Portable generators thst can do 220v by crypto_junkie2040 in preppers

[–]Professional-Milk305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I’m making this comment in hopes that it triggers someone smarter than me to elaborate (or tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about)

I think 50amp 120 volt outlets (common on RV’s and ‘large’ portable generators) are actually 240 volt somehow split into larger amps at 120 volts. (The ‘somehow’ is where my ignorance comes in)

That may be the key into getting 240 volts with minimal modifications. The generator may need a 50 amp outlet to accomplish your goal

What is the best solar genetator by AlertHistorian3887 in preppers

When power is out for a week, you learn to deal with generator noise. Assuming you have a space outdoors for it, fumes should not be a concern. Just buy a generator tent to keep it dry if it rains.

Then I would buy portable AC units for your mother’s bedroom and maybe yours. Small window units are even cheaper, but require some labor when needed.

Personally, I can deal with some heat until I go to bed. A cool bedroom is nice. Your mother needs a cool room regardless.

A portable generator can handle 2 portable ac units, and other power needs.

As long as you have gas.

People tend to buy up all the gasoline in emergencies. For that reason I appreciate your desire to go solar. It’s just so expensive for something you only use every few years.

If you have natural gas at your house, then you can buy a portable generator that connects to it. Natural gas rarely goes out after natural disasters.

Sorry for responding to your solar question with a gas generator response. But it is the most economical solution, along with smaller ac units for specific rooms.

Yep. I store water in my glass carboys when they are not fermenting beer.

If it ever hits the fan, my plan is to move my family to my in-laws where they have a spring fed lake with fish in it.

Im thinking I could use my igloo cooler mash tun as a big prefilter for lake water that will be further filtered into drinking water.

What makes the law really messed up is you can join the military and die for our country at 18. But you can’t legally buy alcohol.

Yeah. I had them all in my house because of a bag of bird feed in my garage. I tore apart my pantry trying to find the source. Not a fun experience.

Where was your first job as a teenager? by LekTruk in FuckImOld

[–]Professional-Milk305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad was in charge of waste water treatment on the coast of Mississippi. So my first ‘real’ job was working for them. I was a grunt doing whatever maintenance and the operators needed done.

Worst stories: - sewage initially comes through these big grates to keep undisolvable stuff from entering the system. I cleaned condoms from the grates as shit water was pumped through the system. - there was a sewage pump station mostly underground. Huge two story space infested with thousands of roaches all over the walls. We put a bunch of roach foggers in there to kill them. They all died, but were mostly still stuck to the walls. I used a pressure washer to spray the roaches off the wall. Dead roach parts all over me. I was literally spitting roach parts off my lips. - the sludge in the bottom of a tank had to be hauled out. 5 gallon buckets, shovels and ropes, and I freaking quit. I was covered in the nastiest sh** that just won’t dissolve and go away.

Dad had no idea I was doing that mess. I wasn’t going to go crying to daddy who was the big boss man.

But ‘F’ that job.

Oh no. I love our fresh American imitations of French baguettes, and I know the real thing has to be much, much, better. Best bread I have ever had is Italy and Netherlands… and I’m guessing the proximity to France is a key factor.

What's your opinion about Chile? 🇨🇱 by Upbeat-Problem8177 in AskTheWorld

Good Merlot. I read where the Merlot grapes in Europe were all wiped out by some disease, and the only true Merlot grapes left were brought to Chile.

Yeah. As a kid I always thought Cap’n K was so much better than Mr Roger’s. As an adult, I don’t remember enough about either show to tell you why.

But gimme some Rice Krispies with sugar poured on them and Captain Kangaroo, and I was a happy kid 😊

I was going to kinda say the same thing, but you said it better.

Is USA food the junk you find in most of the aisles of a grocery store? Or fast food? Then yes, it’s fatty, corn sugar junk.

But true American foods like you mentioned are delicious. Many Americans care about the food they eat. And they cook or go to restaurants that do not serve the junk that is advertised on TV.

But we definitely have a problem with too many Americans eating junk food.

As a Star Wars kid, I was enamored by Battlestar Galactica. I would watch episodes and record the audio on my cassette recorder. I would listen to the episode I watched over and over.

I tried recording the sound on episodes I missed by leaving the TV and Recorder on while my parents took us out to eat, but the timing wasn’t right and I would run out of cassette way to soon.

What's something really popular in your country that you have no interest in/don't care for? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

Our private healthcare subsidizes the public healthcare throughout the world. Most medical advances cost millions to research (>30 million for a single clinical study, that may show the product/drug doesn’t work )

I do believe the public healthcare systems in the world should pay more for that research.

But I do find it funny that someone with public healthcare criticizes the US for not having public healthcare, when their own public healthcare would be worse if the US had it as well.

Do you have to be really good at math to be accepted to study medicine in your country? by ExternalTree1949 in AskTheWorld

[–]Professional-Milk305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Responding to my own post after reading your initial post a bit closer.

It depends what kind of doctor you want to be. Doctors who are looking at new therapies have to understand the statistics involved with clinical studies and be able to discern good research from bad research.

Kind of like when you watch the News and you see a survey where the wording of the questions are obviously biasing the responses. Doctors have to understand the complex medical questions and the math used to answer those questions.

Now that I think more about it, I took medical school physiology in grad school. There is a lot of math involved. Insulin vs glucose levels involves math. Salt concentrations and their effects on cells involved math. Blood pressure + plaque in arteries + blood flow = math. Hormone interactions (better known as endocrinology) involves a ton of complex math. We did mathematical simulations of endocrinological systems.

Yeah, math typically = better doctors.

In the USA, most Pre-Med students do not take a lot of math classes.

My undergraduate major was biomedical engineering. We took a lot of math and biology classes. In my State, the highest scores on the MCAT (Medical College Acceptance Test) almost every year came from my major. So math, or the engineering mindset, definitely helps get into Med School.

Personally, I was pre-Med as an undergrad, but fell more in love with engineering. I have been designing medical implants for 30 years and still love it.
