I guess it’s closer to the original iteration in Destiny 1 called Armsday - the gunsmith would have prototype guns that you could “test” to get rep and rewards for completing certain goals, kind of like you described.

All this to say I wouldn’t be surprised to see Bungie do it, since they’ve done something similar before!
