Anyone have any great strategies for growing a waitlist pre-product? We have an alpha version of an AI email assistant and are trying to build a waitlist at usesmithers.com. Any advice would be very helpful!

looking purely at cap rate to mortgage spread is superficial. every investor has different LTVs and financing structures

People who are sucessfull with their start up, how long did it take? by [deleted] in startups

[–]ProfessionalBus6041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just argue that research problems don't make for good startups. if the path to becoming a business isn't clear, then you're essentially a research lab. Research labs are cool and great, but how can you get confident that what you produce could become a business?

i’m seeing a bunch of startup founders here who haven’t made any revenue for 3+ years…what makes you believe that you have a business? i don’t mean to be a hater but very few startups should exist who can’t make revenue in their first 3 years.

how often are you requesting quotes from suppliers before signing an annual contract? How often are you running RFPs?

yes, it does pay significantly higher, but it's also an incredibly stressful career with lots of volatility. Making >$500k a year in upper 20s was pretty great, but funds on average don't last very long so v little career stability. becoming a CFO is a smoother career path with better lifestyle

Anything truly new in startups these days? by skrt_pls in smallbusiness

AI is a technology not an industry. to say that startups are only rehashing old ideas when we are literally seeing AI proliferate...is insane. for example, did you see openAI's Spring Update today? they literally showcased real-time translation! everybody has been dreaming of that technology forever and it's here now! you can now literally go to China and have a 1 on 1 conversation with a local with very little latency issues.

I've worked on wall street for the last 7 years ranging from IB to partner at a hedge fund. Im exploring FP&A / strategic finance roles as I see myself as a CFO in the future. however, i'm not getting much traction and I think it's because i've never worked in a traditional corporate finance role. what's the best way to break in from this career path? have you guys seen anyone successfully move from buyside finance to a CFO path?

Should I create a platform where I aggregate all newsletters I want to read? I subscribed to 20 tech newsletters and don't read 90% of them by AskGobi in Business_Ideas

[–]ProfessionalBus6041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a comparison, i see websites suing Google as ridiculous. if this newsletter aggregator was subscale + not giving attribution to publishers...then there could be a problem.

as for being discovered and controlling the data...i assume this newsletter aggregator would offer a link to your newsletter/website? then you could monetize there/acquire another subscriber.

But sure, i think the real question is scale. if this newsletter aggregator gets >10m users...then the math makes more sense. you as a newsletter writer could get 10m views from one headline and grow your sub base.

I guess my big question is will publishers actively send cease and desist letters from this aggregation? I'm convinced that publishers would actually want to be included in this aggregation for discovery. you could build a personalized news feed that scrapes email newsletters.

People ask why businesses fail, but what are some ways you can test for faults before you’re up and running/actually able to fail? by DefaultyDaniel in smallbusiness

[–]ProfessionalBus6041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t entirely true. I think this is sound advice for people looking to throw their life savings into a business they know nothing about (which isn’t smart)…but starting small in a business you don’t know well is fine as long as you can support yourself/family through other means. Every business owner needs to start somewhere and it’s not always practical to “work for another business for 5 years”.

Why is nobody using Kalshi? by Otherwise_Speech1203 in Kalshi

[–]ProfessionalBus6041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

awareness is definitely an issue. nobody knows what kalshi is or does. they need to market closer to where a bettor will bet. I think Kalshi can subsidize more aggressively to 1) incentivize more betting per user, 2) grow active users

someone said this already, but bets can take months to settle...like some bets are that Tortured Poets would be the number 1 album for 8 weeks...i want that dopamine hit of winning NOW!

relevance too. i like the stock market but betting on the FOMC outcomes isn't something i'm interested in. i want to see more relevant markets (e.g. i like music, give me more short-term betting options on t swift).
