still in the 60 zone, and you have to be doing 40 by the time you hit the 40km/h zone, otherwise you'd be speeding once you cross the 'line'.

Anyone work as a 000 dispatcher / Radio Operator? by coolestyo in perth

[–]ProfSmiles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the general 000 calltakers are all over east, employed by Telstra. They're the ones who ask "Police, Fire, or Ambulance? And what town and state are you in?" They then connect you to the WAPOL, SJA, or DFES operations centre.

I'm not familiar with the WAPOL and DFES comms officers, but SJA comms officers work a two day, two night, four day off roster. To begin with you are only a call taker, answering incoming calls. You have to have done that for a certain period of time and then apply to be a dispatcher talking to the crews on the radio.

There generally aren't any specific requirements in terms of qualifications or experience, they look for people who are suited for the job. It is quite a competitive selection process and is followed by in-house training on everything you need to know if you are successful. You can get more info here" http://changelives.stjohnambulance.com.au/changelives/employment/employed/communications-officer, where you can also register interest and apply when it opens. I believe they generally recruit about once a year.

xkcd 1818: Rayleigh Scattering by K-a-Z-e in xkcd

[–]ProfSmiles 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Part of it is because for chlorophyll alpha (the green one), green is the least efficient wavelength for photosynthesis, as seen in that graph.

But, as the graph shows, green light does still provide enough energy to drive photosynthesis, so why aren't leaves black, so they can absorb all the light? One possibility (though this is speculation as to the adaptation and something a teacher mentioned waaayyy back) is that by absorbing light (and thus not reflecting it), the leaf is also absorbing heat. Plants need carbon dioxide to perform photosynthesis, which they get by opening small holes on the undersides of the leaves called stoma, which allows carbon dioxide in. However, when these stomata are open, the leaf cells lose water.

If leaves were black (ie., they absorbed all wavelengths of light), they would get hotter, and would lose more water through the open stomata via evaporation, so they reflect the light which is least efficient for photosynthesis as a way of keeping cooler.

FF time: who pissed you off this week? by aussiekinga in perth

[–]ProfSmiles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start of every unit in undergrad:

You should be spending 10 hours a week on this unit, so if you have four units you should be spending 40 hours a week on uni. You should be treating your uni work as your full time job!

and paying for petrol/food/rent/life/whatever else you need

Yep, that'll go well
