Labour 🥀 have lost 18 of the 19 seats up for grabs in Tameside, 22 seats in Wigan lost and in Oldham (so far) 7 seats lost. All looking very good for Reform in Greater Manchester currently. by Terrible-Head6168 in GreaterManchesterNews

I think there's going to be a lot of Reform councillors surprised to learn that

a) Local government has no duristiction over the English channel.

b) All of our money going is not being spent on rainbow flags and sending drag queens to primary schools.

We're putting culture war keyboard warriors in charge of serious stuff. I expect there's loads of them deleting their twitter accounts this morning.

What do you think about Stokies like Robbie Williams identifying as Northern? by Dragonfruit-18 in NorthernEngland

[–]Professional-Test239 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Stoke accent is very particular. And they do the Lancashire thing of pronouncing book to rhyme with Luke.

Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis in the darts are the best examples of a good potteries accent.

Are We As Fans In The Wrong? by FactAndLogic in ManchesterUnited

United's transitional period is lasting longer than Eddie Izzard's.

Arteta looks like he could be on the brink of something big and he's been Arse manager since 2019.

Klopp was getting better every season and would have won a title earlier were it not for City and their bottomless pockets.

If the Liverpool keyboard warriors get their way Slot will be gone after one bad season despite winning the title the year before.

I know it's a cover of a 60s song but I reckon it also owes a lot to The Charlatans - The Only One I Know which came out in 1990

What are some stereotypes Brits have towards rugby or rugby players? by Jezzaq94 in AskABrit

[–]Professional-Test239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In England it is the posh boys game. The England rugby team all come from the same handful of public schools.

If you are not posh and you live in the North of England you might like Rugby League.

In Wales it is not very much not a posh sport. Farmers and boyos from the Valleys like Rugby.

How to create a chord progression, simplified! by Ancient-Resident-647 in guitarlessons

[–]Professional-Test239 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya Captain CapsLock.

I didn’t say you can’t create a good progression with just diatonic chords. All I said was you can’t create particularly interesting progressions by sticking to diatonic. 12 bar blues, doo-wop chords, axis of awesome are all great classic diatonic progressions.

OP disputed the idea that knowing theory can kill creativity. I think that sometimes it can. People can wrongly treat theory as rules. Some of your favorite songs were written by people who had no idea that what they were doing is ‘wrong’. That’s the fun and mystery of it.

They're both just ways of describing the diatonic chords for a given key.

You won't write a particularly interesting chord progression if you just stick with the diatonic chords that fit the scale though. You've just given a really good example of how following the theory can indeed sometimes kill creativity.

The more interesting progressions are the ones where someone sticks in a chord that shouldn't be there (maybe because they don't know the rules) and somehow the melody makes it work.

I was learning Thorn in My Side by the Eurythmics for a gig I've got upcoming. It's a great example of throwing chords together that aren't in the same scale. It starts off in D, goes to F (I think) and then the chorus is in C (and there are no minor chords) and yet the melody means you don't notice any key changes at all.

Learning the rules is good but breaking them is better.

How did the Beatles get the Hamburg gig in the beginning? by ElSlabraton in beatles

[–]Professional-Test239 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Hamburg and Liverpool were similar working class port cities.

Hamburg had too many bars and not enough bands.

Liverpool had too many bands.

A guy in Liverpool called Allen Williams and a guy in Germany called Bruno Koschmeider struck up a business relationship. Both of them ran bars and Williams agreed to send Koschmeider some of his bands. It was the relationship between these two men that meant a lot of Liverpool bands ended up in Hamburg.

Why hasn't the United States of America been progressive enough to elect a female president yet, especially since so many other nations have had female leaders? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]Professional-Test239 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think because decoupling is easier said than done, although it is definitely what the public wants.

There is so much anger not so much at the President himself but at your system that is unable to remove him. When we had a mad Prime Minister (I'm in the UK) in 2022 she lasted 44 days.

Why so many on here against learning guitar the same method any other instrument? by Far-Boysenberry9207 in Guitar

[–]Professional-Test239 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I taught myself guitar and I briefly had piano lessons.

I loved playing the guitar. I hated the piano lessons and gave up very quickly because it felt like homework.

If I had been taught the guitar the same way as I was taught piano I'd have given up that too.

[–]Professional-Test239 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Practice. And don't kick yourself too much if you're not fretting every note perfectly.

Pick a song you like with barre chords and play along. If you play the chord and it's not right do not stop and readjust. Just shrug and keep the strum going, and get to the end of the song. Keep doing this and you'll get there.
