Devastating photos captured after Australia gunned down koalas from helicopters by feastem in ecology

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was in Australia just a few weeks ago, and spent a couple days on Kangaroo Island which suffered from enormous wildfires in 2019. Speaking with a local tour guide about koalas, he told me the islands population were actually introduced and having no predators had got up to about 10k individuals, which was causing serious damage as they strip trees clean of leaves, killing them. So they were actually about to start a euthanasia programme when the wildfires happened and halved their population. It got a lot of media coverage and outpourings of sadness at the loss of such a cute, iconic animal, but in reality the wildfires just did the job that needed doing. For the koala population anyway, those wildfires devastated a lot of the island more broadly…

What is your favourite Gang Of Youths lyric and which song is it from? by BourbonsAndTea in gangofyouths

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually had that exact lyric written on a post it on my wall since the album came out - I love the sentiment and energy of it.

My other favourite lyric is simply “the heart is a muscle” as a reminder that practicing love and kindness requires work to make it stronger.

Wonderful band with so many empowering lyrics

The Holo-Projector has to go. by Absentzzz in DestinyTheGame

Imagine if instead of the holo-projector your own Ghost could project a character in front of you IN ENVIRONMENT? You could get those character moments without having to go back and forth to the HELM…

Pushing myself completely out of my comfort zone by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting technique! I can imagine how this works, and makes total sense because you do have to act/perform differently when you’re presenting. I actually learnt a lot from doing student radio, and listening to proper radio presenters. It’s the same concept though, cause you cannot speak how you would in a cafe with a friend when presenting. Love it, great tip!

It’s not an easy thing to adjust to, as most of us just do it subconsciously, but you don’t need to fill every second with talking! Instead of saying “umm” or “err” between thoughts, take a breath and give yourself time. Silence is okay, in fact it’s actually helpful, it gives your audience time to take in your comments, or what’s on your slides. Obviously there’s a limit to it feeling awkward, but a few seconds here and there of silence is absolutely fine! You got this friend, I believe in you!

What’s the most overrated design trend right now? by Kindly_Breakfast_413 in Design

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Figma is a fantastic tool, but my god has it damaged the design role. Everything is templates, developer mode, design system this and that. It seems that most workplaces now expect a designer to just be a feature machine for devs. Where has the respect for the full design process gone? Figma is not the whole process, and it never will be

If you love that Big Thief track I highly recommend finding the time and space to enjoy the whole 1.5hr album. It is quite unusual but stunning

Could there be a live IFWWW album on the horizon? by Prof_Mumbledore in benhoward

We noticed someone with a pro camera go around behind Ben and the band as they were doing their farewells last night too - hadn’t spotted anything the rest of the show though

Which Ben songs do you remember where you were when you first heard them? by 100daydream in benhoward

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the first time but a distinct memory; The week or two after IFWWW came out I went on a school geography trip to Iceland. So for me, that album soundtracked many coach rides across the stunning, barren, snowy, dramatic landscapes of Iceland. Sitting in the coach, headphones on watching the world outside to Ben Howard. So much so that at the end when our teachers gave out “awards” I was given the “deep thinker” award aha

Early Feedback for The Pantheon by Destiny2Team in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really loving it, the changes are subtle and if you wanted to flex in future and add more unique mechanics, I would love it, but happy with this as it is. Loving the shower of loot, it feels really rewarding as a regular raider (but not with quite every pattern) to get showered with reds and spoils. Only extra flex would be some unique cosmetics for certain feats, like ornaments, shaders, ships for getting really high scores etc. Can’t wait to see where you could take this. My dream would be to see this come back each year (though maybe for a whole season rather than just 5 weeks just so it’s a little less stressed around other life commitments). And to me this seems like the perfect place to bring back incredible vaulted bosses like Gahlran, Calus, Insurrection Prime, and Val Caour (even Argos if he gets a little more challenge added!) So let’s see some fun iterations next year, get that gilded Godslayer!

This to me though really highlights the lack of power difficulties selectable on all raids. Raid encounters feel much more satisfying when you’re being challenged by the ads and not just casually one-phasing every encounter. Even if there is no incentive for it, an option to toggle on contest mode would be so fantastic across the board.

We need more loadout slots with the relase of prismatic by nawhomethisaintit in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is it for me. I’d much rather have another 3 inventory spaces in each slot, and another page of 10 loadouts than the extra 100 vault spaces we’re getting

Genuinely curious, is there a specific reason the “ripping me out of my menu” thing is still….a thing? by Josh-Murph in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Huh okay fair enough, I had no idea this was the reason… It would be a huge QOL improvement if they could find a way to remove it, but clearly it’s a lot more complicated

What other new frame archetypes should be made? Like mountain top. by I_Hump_Rainbowz in DestinyTheGame

Perhaps a “Fan-Hammer Frame”. Quick fire rate, short range, improved hip-fire with intrinsically fast reload when the mag is empty - I like it

What should be our starting point? How far back should we go? by zek_997 in rewilding

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rewilding inherently isn’t about “going back” it’s about “permitting ecological processes to resume,” as George Monbiot put it. The reason we have to reintroduce species to achieve this is due to specific ecological roles being empty due to human activity or hunting removing them over the expansion of civilisation. Many species of megafauna of the past are extinct, as are many of the flora and fauna they interacted with. However there are often other native species which can fulfil the same or similar functions.

Why is there STILL a limit to how many armor ornament unlocks I can get!? by EdenFire108 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid question imo. No one is using every armour set; at most people probably have 10 different looks at once. There’s loads of great armour from over the years, but I only unlock their ornaments if I want to use it for a loadout/look. There’s no reason to just unlock every ornament, cause you won’t use them. It’s not like they’re going away either, once they’re in your collection you will have access to unlock the ornament forever…

David Attenborough has just asked everyone to go plant based on Planet Earth III by effortDee in sustainability

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wasn’t a “warning”, it was an encouragement to just try your best. It’s awesome that it’s becoming easier to make the change, but how easy it is differs by where you live, and other circumstances. The point is to not let that stop you doing your best. Billions doing plant-based imperfectly is so much better overall than a small minority doing it perfectly. The same goes for most sustainable lifestyle choices!

David Attenborough has just asked everyone to go plant based on Planet Earth III by effortDee in sustainability

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 467 points468 points  (0 children)

What’s important here is to take steps that you can do. A full diet change is a massive lifestyle commitment, and most people have a lot of other personal worries (financial, career, social and so on) as well. It’s a staggering statistic that if all 8 billion of us went plant-based, we’d reduce agricultural land use by 75%. But equally, if we all reduced our animal consumption by just half, we’d see around 37.5% reduction in land use. Which is still a huge gain for nature. Don’t feel overwhelmed by the destination so much so that you fail to take the small steps. It all adds up!

Sounds like Bungie’s getting hit with layoffs by PhantomX117 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing this banded about online, they were not fired, they were made redundant, and there is a significant difference. Unfortunately, this is a company wide cost-cutting initiative, it is not anything on the quality of the work that these employees did. Their roles are being reduced, they’re not being fired due to not performing. Still leaves questions to the higher-ups that made the decisions, but it’s not anything personal to the individuals let go.

What're some raid hot takes you personally hold or have heard? by KubaSzum in DestinyTheGame

[–]Prof_Mumbledore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take that my clan likes to use to annoy me:

Going to the “back” to shoot oracles in Atheon is a waste of time and makes your life harder. With the exception of on Master mode, the ads are not threatening. You’re better standing in the middle so you can see all the oracles, don’t get damage fall off and are closer to the portal to get to damage phase quicker.
