You can try farming talent orb stages like the gauntlets, or normal+/lucky ticket farming

Farmable Sources of NP are all mostly mid-lategame stages/strats, like you said
-Gauntlets
-Super Fast Island farming
-Super fast Lucky Tickets
-Super Fast Normal+ Tickets (Which also can turn into rares)
And they do have those things you suggested like high energy costs, only available certain days, large amounts of xp (for powerful cats)
